Both will have their place in the Computer World!
That said, truth is that Windows 8 is released to the RTM but Public (yet). Let see how the first 3 month will go, because that 3 moth will be the absolute minimum to get an kind picture how Windows 8 will do in reality. There a lot speculation around in the News, on the Internet and special in Forums. And special in forum like MDL, there some user's who have nothing else in mind than to find a much as possible negatives about Windows 8.
The reality is or will, to be precise, that the first batch of Windows 8 Tablets will be quite expensive compare to Android Tablet. As the OP wrote, 500 Bucks may will be the charge for an Arm based Windows 8 Tablet but X86 Tablet. The x86 will; be more expensive because of the much different hardware it needs.
I think that x86 Windows 8 Tablets will get their place mainly in productive areas, let say: corporate and business areas. That's for sure because of the software which could run on x86 machines but Arms machines! Als MS was already declarre, the Arm based Tablet could run Apps only which are available in Windows Store. If you take a look at those store, you find out directly that that there is very little available for business use!
Question is: will the third party manufacturers like Lenovo, Samsung, HP and other go to both channel: ARM and x86 or ARM only? Also that triggers the next question: Will be there also low cost 7" Tablets running Windows 8?
The 9.7" and 10"++ Tablets running Windows 8 could be the first real challenge for Apple's iPad! Which wouldn't bad at all!! And the x86 would have the advantage of to be able to run business apps. Also there would be the advantage of the different expansion slots which those Tablets will have but Apple's iPad! Fact is that till today the main use of the iPad is just for entertaining and just a few percent are used for real work! The Window 8 Tablet could, and I think it would, be adopted as real working tool special for the todays "mobile" business!
If Windows 8 will also be available as 7" or even less than, it could be some time a challenge for Android Tablets as well.
Unfortunately the Android OS isn't build as an commercial product and therefore lacks of many features. That din't means that Android is bad, it isn't! Unlike Apple's iPad, Android is build in small "groups" for a huge varity of Hardware while the iPads are build just for some special hardware. In regard to that, Android OS's lacks in performances, speed, add on's drivers and, and, and! If that could change and android would be build on commercial way, android would be a much better system!
But finally, I would still say that Android will keep his place!
