With Windows 8 released, future of Android/iOS?

Hey guys, now that Windows 8 is released, what is the future of Android/iOS?

I know that the Surface RT is debuting at $500, which means android tablets are still safe.

I have 2 questions:

If Windows 8 Pro tablets are actually cheap and good, and there are enough apps to match Google play/App store and they beat out Android + iOS, what will Android/iOS have to do to get back in the race?

In a more realistic world, do you think Windows 8 Pro tablets will have a chance at taking down Android + iOS tablets anytime soon if the prices come down?

Both will have their place in the Computer World!

That said, truth is that Windows 8 is released to the RTM but Public (yet). Let see how the first 3 month will go, because that 3 moth will be the absolute minimum to get an kind picture how Windows 8 will do in reality. There a lot speculation around in the News, on the Internet and special in Forums. And special in forum like MDL, there some user's who have nothing else in mind than to find a much as possible negatives about Windows 8.

The reality is or will, to be precise, that the first batch of Windows 8 Tablets will be quite expensive compare to Android Tablet. As the OP wrote, 500 Bucks may will be the charge for an Arm based Windows 8 Tablet but X86 Tablet. The x86 will; be more expensive because of the much different hardware it needs.

I think that x86 Windows 8 Tablets will get their place mainly in productive areas, let say: corporate and business areas. That's for sure because of the software which could run on x86 machines but Arms machines! Als MS was already declarre, the Arm based Tablet could run Apps only which are available in Windows Store. If you take a look at those store, you find out directly that that there is very little available for business use!

Question is: will the third party manufacturers like Lenovo, Samsung, HP and other go to both channel: ARM and x86 or ARM only? Also that triggers the next question: Will be there also low cost 7" Tablets running Windows 8?

The 9.7" and 10"++ Tablets running Windows 8 could be the first real challenge for Apple's iPad! Which wouldn't bad at all!! And the x86 would have the advantage of to be able to run business apps. Also there would be the advantage of the different expansion slots which those Tablets will have but Apple's iPad! Fact is that till today the main use of the iPad is just for entertaining and just a few percent are used for real work! The Window 8 Tablet could, and I think it would, be adopted as real working tool special for the todays "mobile" business!

If Windows 8 will also be available as 7" or even less than, it could be some time a challenge for Android Tablets as well.

Unfortunately the Android OS isn't build as an commercial product and therefore lacks of many features. That din't means that Android is bad, it isn't! Unlike Apple's iPad, Android is build in small "groups" for a huge varity of Hardware while the iPads are build just for some special hardware. In regard to that, Android OS's lacks in performances, speed, add on's drivers and, and, and! If that could change and android would be build on commercial way, android would be a much better system!

But finally, I would still say that Android will keep his place!

As hard as Microsoft tries... they have rarely pushed anyone out of any market completely. You simply won't change Apple People and their iLifeStyle. They love their Apple products (for great reasons!) and there's just nothing Microsoft or Android offers to make them stop buying Apple. Right there Microsoft will never push out Apple which includes tablets and the iOS.

I think if Android can maintain the image of providing a solid, easy to use, and robust OS they will retain loyal customers. It's already proven to be a great success so as long as they don't screw that up with some bad releases then they will hold significant market share.

I have no doubt Microsoft is doing all they can to appropriate as much market share as possible but they won't crush Apple or Android. Competition will just get more fierce which I think we, the customers, will enjoy!
will it slow down like all windows do after a period of time ?

Not for me as I use the RTM since August 2.!! Also used the Dev Preview before some month without problem a like!

Microsoft didn't has the attention as Apple has to push out other from Market. See just all that Patent Games from Apple which is nothing else then "cut" market share of other's! Bad behavior I don't like! And why most of the Apple Mac and iPad user's mainly working on PC? Because of their, how you named it: iLifeStyle? And don't you forget that it were Microsoft who had the "first" Tablet Computer 12 year back. If Bill Gates didn't had left the company that early, my the computer world would look a bit different today!
That many of those people "love their Apple products" is not to admit that they was getting cheated by that company. ALL Apple product's are Product's Made In China Mainland, using only older and well tested hardware which they therefore get for an damn cheap cost and sell it for an very high price. Also the cost of development teherefore for tha Hardware is very cheap because they didn't need to do the fully testing as required for new Technology! And last but not least, the cost of the software development is quite cheap for Apple because they need to develop for a very low range of hardware instead of the whole and new range of available as Microsoft, just as example!

Android will keep it's place, no doubt with that. Let wait and see a few month how Microsoft will do! Would be very interesting!!

I think if the ios keeps getting viruses "unofficial free software" as my dad likes to call the ios viruses then apple will have issues keeping market shares. I also heard that the iphone 4 and other iphones are far easier to hack then the wp7&7.5 mango releases and are not capable of getting a virus due to the market place restrictions in place, for instance avg released "antivirus" software in the market place and m$ took the app off of the market for virus like behavior and banned avg from ever putting another app on the market. You will never see apple ban a product from their market due to the belief that they are invincible. Thats just my 2 cents.
This may be a dumb question, but I'm still confused as to what difference Windows 8 has on tablets vs pcs. I know the RT version won't run normal windows programs, but are there tablets that will run any old windows program? If so, that would be extremely appealing, not just because of the range of apps available, but also because you won't have to repurchase anything you already have for your computer.

Windows RT on Surface (MS Tablet) will run with Windows Store Software for RT only while Windows 8 x86 will run on Surface (MS Tablet) with Desktop software as well. The later one will be called Surface Pro and run with Intel Technology It will be released to the Market end of January 2013, so within a month or so! Price will start by US$ 899.-- which is ok for it because it will have min. 64 GB SSD and 2 GB Ram and for sure much more other option compare to the lower graded RT Model.

I do believe that the Pro will be well adopted from Corporates because of it's capability to be able to work with standard PC Applications and Data!
unless windows 8 is open source, I don't think it will be able to compete in low end market.

Seems to be you like dreaming!

how will those small tablet companies gonna come up with the money to buy the license fee windows 8 and still fork out relatively low priced tablets? not to mention windows 8 not being open source will make it harder for small scale developers to risk the investment.

if you are only going to pay less than 300 for tablet, chances are it's going to use android instead of windows 8
As those manufacturers mainly located in China they could!! It's also depend on the amount of OEM Licenses need to get a damn cheap OS, it could really be possible to "see" a lot of those Windows 8 Tabs come out in the next time. There already quite a few out there!!
Microsoft recently reduced the price to OEM's of Windows 8 (full, not RT) to $30 if it's in tablets. This could help Windows tablets get some more traction. Still, they'd never be able to compete with low priced Android tablets, because they inherently need more resources (RAM, storage space). Still, I think it's worth paying a premium for full Windows on a tablet. I'll be waiting to see what kind of tablets appear once the new AMD tablet chips are on the market.
There already Tablets running Windows 8 x86 for about US$ 300.00 out there! The weakpoint of those tablets are the size of the SSD Drive! 32 GB isn't enough and even 64GB is very little!

It's the min. requirement of x86 and x64 Apps which makes those tablets expensive! Also the Battery time for x86/x64 Tablets is an weakpoint because those hardware need quite a bit of power for to run.

Have you ever ask yourself why Apple didn't produce Tablets for OS-X instead or beside of iOS? The answer would be the same: min. requirements! For Apple that counts even more because of the min. win-margin they want to get all times! So, if Apple would start to build such Tablets, what the retail price would be?

Give yourself the answer!
Well it all goes down to what manufacturers/sellers pre-install before selling. If a regular user receive Android tablet, he will not change it to Win 8 (and vice versa). When they asked Linus Torvalds why Android gaining so much popularity compared to Linux for PC he said that many sellers get paid to sell PC bundled with Windows, and not many of them decide to put Linux pre-installed, as Android is pre-installed as the manufacturers see it efficient. As long as this goes on Android will never lose popularity.

That's something very hard to believe! I really doubt that MS is paying the PC Manufacturers for to sell PC's with Windows. That the Manufacturers get a the best price for Windows Licenses will be just true! But here it comes to the amount of sold/bought Windows Licenses the Manufacturers are dealing with!

At this moment, I haven't seen/heard about an really clone working with Windows RT, which will run on specific ARM CPU's! And Windows 8 x86 will need x86/x64 Hardware which is much more expensive than any ARM Hardware! If it would be possible to use Windows 8 RT or x86/x64 on an tablet which came with Android, I do believe that there quite some amount of user will change to Windows!
I certainly hope android doesn't go with win 8
But Android works fine on Windows 8!!

In answer to the original poster, functionality versus price and the availability and variety of reasonably priced (or free) software will decide if a platform will remain, I see the MS products, their high price, the high price of some "smart" cover and the evolution of the Microsoft equivalent of Apples walled garden approach.

I don't like it at all.

However, I'm in an aging demographic with my relevance diminishing in the marketplace.

It seems that all the advertising is targeted at a much younger cohort, a generation of media consumers, where ownership is secondary to immediacy.

Right, enough of this, I am going down to my cave to pull some ancient vinyl out of my vault and couple some crackly classics with a smooth single malt.

Hey, that rhymes!

I'm a poet and I did not know it!
