davidr - I did the reinstall of 7/24 two days ago... I wanted to goof around with nchtrman's all in one firmware. I first loaded the standard 7-24 PD firmware. I played around a little to see if I could get it to sleep. I easily got it to sleep for 20 minutes but did not try longer. I basically followed the steps I outlined except for deleting the GE file since GE was not installed. I'm not sure all those steps are required..but I did them anyway... One thing that I noticed was with GE installed the slide switch behaved differently than timeout sleep. Without GE I believe they behave the same... Also as gottahavit points out...Most mail clients keep a monitor task alive... As part of step 5...kill almost all tasks ....that mail client gets killed.. I use smartbar task manager..BTW.... the nchtrman stuff is great.... But I went back to my own handmade build with my favorite apps.. and GE

cosmos.. I agree nchntrman's FW is good. I just installed it and added a few favorite apps.. Like you, I flashed back to stock 7-24 first and did a short sleep test.. 10 min or so.. it stayed asleep. With the modified fw, I have now had it sleeping for 1 1/2 hr ok. No auto wake-ups.I won't add my email setup until tomorrow after I have a good baseline on sleep. I think I can live without GE since I will leave set-up somewhat static and can use web based repositories, I think... Market is fun, however and awfully handy.. I hope someday the experts get the sleep thing figured out..Thanks for all the info you have posted.. good stuff...

Update of Post above.. PDN woke up on its own after several hours (prob 2-4.. I was asleep).. I had let it go to sleep naturally.. On wi fi.. it would reconnect after short sleeps earlier in evening.. eventually it would not reconnect no matter how many times I connected/disconnected and scanned..I am now testing with having put it to sleep with switch and will report..I had hoped the absence of GE would allow better sleep performance and more reliable wi fi.. so far I think it is better, but not 100% fixed. This is all with nchntrman's modded 7-24fw.. I am liking this particular fw mod really well. thanks nchntrman!!

By checking the Spare Parts - Battery history page you can figure out how long it slept and when it woke up..You have to press running to get the actual minutes it is running... Check before you put it to sleep and then again when it wakes up. Or if it is already awake..If 4 clock hours went by but the running time is 2 hours greater than when you put it to sleep.... it slept 2 hours before waking..Another clue is when the screen is very dim... it is considered off... And on the same page press the screen on to get the time the screen was active. If it has been sleeping properly or in use this time is quite close to the running time...

/data/data/com.google.android.googleapps/databases/gls.db If you have marketplace working the first time you do this you should not delete it. Because this file is where your androidid is saved. Rename it instead... I actually keep a copy for when I have to reinstall a new firmware version...With this file removed you can still browse the marketplace but downloads won't work....read on...Be aware that after you reboot your PDN gls.db will be back again.. but will no longer have your correct androidid in it...So now you can just delete it since you have wisely saved a working copy as above. If you need to download from marketplace you will need to put the saved copy back. Login in to Google Talk. And marketplace should be working again.

Cosmos,Thanks for the tip...i tried to access the PDN internal memory to find this, there was a data folder but it was empty. I have market working at the moment...using the non ugly market hack.I can get about 30-40% sleep (only if i press the power button) and in partial sleep mode battery lasts about 10hours. Think i will live with this and switch off the PDN when i do not need it. Managing the gls.db is too much housekeeping for me.Thanks again.Lawrence

I read a number of you have had success with sleep after disabling 'Background data'. This has been my experience as well. Unfortunately, I like the Android Market, my primary email is Gmail and within our family we make extensive use of Google calendars. I need the Google Experience. Has anyone found a simple widget to enable/disable Background data? More ideally, someone could write a simple app or script which automatically toggles Background data when either wifi or the screen are turned off/on. Any takers?
Update: I am testing WiSync (http://gearsoft.mobi/) which looks like it might fit the bill. If that doesn't work, there is another app called SyncWifi which might. I will report back in a few days. Anyone tried these apps to address their sleep issues with GE installed?

I have background data disabled always, and still my PDN doesn't sleep all the time. (GE or non-GE). That's why I wrote and use SoftLocker to help me workaround this issue. It has seemed to help me out quite a bit, at least since I gave up worrying about closing apps and stuff just so my screen wouldn't wake up...and of course it still did from time to time.

mrschmitz - Isn't that almost the exact opposite of what most of us are trying to accomplish? Your app actually prevents the device from entering deep sleep? From reading your posts, you indicate that using this tool your device charge level drops ~ 30-40% in 7 hours of non-use - that would kill the battery within 24 hours. Others who have gotten deep sleep to work have reported almost no drop at all over the same time period. I just want to be able to reliably pick up the device - even after a few days, without the battery having unexpectedly discharged. I guess it all comes down to whether you want the device to function more like a phone or more like an e-book reader, and what your expectations are as a result.

But it has its benefits. My goal was to get it to function more like the phone (where the lock screen actually works), since nearly everyone's attempt to get a deep sleep to work has failed so far. I like to be able to turn off the screen and then back on later without worrying about losing WiFi. After I made/use the app, I never have to reboot to "fix" my WiFi after I unlock the screen. I also never come back to my PDN to find the screen on. I also charge my PDN every day. It's just another option. It seems Android just isn't suited for a deep sleep mode, yet. Perhaps it does better in 2.2, depending on how the Samsung Galaxy tablet behaves.

I went back to jackbox's open platform based ROM. Everything was fine for several days - now it sometimes comes out of sleep. As far as I can tell, the culprit is Amazon Kindle, since it is the only new app that I installed. My guess is that it is the whispersync feature trying to phone home. In the menus, I don't see any option to disable this feature. Has anyone discovered how to hack this to disable? If not, I'll have to uninstall Kindle. Kinda sucks since I purchased a book yesterday.

I've been having similar problems on the Open Platform as well (waking up after put into sleep). I'll give it a whirl (uninstalling kindle) and see what it does for us.

I do not have the kindle app on my WPDN and it still wakes up at all different times. I've made all the modifications suggested. I've tried the SoftLocker app and that has helped but the battery still is almost drained by morning. Let it go to sleep naturally and it still comes back on. I don't know what the culprit is and I've read almost every thread possible (didn't want to get an "infraction" yikes). So my question is simple. Is there any disadvantage to just shutting down the WPDN when done and then reboot? It saves me much more battery time. I think there's wear and tear on that little plastic on/off button which is cheesy...so that could break eventually. Please don't INFRACT me!

Update: removing Kindle did nothing for me. I have no idea what's going on. I've tried AutoTask Killer... which seamed promising for about 15 minutes, but it only prevents apps, not processes from popping up. I actually just switched from the Open Platform V 3.0 back to 1.0 w/o the market and it is STILL waking up randomly on me. The search continues.

I'm running the cruz mod with GE. It took me about a week to get mine back to sleeping peacefully after I did the update to version 2. I turned my PDN on at noon today, read for about a half hour, and then put it to sleep. It's only lost 1 bar all day, and that's 8-9 hours. The trick for me was not to figure out how to kill everything, but to figure out what I needed to leave on (in the ignore list). Those things that keep waking up are going to keep waking up, so stop trying to shut them off. I have about 10 things in my ignore list. These are things that either need to left on, like the android system, things I want left on, like Aldiko, and things that the system apparently wants to have on because it keeps calling them. Losing 1 bar over 8-9 hours is just fine with me, so I'm not going to argue with my setup. It sleeps during the day, and I turn it off at night. It may seem counter-intuitive, but maybe you should be looking at putting more things in the ignore list.
