I got the recovery image extracted if anyone's interested. Should be possible to get cwm in it's place.

from the firmware zip you can pull out the recovery image and rename it to recovery.ramfs.gz and extract the ramfs from the .gz then you can mount the ramfs in linux with this command: mount -o loop romfs.img /mnt

Please, pardon my 'noob' question, but what exactly will this get us?

First off thank you for posting this, I believe this will come in handy for my situation. I managed to somewhat corrupt/destroy my recovery partition. The device will boot into the recovery console and I have tried re-flashing both the BN and AZ firmware. Both flash fine but the device still refuses to load android. It merely stops on the PD logo screen (even if left alone for hours). When plugging the device into my *nix machine it looks like I still have serial access (see dmesg output below) and I know the SD card is still accessible. In your opinion what would be the best way to go about transferring your image to my device? I am a bit of a noob when it comes to stuff like this. Thanks.
