Without trying to mix this thread into something even more spooky..but somebody somewhere is noticing it, too- so may as well say it....looks like there is some FW now posted for an R61B200...doesn't look like newer version of the device that's this thread is about. Or even JAPF (yes I did that- short for "Just Another Picture Frame")? Naw... You know, looking at the FW name and a little google searching (because I'm light on my fingers)...looks like this is for the 6"....though the PD website still says no updates for it.

S11_04_28_PD_AUO6QNT_ENG_S3C2416.tar.gz searched: http://www.google.com/search?q=Sipix+AUO+6++pandigital

S11_04_28_PD_AUO6QNT_ENG_S3C2416.tar.gz searched: http://www.google.com/search?q=S3C2416+pandigital

anyhow--here's where: in the mirror...
http://mirror.support.pandigital.net:8080/Support/FW/Novel/

and the directory...
http://support.pandigital.net:8080/Support/FW/Novel/R61B200/

and that's all I have to say about that one.

It was added to their firmware downloads today. It's a .tar not a .zip

NO! This would not be a smart thing to do! Do Not flash this on your WPDN's people. This looks like the same 6 inch ePaper Novel FW sainthooligan reported earlier today.

I am splitting his post and combining it with this one.

PD product pages here:

US version: Model PRD06E20WWH8 http://www.pandigital.net/?PageID=357
Canadian version: Model R6E2WHK8EU http://pandigital.net/search.asp?Mode=Product&TypeID=43&ProductID=438

For all 6" PDN owners!!

Downloaded the latest software from PD site for the 6" and installed it. (Dated 5/23: http://pandigital.ne...l/PRD06E20WWH8/)

It is an update that works extremely well and speeds up the 6"; it seems to me. After downloading extract the software from the TAR file using 7-zip and you need to do 2 extractions until you have a file folder named qdutil. (If you have a file with an extension it is not yet a folder which is what is needed.) You copy the software folder onto a micro SD Card and put it into the external SD slot. Then power on and go to the settings and find the firmware update link under the advanced settings link. Click the update link and off it goes updating the FW. This info is not anywhere in the manuals and PDN denies even having an update for the 6"??!! I got info from some other hardware geeks and figured out how it worked on the PD Novel.

Yea!! An update for another PDN. They are working to make these purchases better.
Alright, now that the mystery seems solved, I can reference it for the Index sticky post.

Let's get to cracking this puppy and see if it's mod worthy.
Does anyone know how to make this ereader update other than the above. I have a partially bricked reader that needs this update. The reader is not responsive to screen input so I cannot gain access to the update screen. I have tried power and volume up keys, power and reset, power, volume up and reset, without any luck. The reader does power on with half a screen landscaped and icon names reversed. I do have this update on a SD card which does show up in the right corner of the screen. I thought I could swap out the internal card but there doesn't seem to be one unless it is under the metal shield, which is probably only for the cpu. Any help would be appreciated.

Reference should be to Fred's post of 05/23/2011 software. Found the internal memory - Hynix H26M21001 DAR memory chip attached to the board.

I also installed the S11_05_31_PD_AUO6QNT_ENG_S3C2416 firmware (for R61B200) on my Pandigital 6" epaper Novel and now the touch screen doesn't work and the screen images are rotated 90 degrees and reversed. I have the S11_03_01B_PD_AUO6Q_ENG_S3C2416 firmware that I got at Support/FW/Novel/PRD06E20WWH8 saved onto my microSD card, but I can't get to the firmware menu to flash it since touch screen doesn't work. It seems that the R61B200 reader doesn't have touch screen and uses hardware buttons for navigation.

Were you able to reflash the correct firmware back?

I was thinking that if I could get a connection with the reader (sort of like ADB in android, even though this reader is Linux) that I could manually copy the correct firmware to the proper folders. Anybody know of a program that can do this?
I googled around and found the solution to my problem.

I installed the R61B200 firmware thinking that it would work with the 6" epaper Novel. It installed correctly and booted up, but it screwed up the screen and touchscreen. It disabled the touchscreen so that I couldn't get to the update firmware menu.

I solution is to turn off the ereader. Then press the 1st and 3rd buttons (return and search) simulateously while turning it on.

It will then install whatever firmware that is loaded on the microSD card.

I used the S11_03_01B_PD_AUO6Q_ENG_S3C2416 firmware that I got at Support/FW/Novel/PRD06E20WWH8. You have to extract it twice, according to Fred above, and copy it to the root directory on the microSD.

Now it is back to normal.

Have a look at the link in the very first post of the sticky thread.

None of those links seem to work anymore. I think there are going to be a few people interested from the recent sale at Tigerdirect... Can anyone put it up again?

EDIT: By the way I will be more than happy to host a link for people who search for it in the future.

I'm also interested in any firmware available around. With only 30$ paid for this toy at TigerDirect I am quite ready for experimenting. But I'm afraid this topic has been abandoned long time ago.
The original firmware can probably be found by following this link for now. Please note that I have not downloaded nor tested that file. I also don't know how long it will stay up there.

There are two firmwares that I find interesting besides the original one. One will turn your book into a Russian ONEXT Touch&Read 001 (click the topmost "Скачать" to get it; the second one is just user manual). Once installed, turn on the book and click the icon in the bottom left corner with the gears and the word "Настройки" to get to the settings menu. From here, click the third option from the top, "Язык". Then, obviously, English.
Pros:
  • Many supported file formats (claimed to support fb2, ePub, DjVu, TXT, PDF, RTF, and PalmDOC)
  • Chess for 1 or 2 players
  • Calculator
  • RSS reader
  • Automatic rotation of the browser (and images, I think)
  • Also has "supertouch": you can use 2 fingers to pinch-zoom! Supposedly.
Cons:
  • No dictionary at all. They claim it to be a WIP, but there hasn't been any visible hints of work being done on this FW anymore.
  • No mail reader, or couldn't find it.
  • No thumbnail covers (the primary reason I like Pandigital's FW).

The other one I find interesting is one for BenQ K60 V2.01. Touch the ">" in the lower right corner, then the larger wrench icon, then the second option from the top, the one with only 2 letters in it, and English.
Pros:
  • It has TTS (text-to-speech, in other words, it can read your books aloud to you!).
  • Handwriting recognition (not sure if it's useful).
Cons:
  • It messes up the keyboard. The keys now go like this, from left to right: page forward, volume up, page back, menu (at least this one matches up), volume button does nothing, back (the normal page back acts like the normal return button, so pretty easy to get accustomed to this), and keyword search. The only way I found to decrease the volume is to start TTS, press the menu button and decrease it from the speech interface.
  • It will not read and may lock up requiring a reset if you set the date (are they using a trial version of the TTS?) and so time and date are not displayed on top
  • Only Chinese and English voices and only one voice for each (both female).
  • A hiccup every time a page is turned. Make the font as small as possible to minimize this.
  • Very minimal features.

BTW, the only FW with a browser that doesn't try to download anything during Acid3 test is the one in Pandigital's firmware. It gives me a score of 99, not that it matters much.

HTH

Edit: Original firmware URL updated to match the new one posted by geert. It will probably disappear soon enough, too...
