This thread is for the discussion of Gaining Root Access for the MID V7.
Link: Merimobiles.com - MID V7
- Other Names: EKEN M009S, ViaPad 7, MID 7
[hr]
NOT VERIFIED OR TESTED.... yet....

ROOT & UN-ROOT ACCESS!:
Extremely Easy to do using z4root. Link: XDA-Developers.com - z4root thread
1) Go to Settings
- Go to Applications
- Green Checkbox - Unknown sources
2) Browse to Dropbox.com - z4root - z4root.1.3.0.apk
- Download z4root 1.3.0
3) Connect MID V7 or MicroSD card to your computer
4) Copy z4root.1.3.0.apk to your downloads folder
5) Open a file explorer - such as ES File Explorer
- Browse to download
- Click on z4root.1.3.0.apk
- Click on Install
6) Open z4root from app menu
7) Click on Permanent Root

After a moment... your device will reboot and VIOLA! you should now have root access and the ability to un-root.

[FAQ] - About Rooting

I want to ask why the need to root the device?
Rooting allows the system to be fully "unlocked" so that anything and everything can be modified or tweaked.

What will it do to it exactly?
All it does is just unlocks the device

Can I reverse it back the way is was?
Yes. the z4root program as an un-root option.

I hear it deletes everything on it.
It doesn't delete anything from the system.
It only slightly modifies some base entries, but nothing would affect your day to day.

Will I have to reload the android software to it?
No will you will not have to reload anything.

Should I do a backup first before rooting?
It is never a bad idea to backup the system at any given point in time before making changes.

How much better will it run when I root it?
There is no direct improvement in performance by rooting.
It just provides the pathway and allowance for external tweaking and performance increases.

How do I get market access after I root it?
Rooting will not open the market directly... there may be some additional fixes, BUT!
There is an updated firmware being release in a week or so that should provide Android Market Access.

While I am a noob to this device I am not necessarily a "noob". I have a WPDN that I have worked with quite a bit. I just usually read and not post. My question is, I have heard it quite a bit and have a vague idea of what it is, but how do I actually "root" my MID 7. My version of root is simply that I put whatever data on the root directory of the device....what data (program/firmware/code....etc) do I place in the root directory if that is the case? Also i have not had any luck with installing anything related to google. Gmail installed but will not open. Same with older Market version that I have. I like the possibilities of this device vs the PDN mainly because of the voice and camera. Has anyone cracked this thing open yet to see the physical layout?

I haven't received mine yet, but was laying out the ground work to do similar things as I have done on the MID816 and C8 forums.
From what I have read in other threads... you should be able to use z4root to root the device pretty easily.
Then you could install and try Root Explorer to see if it prompts you with SuperUser access.

I will be creating a couple videos reviews and tear down when I receive mine.

For now here are some links:
Dropbox.com - z4root - z4root.1.3.0.apk
Dropbox.com - Root Explorer - com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer.apk

Hope that helps!

You may want to try SuperOneClick

Nope, that needs a usb connection to the pc. tablet has no usb port that can connect to pc, and superonceklick kills tha adb server in its first step so tcp/ip is not an option.

however z4root did do something and after some commands i got root. seems that the symbolic link to su in /bin was in the way

on a terminal app on the tablet
Code:
<br />
setprop service.adb.tcp.port 5555<br />
stop adbd<br />
start adbd<br />
(we can run adb over tcpip now)

on adb (you need a dev toolkit like appinventor to have adb on pc)
find out the tcpip address of tablet (i use my router gui for this)
Code:
<br />
adb connect 192.168.178.33:5555<br />
adb root <br />
adb shell<br />
# (welcomed by a root prompt horay!<br />
mv /bin/su /bin/su.org<br />
Run root check and [email protected]

/Edit: not there yet... i have had several hangs when i went into su mode....

Rooting procedure verified as working on my WM8650, M7007T (this is how the seller sells it).

Just to give a reference to my device (as no label or model is reliable, with these), let me report some info:

I tried again, after a new flash.

This time it worked.

-enable usb debugging (adb)
-ran z4root, permanent.
-in a terminal moved /bin/su away

apps can run as root(checked "root check", "titanium backup * root"), but are sometimes VERY SLOW.

DOES NOT WORK under Singularity Beta v5 ROM.
Busybox is installed correctly but root access is not granted. Any suggestions for another rooting apk?
As suggested to me, change your ROM of choice to this one for the time being, same base (1.5) is used, and it is rooted:

http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/19692-rom-m009smid-v7wm8650-7-netbook-modroid-v4-final-by-wicknix-based-on-131/

No doubt in time, Singularity v5 will be rooted, and then you/we can have a choice of what suits us best.

Many thanks to the rom creators for all their hard work. indeed

#Run programs from windows.

1.use android commander or Root Explorer.
2.delete busybox in system/
3.delete superuser.apk in system/app/
4.reboot
5.connect to pc and root with super one click!
6.done

#now all application who needs Superuser works perfectly

Hi there,
using Firmware version 1.5.1 , it doesn't work. I think z4root is for former versions of the FW.

Most all of the modified ROM's are already rooted. Unless you are still using the factory installed firmware there is no need to root.

Cheers

Hi there,
I would be very interested to learn a way to root the 1.5.1 firmware (and, more important, future FW versions > 1.5.1)
I tried several ways to root the 1.5.1, none of which worked.
I was actually trying to build a FW for pentesting with enhanced privacy, using TOR and including various network mapping tools.
Nevertheless, I now use Uberoid and simply install my tools. Still it would be intersting to know how to root this FW version, so if anyone could eleborate, I'm all ears....

I have installed Firmware and after flushing touch screen no worked. Then I re-named env_uboot to GREEN_env_uboot and Re-flushed tabelt.
Now after on, the green led working but no boot and no any action in my tablet. What can I do? How can I make bootable SD-CARD and how can I re-flushing?
