Make a USB Host Cable

Just a few photos to help with the process of converting a standard Eken (or Iphone type) cable to a USB Host cable to allow connecting a USB keyboard, mouse, thumb drive, or with power, a hard drive, etc.First step is separating the shell. I used an Exacto knife to carefully press a little down the parting line at each of the 4 corners of the shell, and also at the fake strain relief (really part of the hard plastic shell) surrounding the cable. This view is the top of the connector. When re-assembling it is very important to remember which way the pieces go, including pins, and the small catches at either side of the connector. Photos like these help.

Thanks for the tutorial from me as well. I just finally got it working, hooked my eken cable to a 4 port usb hub and got my keyboard and mouse working at the same time. I did have to file the top down like you said for it to connect properly, and sometimes there's a bit of lag on the connection, but it's pretty damn cool. Thank you!
Notice the position of the connector in the photo (bottom side up) with the plastic tabs at the top. Also note the orientation of the pins' date=' with the long part of the pin on the bottom. The connector hole locations are numbered from right to left in this position, 1 to 30. The holes are in groups of three. So pin hole 9 is the third group, and the third hole from the right. In this case, the pink wire goes there..[/QUOTE'] im a little confused, can you list color > hole number for the pins?cause the image isn't making sense to me
Hello, first let me say... the USB Host Cable works fine... Great work! One problem is left for me. I got a USB keyboard with an German Keylayout. Unfortunately the M001 allways uses an English Layout for the keyboard. (The sofware keyboard works fine in German)Does anybody have an idea how this layout for hardware keyboards could be changed?
this is so awesome i just hook up a external hard drive and the eken recognized it
can you sell me one? xD Im way too bad at this kind of things
I see what you are doing by bridging the two wired connections of a USB cable and the Eken cable. I do not want to hack apart the Eken cable but I am well within the ability to hack a Ipod connector if I know what pins need changing or what data and ground pins are used. Is there any chance of a simple schematic of the connection?
i took apart an ipod cable and found it was hard glued in with some black stuff. wasted a cable lol
thats what she said!but seriously, i ended up buying some dinky chinese knockoffs on ebay.
This thread proves you should have gotten the M003 since it has standard USB port....Lets do a M003 vs M001, I have the M003 but almost had the M001 (bought, cracked screen, returned and upgraded to M003..dealextreme ROCKs!)My List for M003 being better...Full size USB on M003 no adapter required. Wireless mouse, keyboard, hard drives, multiport USB hubs, bluetooth, Ipods, webcams? 3G modems? TV out?, endless opportunities. -800x600 screen resolution. MORE real estate! bigger is better for screen resolution. -Mirrored surface so you can check yourself out. Everyone thinks I got a $500 Ipad. Looks better than all other tablets.-MicroSD slot. This is the universal memory card to own. Get adapter and use same card on all your electronics. I got a 8gb that does 20mb/s speed new for $5.-No Bright annoying LEDs -Picture frame when not in use. Get cheap dish stand as holder. -Can use some Ipad accessories, I had to trim but put an Ipad screen cover on mine.-Road trip movie viewing, use Ipod settings on any transcoding program and put on microSD or USB thumb drive. -Connect audio out to home stereo, mount M003 and it's your audio manager, connect external hard drive and use a music manager. Pandora app is great for online audio listening. What are your PROS for M001 over M003 beside $30 cost.

Okay dokey. My colored wires are in a different order. Here's how mine are different:My Wire Configuration is: YELLOW - BROWN - BLUE - RED (from right to left)OP's Wire Configuration is: BLUE - YELLOW - RED - BROWN (from right to left)BASICALLY my RED wire was in the same spot OP's BROWN wire was. When I am finished should I put the my BROWN wire where the instructions put the BROWN wire OR should (with my configuration above) my BROWN wire go where the YELLOW wire ends up in the instructions?I hope that makes sense. This is the OEM 30pin to USB Male Cable that was supplied with my Eken M001.TIA!
Going back through the post I noticed that you asked for the PIN & WIRE configurations for the other cable, the one I have. Now I did write them down, but couldn't take a picture to confirm my setup. Upon looking at my notes and various parts of these instructions I'm confused as all heck. I have down that my wires are configured in different holes/pin placement than OP did.To the best of my ability (at the time of taking this cable apart) here is the PIN & WIRE configurations for the: YELLOW - BROWN - BLUE - REDYELLOW - PIN 26BROWN - PIN 24BLUE - PIN 22RED - PIN 15The above PIN placements are based off of using this picture as a guide: http://www.slatedroid.com/attachmen...0284639-make-usb-host-cable-connectorpins-jpg . Which has the PINS going 30 to 1 from left to right.I'm going to take apart the other side to see what placement the wires are on the USB Male side. I would also like to have a confirmation, from somebody else with the same cable, of my wire place settings in my notes. If anyone can help that would be awesome!

Okay...it seems as though I might have a bunk cable. The cable did work in Slave Mode, but it did that SD Card error thing that happens so some people (when it was connected to a pc, the pc would connect then disconnect then reconnect the SD Card as a device).Using this picture for the PIN Guide: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/67/USB.svg . The wires are connected in the following order:BLUE - PIN 1BROWN - PIN 2YELLOW - PIN 3RED - PIN 4One note is that PIN 2, the brown wire, is plugged in the opposite than the other wires. It looks like it has been placed into the slot upside down.So what now?
