internal vs. SD card access speed

Has anyone done a speed test on the transfer rates of the internal microSD vs. the SD card?I will do this later today, I intend to copy a 200M or larger file to the internal memory (micro-SD) through USB and time the process. Then I will repeat the process to the SD card memory. Now I know alot of factors such as SD card speed (class) will affect the results but has anyone done a baseline comparison? I remember the other day I was only getting 2MB/s (as reported by Windows Vista copying dialog) when copying to the internal micro-SD (stock 1g).Also I noticed when trying to sync storage with a 350M file on the SD card to the internal micro-SD using the Novel, the progress indicator never moved.

I haven't done any official tests, but I can tell you, copying files to either internal microSD or external SD thru the PDN is pretty slow... around 5mb/s. When I plug directly into my desktop thru an adapter, I usually get twice that fast, if not faster. So the PDN is a bottleneck.
I spent a little time going some tests tonite. Below is a series of tests I did on the SD and microSD cards.Both my internal PD_Novel and external SDCARD have the same 8GB Sandisk Class2 microSDHC.1st Test is with the card plugged into the built-in SD slot on my Acer Aspire One Netbook (rightside).-----------------------------------------------------------------------CrystalDiskMark 3.0 (C) 2007-2010 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : Crystal Dew World-----------------------------------------------------------------------* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s] Sequential Read : 15.632 MB/s Sequential Write : 3.966 MB/s Random Read 512KB : 15.097 MB/s Random Write 512KB : 2.601 MB/s Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 1.170 MB/s [ 285.6 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.577 MB/s [ 140.9 IOPS] Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 0.901 MB/s [ 219.9 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.579 MB/s [ 141.4 IOPS] Test : 50 MB [E: 47.0% (3559.3/7572.0 MB)] (x2) Date : 2010/08/26 0:52:49 OS : Windows XP Home Edition SP3 [5.1 Build 2600] (x86) For the next test I moved it to the Storage Expansion SD card slot, still on my Netbook(leftside).-----------------------------------------------------------------------CrystalDiskMark 3.0 (C) 2007-2010 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : Crystal Dew World-----------------------------------------------------------------------* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s] Sequential Read : 15.730 MB/s Sequential Write : 3.945 MB/s Random Read 512KB : 14.824 MB/s Random Write 512KB : 2.498 MB/s Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 1.395 MB/s [ 340.6 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.575 MB/s [ 140.3 IOPS] Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 1.704 MB/s [ 416.1 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.581 MB/s [ 141.9 IOPS] Test : 50 MB [E: 47.0% (3559.3/7572.0 MB)] (x2) Date : 2010/08/26 0:59:25 OS : Windows XP Home Edition SP3 [5.1 Build 2600] (x86) Those should give us a good base line for the card and computers performance.The next test is the internal microSDHC PD_Novel using USB Connection to Windows XP Netbook (USB 2.0)-----------------------------------------------------------------------CrystalDiskMark 3.0 (C) 2007-2010 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : Crystal Dew World-----------------------------------------------------------------------* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s] Sequential Read : 13.303 MB/s Sequential Write : 3.314 MB/s Random Read 512KB : 13.700 MB/s Random Write 512KB : 3.630 MB/s Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 4.626 MB/s [ 1129.3 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 3.907 MB/s [ 954.0 IOPS] Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 5.348 MB/s [ 1305.7 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 3.441 MB/s [ 840.0 IOPS] Test : 50 MB [G: 54.1% (4099.5/7572.0 MB)] (x2) Date : 2010/08/26 0:31:29 OS : Windows XP Home Edition SP3 [5.1 Build 2600] (x86)The last test is the external microSDHC(in adapter) SDCARD using USB Connection to Windows XP Netbook (USB 2.0)-----------------------------------------------------------------------CrystalDiskMark 3.0 (C) 2007-2010 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : Crystal Dew World-----------------------------------------------------------------------* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s] Sequential Read : 13.795 MB/s Sequential Write : 3.556 MB/s Random Read 512KB : 14.119 MB/s Random Write 512KB : 3.448 MB/s Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 4.873 MB/s [ 1189.7 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 1.368 MB/s [ 333.9 IOPS] Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 5.147 MB/s [ 1256.6 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 1.439 MB/s [ 351.4 IOPS] Test : 50 MB [E: 47.0% (3559.3/7572.0 MB)] (x2) Date : 2010/08/26 0:37:41 OS : Windows XP Home Edition SP3 [5.1 Build 2600] (x86) I did not like these results and I ran the 2 pass test again, SDCARD - USB-----------------------------------------------------------------------CrystalDiskMark 3.0 (C) 2007-2010 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : Crystal Dew World-----------------------------------------------------------------------* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s] Sequential Read : 13.810 MB/s Sequential Write : 3.472 MB/s Random Read 512KB : 14.125 MB/s Random Write 512KB : 3.858 MB/s Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 4.592 MB/s [ 1121.1 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 4.372 MB/s [ 1067.4 IOPS] Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 5.174 MB/s [ 1263.3 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 2.980 MB/s [ 727.6 IOPS] Test : 50 MB [E: 47.0% (3559.3/7572.0 MB)] (x2) Date : 2010/08/26 0:46:08 OS : Windows XP Home Edition SP3 [5.1 Build 2600] (x86)

So it looks like the USB Connection is Faster the directly plugging in the card to the computer, especially with smaller clusters 4k. Perhaps USB buffering by the Novel makes transfer with USB seem quicker?
Here is another speed test, this is a 4GB SD SanDisk Ultra II (15MB/s Class 2 SDHC) plugged into my netbooks sd reader.-----------------------------------------------------------------------CrystalDiskMark 3.0 (C) 2007-2010 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : Crystal Dew World-----------------------------------------------------------------------* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s] Sequential Read : 18.390 MB/s Sequential Write : 17.260 MB/s Random Read 512KB : 17.888 MB/s Random Write 512KB : 3.277 MB/s Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 5.394 MB/s [ 1316.9 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.033 MB/s [ 8.1 IOPS] Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 5.560 MB/s [ 1357.5 IOPS] Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.057 MB/s [ 14.0 IOPS] Test : 50 MB [G: 89.5% (3468.2/3875.3 MB)] (x2) Date : 2010/08/28 16:17:03 OS : Windows XP Home Edition SP3 [5.1 Build 2600] (x86)
