I'll be posting a review in a couple days. The short of it is that I like it better as an e-reader but the white Novel is a better tablet. The main reason I'm posting now is to ask for suggestions. What do you want me to check? (I tried the hack already; it didn't work.)I did a teaser video:

Bummer on the no hack...1. Why do you like it better as a Reader?2. You mentioned there is a "speaker" on the back. Only 1 or are there 2?
we need to know why the hack didn't work. what exactly did it do?

Premptive guesses (though I'm not sure what he's referring to as "the hack")New device ID for new device, so drivers not foundADB disabled out of the box. That one would kind of suck
Thought I'm sure it can be flashed to have adb enabled.

The black Novel has a matte finished display, as opposed to the white Novel's glossy display. That makes it easier to read as an e-reader.
ADB being disabled--if true--would suck; I don't imagine PD doing that with all the free bug testing they're getting from everyone. But stranger things...

I've been asked to hold the review until the black Novel ships on the 18th.For some reason they didn't think to tell me this before they shipped it other wise I might not have started this thread.Oh, well, too late now.The Black Novel installs its own USB driver correctly. The hacked driver we were using for the white Novel doesn't work for the black one. So far all I've tried is plugging in the Novel and running ADB devices. The black Novel wasn't seen.
damn, i originally wanted the black one...but if I have to wait till the 18th i might as well wait for the Cruz tablet. I kinda like the white one though..I feel like everyone would mistake the black version for an ipad. How did you get a black one early?
Find someone with a Linux box and try from that, since the driver issue doesn't apply.......

Pandigital likely sent him one to review. I ran into a couple of articles and videos of his, about the Novel, when I was researching it.

do you get any yellow unknown devices in the windows device manager?

I really don't see how the black is any improvement over the white. your video further strengthens my opinion that the black is a cost reduced model.
Unless he installed a software CD (or the driver is on internal storage), I don't see how the black one could have installed it's own USB driver. Maybe he just means to storage showed up.

I agree with nate's opinion of the black stand - it is pretty cheap.however I like the white stand and I use it every night.also, I thought they switched to usb charging for the black? what is the voltage output on the ac charger?
I guess my question would be, if the black one were hackable, would you prefer it to the white? I don't care about being able to upgrade the internal sd card. The external sd card slot can store all of my books, movies, music, etc. Also, the single speaker isn't that big of a deal since the dual speakers aren't that great anyway. If the black one is better overall, and can be hacked, I'll return instead of exchange my white one!
