Well, i have managed to root it! The steps that i have used:

Installed the OMA CWM recovery, not with OMA method ,but with the one mention here: http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/74665-clockworkmod-on-v88/

-- just replaced the recovery.img with oma's one--

Then booted to CWM with command "adb reboot recovery" and install the "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.91.zip" file.

Finally, rebooted to OS and installed the SuperSU app from Google store. It was able to update the su-binary on first run and that was it. Rooted at last

Hi,

unfortunately the method null describes doesn't work for me on the V88s Kitkat Rom from 04/18. Updating the su-binary with SuperSU doesn't work, although installing "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.91.zip" via CWM works fine.

@null: Did you do something else in order to get it to work? What KitKat Version are you running?

@burakos: if ADB doesnt' work you can install cwm via RkAndroidtool like stated here:

http://androtab.info/clockworkmod/rockchip/install/

Booting into CWM works by shutting the device off, then holding VOL+ and On/off Button for approx. 5 seconds

Edit: root seems to work when using latest version of shuame http://www.shuame.com/ just download using the arrow left of 2.1.1 and 2014.04.17 on the website

Managed to root mine without a computer after the USB port broke for no reason (damnit China!)

I bought my 1st gen V88 1GB ram when I was in China and they'd only just come out - so you have to buy whatever they have in the shop rather than the 2GB version I wanted ^_^;;;

WARNING: This is my first attempt rooting so I have not double checked my permissions/success, since I'm not sure how.

So, method to root without a computer:

1. Install aptoide app market through a browser

2. Install Vroot from the aptoide market - it will say it's not in the store, so tap 'search website' and it will come up. Symbol is a blue anchor. Don't choose the plain 'root', only the 'Vroot'

3. Vroot is a Chinese app, it is called ROOT dashi (master) once it opens up. Run the app. It should tell you it has been successful.

4. I used RootChecker after this, it said I did not have root permission, sadness : (

5. Immediately downloaded SuperSU from Playstore, ran that app. It asked for root access permission twice then asked to delete other 'conflicting' SU access programs, clicked yes.

6. Used RootChecker again, it told me I had root access!

So hopefully, that's all correct and will be useful for you. I spent several hours fighting with computer USB drivers until the USB port packed in, but this method worked in a few minutes.

Can anyone recommend which of the V88 ROMs has the best functionality? For example, if I end up with no WiFi after flashing, that severely limits what I can do with a broken USB port.
