Have tried putting in a 2GB micro SD card into the approprite slot. It does not seem to engage properly with the normal click whichever way I put it in.Am I missing something?My device purports to be an A-Pad

Gold pads always face down, it should have a little arrow on top.

It clicks easily here, something must be wrong with your card or your apad.

Almost every Chinese manufacturer and reseller of slates claims that it is an aPad or A-Pad or APad or... Without pics or link to pics, it's impossible to tell what you have. I have several devices with slots for micro-SD cards. Some have the click in/click out type of slot, others push in/pull out. A "genuine" aPad should be of the former variant.
