I have another tablet with same processor (Allwinner) and I was thinking of using this rom on it. I wanted to know what is the hardware on vi40 to check if the rom will work.
The tablet I have is also 9.7" and has realtek wifi adapter (8192cu), what else should I worry about ?

Okay folks. I got my VI40 with 4.0.1 factory installed. I have tried several times to update this to 4.0.3. I have installed, uninstalled, and re-installed the usbdrivers according to Colonel Zap (instructions listed below taken from his blog site; Thanks CZ!). At step 12, livesuit does not recognize the tablet and, therefore, will not install the upgrade.

Do any of you have any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Onda Vi40 Firmware Flashing Guide by Francis
A very heplful firmware flashing guide was posted by Francis right here, this kind of information should no get "lost", so I decided to make this new post for it. Thank you so much, Francis!!! :)

1) First and before all, check in the settings / developer options that the USB debugging mode is set. Whilst you are in the settings, look where (which menu item) you can change the language as after you installed the 4.0.3 everything and I mean EVERYTHING will be in Chinese.

2) Identify in the Serial Number, at the back of the Tablet, whether you have a v1 or v3, important to decide which image version you need (next step).

3) Download from the Onda site (CLICK) the Livesuit (loader and flasher) which contains the img and the drivers. Select the right button depending on the table version (v1 or v3). The image is correct but the drivers and the Livesuit version aren't (well, they weren't for me) that's why we will download another Livesuit in step -6-

Edit: Vi40_V1_Android4.0.3_v0.6.zip
Vi40_V3_Android4.0.3_v0.6.zip

4) Decompress the Livesuit folder you loaded in -3- with a decompression tool such as WINZIP, WINRAR or anything else. If you have a decompression tool, select the Decompress (unzip) here option (right click on the folder).

5) Identify where the image file is (.img) and remove the Chinese characters from its name (as the other Livesuit we download in -6- will not upload the file with these characters…..).

6) Now you have the right ICS image on your PC. We now need to download the right Livesuit and drivers, you'll find them here: (CLICK)

7) Decompress the Livesuit downloaded in -6-

Launch the Livesuit downloaded in -6- but then select in Livesuit the img (the one you removed the Chinese characters from in its name) you downloaded in -3-

For the following, check also ColonelZap video.

9) Power off (complete shutdown) your tablet.

10) Press the Middle button (the menu key)

11) Connect your tablet to the PC

12) Whilst pressing the middle button, press several times the power button of your table. That should trigger the installation of the driver and initiate the flashing. Several windows will pop-up, just continue the process (don't abort it, answer yes or continue to all).

13) That's it. When finished (it goes pretty fast), power on the tablet and select the language (you'll get several windows in chinese popping-up, answer anything to be able to access quickly the settings and change the language).

I've run the Chinese instructions through a translator and it says to press the power button 3 times, which worked for me; give that a try and see how you get on..

The problem is fixed. The driver and livesuit version were wrong. I don't know how I downloaded the wrong ones, but I did.

My tablet is on the new firmware, with installed gapps, and is rooted!

My camera works fine after the fix ie no force close errors, but even before the fix my rear camera has strange vertical lines so i guess the rear camera on mines is faulty.

This maybe be a silly question hence why i didnt want to start a new topic. Is there anyway we can get Android 2.3 running on this tablet. The reason why i ask is im trying to get the Skygo app working i can get by the not supported devices now but can only watch sky news. None of the sport channels work etc this is because of ICS and not the stock kernel for a galaxy phone since we have spoofed the market into thinking its a Samsung Galaxy. Sorry for the post if it has been covered already as im still reading up on lots of topics. Thx for any help or advice on this matter. Ghost

A new version of the firmware for the Vi40 has appeared at the ONDA website

ONDA VI40 Firmware update

http://www.onda.cn/Mp3/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductId=179

4.03 v0.8

File size: 275M
Update: 2012-02-24
Description: (A) enhance the stability of the system.
(2) system integrated part of Google applications, such as: Google electronics market
Increase in system compatibility, support for updating the application software installation.

Note:
1, the firmware package containing upgrade instructions, please read carefully before flashing.
2, after the upgrade was successful, the entire boot process, not by hand or other objects touch capacitive screen (program auto-calibration touch screen), otherwise it will affect the touch effect.
3, the query version number, check the back of the fuselage SN code sections 9, 10;

This one supports Android market and adds a slew of other new applications too (although mostly Chinese - I may have to learn Mandarin :) )

I have loaded this one (takes ages from the website so you have to be patient) and appears to work well so far.

I have access to the market and in the system info tab there is an Upgrade (for the Firmware) now present.

I must admit I have only had this tablet for a week so far (here in Australia) and it is my first run with Android but I am more than pleased with my purchase.

Anyone waiting for this one all I can say is that it is worth it.

ONDA VI40 Firmware update mirror 4.03 v0.8 .
#19 ·
Nice improovements so far, better camera, no lag on volume slider, market preinstalled.
Will modify my script for this version. From what I saw on aurora forums mali drivers
are ready, also flash working on a betta they trying, I'm sure they are doing the same at onda.
Advice install Apex launcher from xda forums, same as native launcer interface but much
faster and full of option.
