START WITH THE WIKI Introduction to the Pandigital Novel

Please don't make me start deleting, moving, and combining threads by asking whatever comes to mind. There's been a lot of recent development on this device, and a LOT of your questions will have been asked already here. Take 10 minutes and look around before posting a noob question. We love our noobs, but we love them more when they help unnoobing themselves...This has become an epidemic problem here, so now we're going to have to add teeth: look before you ask. If you really think you're the first person to ask about changing the internal micro sd card, or to have problems flashing the device, that means you didn't look, and I am going to issue you an infraction. I won't enjoy it, but it's for the good of the community.

I get to the command prompt thru run cmd.exe, then get to C:> amd.exe. enter DIR and a list of commands scroll down. Is it at this point that I should type in and enter the command lines to install SPK's and rotation fix? Or is there another way to do this?
type adb devices with the pdn attached and on. what do you see? Do youhave adb.exe in your windows path, or are you changing directory to get the command in the directory with adb in it. Then you can type adb remount, at which you can type to push, pull, and adb install apks.
THANK YOU!! I finally figured out the ABD command prompts and was able to install some APK's. I also installed the rotation fix, but for some reason, it's not working (used Market + Rotation Framework.jar). I will play around with the PDN this week and see what else I can install. Only issue I continue to have is the WIFI, I can scan my local networks, but the signal is not stable. Can get online...Any suggestions?
I didn't install anything tricky until I had wifi stable. I installed fw 3 times or so to get there. The best I can tell you is when you're dropping a lot, literally go into setup, turn wifi OFF, wait 15 seconds or so, then turn it back on and be patient while it handshakes.I really, really endorse having no fear, and just (figuratively) bashing the thing. For $100 to replace, you can't hurt it but so much, and BB and Kohl's will take almost anything back. Why not have no mercy? The more you screw it up, the more you learn to fix it.
Due to other postes I have made I keep being pointed to read the Wiki... With the fast changes is the WiKi up-to-date? As many of the links seem to take the user to middle of forum threads? And some of the links on my PC were dead links??Kind of like buying a used book only to find pages have been torn out of it...:David
The mods, including the wikimod, do the best they can, and put a lot of hours in with no pay, and very, very little thanks. I imagine hitting "last" when you get to the middle of a thread isn't all that hard considering you're getting what amounts to tech support and development work from volunteers for free. This is, however, EXACTLY why we don't want to start a new thread every time someone asks the same question that's been asked 3,000 times, and why senior members pick on people who obviously don't search at all, or in some cases don't even look at the posts listed on the first page of the pandigital board... If instead the wiki had to link to 3,000 threads, all the mods would quit, and this would basically turn into a self-serve help site... if anyone would help anyone at that point, that is.

quick question, do I have to reapply the hacks after flashing a new stock firmware?

Quick answer: yes.It will wipe your non-Pandigital apps, destroy your user/data, and bring the device back to original condition. A clean slate suitable for hacking or returning it to the place of purchase.

in the wiki there first link is to "Beginners Guide to hacking the Pandigital Novel"I am new and like most of us we just got our PDN, thanks to winaux.I will use that guide.i have question:take out of the box, charge it upi will follow it step by step from step 0 to step 4.1. when should i update firmware or i don't need to?2. step 3 is to install Panda Home, I saw in one of the post someone sugguest to install either Launcher Pro or (another one i have to look up) instead of Panda Home, any recomemdation?I am still doing reading and research in here, so if anyone can give us general sumary step by step out of the box for us newbie.thanks in advance,
there is a newer consolidated hack, and a couple of good update mods, including nchanterman's. I really, really, really, really suggest you look around here while the thing charges. you have a few options to the same goal.

Seconding this. If you want Google Market, go with one of roebeet's ROMs. If not, nchntrmans (or possible roebeet's if he offers one, up to you). There's really no good reason to mess with adb to get to a usable point.
thanks will search for the consolidate one
if you want nchntr's install here is a walkthrough for that

If you want to install the all in one get this one, get the 8-20 file, drop the zip on your SD card, shut down the PDN, start up holding vol up and the power switch for 5 seconds, release and watch it load.

We prefer you necro threads to avoid clutter. Feel free to revive the ugly market hack... I'm still using it.
I want to say that the "WiKi" have been updated a lot from as little as a week ago...But I would prefer not to be pointed to active forum threads. I would prefer to be pointed to a 'locked' message that has a header such as an example" Topic XYZ; effective Sept 01, 2010; check forum thread for updated info: http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigital-novel-android-tablet-discussion/Topic_XYZ

I get that. You'll note that many (most even) of the threads with important info/links/instructions/hacks and downloads linked in the Wiki are providing the basic info and downloads in the first post - which is controlled AND UPDATED by the Dev who authored it. As things change, they update their first post with new files and tips as needed. It's just the way things are around here, which works with the nature of the forum architecture.Sometimes they even update the name of the thread, which has the unfortunate result of breaking Wiki links. I'm trying to keep up with that so the Wiki doesn't send folks to cyber-purgatory, and I'm also trying to spread the word subtly (hint) that Devs need to update the wiki links when they change a thread's name or figure out a title that will work through upgrades.

Thanks I just got my novel yesterday, I purchased it already rooted, but I'm a single father of 3 little ones wanted to avoid the hassle. This site is amazing & this thread w/ the above info is fantastic Thanks!
So i gotthe white novel e-reader, did some lurking, read the tut's and guides for hacking, applied the basic hacks, added 2 different homescreens, panda and "home" they are called on the selection screen, went on to the advanced hacks, tried the ugly market hack didnt work the first time, tried the non ugly that didnt work, so i went back to the ugly and got it to work, got the ID from the emul, and applied it to the device, and finally did the wifi fix hack, restarted the wifi and the green wifi thing up top.Now my problem is when i run the market app, i can browse the apps and start downloading them, however the download sits at "starting download" forever. I clearly have internet, im able to browse the net and do email and even the fast the market apps show up is attributed to my internet, right? Is my ID faulty?ooooor? Thanks,Lurker

I did a quick search for "hangs" knowing this is something that's popped up before and found this post in the Non-Ugly-Hack thread where someone had the same problem.

There's a way to check your ID if you read through that thread. That's where they really bug-fixed the Market access. It's a sticky thread for a reason.
