FAQ & wiki here-NEWBIES INFRACTIONS WILL ISSUE IF YOU DON'T READ AROUND B/F ASKING

START WITH THE WIKI Introduction to the Pandigital Novel

Please don't make me start deleting, moving, and combining threads by asking whatever comes to mind. There's been a lot of recent development on this device, and a LOT of your questions will have been asked already here. Take 10 minutes and look around before posting a noob question. We love our noobs, but we love them more when they help unnoobing themselves...This has become an epidemic problem here, so now we're going to have to add teeth: look before you ask. If you really think you're the first person to ask about changing the internal micro sd card, or to have problems flashing the device, that means you didn't look, and I am going to issue you an infraction. I won't enjoy it, but it's for the good of the community.

WOW that was amazing bornagainpenquin this is exactly what I was hoping to get this may have been common sense for many but for me its a whole missing set of instructions perhaps it could be added to the original on page one to help out "stoob" (stupid noob) like myself. I was using Hack-the-Novel1.zip to get it going and it worked I double checked for the RT2870STA.dat file and it was there in the "Hack" folder with my ADB. Thank you so much for your patience and not giving up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'It seems to cause the PDN to take an extremely long time to boot up when you do this--I don't know if it triggers a recaching somehow or what? So long as you don't panic it seems to work alright. Still, it does seem like things have been shifted about a bit in the latest firmware release because I don;t remember it taking as long to reboot with the 7-24 firmware. Also, doing this seems to disable the WiFi or at least it did for me. Turning it on again did the trick and the connection seems to be a bit better over all compared to what it was before. Placebo effect?Glad I was able to help you along!--bornagainpenguin
I don't understand when you say open my browser....???? I'm truly not a tech person please forgive me.... when I plug in the PDN I see both the Novel and the SD card... can you please give me a step by step to how to do this.... I really want to do this on my macthank you
Can someone give me step-by-step instructions on how to relash to OEM fw? What is the difference between reflashing and rebooting?

Download the firmware file from Pandigital's site under downloads --make sure you get the whole file.
Some people have had issues with thatput it on an sd card --believe it or not, some people have had problems with that.
It needs to be on the card, not on your computer.
power the pdn ALL THE WAY OFF (hold the switch until the dialogue box comes up and turn it off that way)
--alternatively, you can GENTLY push a paper clip into the reset hole in the tophold up on the volume key, while holding up on it, turn the device on
(if you hit the reset hole, you hold the power and volume asap after that)hold on until you see the android unpack screen.
Where can I find PDN 07-24-10 original firmware that has not been modded? Please provide a link.

#1 of this thread.
I just want to say thanks so much for these guys. This thing is an awesome deal with that coupon and pricematch thanks to these mods!
For a linux (Mint 7 at least) PC, you can pretty much follow the Mac instructions for installing/using adb, BUT I also had to start the adb server with sudo to get around permissions issues accessing the PDN:sudo adb start-serverAfter that, all the adb commands worked for me - bootiful!RO
Is there a way to acces home switcher from the PDN homescreen? I have homeswitcher on my pandahome (or openhome, whichever it is) screen so I can get back to PDN homescreen. But I can't get from PDN to Pandahome. I am having to restart to choose a home screen. Thought it worked once using the down volme button but not now.Thank you!
Just use the back button (lower volume with the volume hack).
That was working but has now stopped. can I redo the volume hack to get it working again?

Yep. You sure can.

Why not make a FAQ sticky? I'll even help get it started...
Where can I find the latest official firmware?Pandigital » Downloads
How can I tell what version of the firmware I have or if I have the latest?
What version of Android is the Pandigital Novel running?Android 2.0.0
What are the hardware specs?Processor: Samsung s3c6410xh-53 1009 ARM (533MHz)
Compatible Media Sources: Secure Digital (SD), MMCInternal Memory:
2GB (Samsung KMAKG0000M-B998)
Wolfson's WM8350G DAC chipBattery: Rechargeable Li-ion 2800mAh, 3.7V
Actually, dmesg shows my Novel has "Memory" = 204MB (that would be the RAM that is used for program code/execution vs file storage).
That "MB" seems to be 1 million decimal 1,000,000,000), not the usual binary form of 1,024 (1 "KB") times 1,024 (1,048,576), which means 204 "MB(dec)" = 195.5 "MB(bin)".

That means to me that dmesg is not showing some of the RAM on this line (probably reserved for whatever this Samsung ARM CPU sets aside for dedicated hardware memory mapping, video RAM, etc) since that would not seem to be any standard memory chip size (or combination) that I have always seen as some "power of 2" multiple whether MB or GB.

In fact dmesg shows "G3D_RESERVED_MEM_SIZE : 32 MB", so that should be the VRAM. That would leave about 28 MB's of a 256MB total for "misc reserved RAM", but certainly nowhere near 2GB for total RAM.
I believe later fw has taken "stock" processor speed to 800mhz??

Yup..........
Newbie that has spent alot of time reading posts on this site...I've had my PDN for about a month now and was able to follow the novice and moderate instructions to get the basics working volume back/menu new home screen, google etc.(wifi is still not stable...). I wanted to know if there was a posted thread regarding the basics of ADB.exe. More specific, how to get to the comand prompt and edit, not only to install APK's, but the 270 rotation fix (framework.jar) and market. I'm using a laptop w/xp pro, and figured out how to get to the c: prompt, but  using ADB to install to PDN.Thanks
Have you used Nate's Hack? It's #1 http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigital-novel-android-tablet-discussion/2199-beginners-guide-hacking-pandigital-novel.html here. I think you might be looking for the ADB set up which is in the first download. After that, you can install apps or other hacks using ADB. #5 on FIX: PDN 270-degree rotation explains exactly how to do that one. You have to be in the directory that has the ADB tools folder. I think the Consolidate Hack by enjoys1 (based on clockworx hack) does this also. I think I used it and it set up the folder "android-sdk-windows" which has the tools folder that contains the ADB exe. So when I open cmd window, I change directory by typing in cd C:android-sdk-windows/tools at the prompt. You want to go to whatever directory has your ADB.exe and list the tools folder. Then just follow scripts for whatever you want to do.Hope this is what you were asking for. If there's a simpler or newer way, I'm sure someone will let you know.
I have ADB.exe in my folder, but do I also need Android SDK set up (no files with that name are in my main folder)? Not sure if it was d/l with ADB. When I click on ADB, the command prompt comes up and is running something, then it disapears.
do you know how to open the command prompt? If you could open the command prompt and run adb.exe rather than just clicking on it, we could see what was going wrong with things...
