FAQ & wiki here-NEWBIES INFRACTIONS WILL ISSUE IF YOU DON'T READ AROUND B/F ASKING

START WITH THE WIKI Introduction to the Pandigital Novel

Please don't make me start deleting, moving, and combining threads by asking whatever comes to mind. There's been a lot of recent development on this device, and a LOT of your questions will have been asked already here. Take 10 minutes and look around before posting a noob question. We love our noobs, but we love them more when they help unnoobing themselves...This has become an epidemic problem here, so now we're going to have to add teeth: look before you ask. If you really think you're the first person to ask about changing the internal micro sd card, or to have problems flashing the device, that means you didn't look, and I am going to issue you an infraction. I won't enjoy it, but it's for the good of the community.

I reset it......whew.......Im going to read every post again not going to give up........ I read the NOT ugly market fix. explanation of mac is vague... I did get emulator to work, could not get a img, file will not open on mac.... thanks.......... is there a way to just start over.......
flash the new fw and that will effectively start over.
sorry I have no idea of what that means or how to do it..... never done this before.... sorry for so much trouble...(flash the new fw clueless) I'm really new......
If you're stuck using Mac only, and you can't/won't install the Android SDK (cuz you don't have one of the newer Intel machines) all is not lost. http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigital-novel-firmware-development/4664-hacked-non-intel-mac.html

You can install a new home page using the PDN's browser plus a ton of free apps you can get without Market access. After the new home page, a file manager is next on my list. http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigita...ad-apps-your-computer-no-market-required.html

Lack of a home button is still a drag on the PDN, but there's a work-around. http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigita...ion/2632-way-get-around-lack-home-button.html Or you can flash an upgrade to Roebeet's modified 7_24 firmware. I'm avoiding that right now because I've seen too many WiFi complaints with the 7_24 FW - including mine.

Since I can now install apk's, the Button Hack is the only major thing out there I know I want/must have that's Hacky. The Google experience was pretty good too (which you also get with Roebeet's flash, but you still have no AndroidID) but I was disappointed with Google's mobile version of the Calendar.) http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigita...irmware-created-market-volume-hack-built.html

There's even a Better Terminal Emulator.apk I hope might run on the PDN (I haven't tried it yet). This might be the computer-free way to do the button hack, and only the button hack, directly from the PDN. Better Terminal Emulator V3.17 - Android Applications, Softwares, Freewares, HTC T-MOBILE G2, HTC T-MOBILE G1 Apps free download

flashing firmware is how Pandigital lets you upgrade.
There's an upgrade link on your PDN itself, and one on Pandigital's web site.
You can download their zip file (current version they're supporting is dated 7/18),
copy it over to your external SD (Don't unzip the file)
then reboot your PDN while holding both the volume +up button and on-switch until you see a little green Android.
Leave it all alone until it reboots and shows your home screen.That's all there is to flashing.
I actually did the hack via pc (have button hack).... now Im back on a mac...... I see the PDN in finder but can't get any apps to install.... even tried ugly hack for market... imulator worked on mac desk top, couldn't get img to open.....
Honestly, it's as simple as using your browser.
Put whatever apk you want to install on your external SD.
Open your browser, then type (without the "quotes" substituting the name of your apk of course.)file:///sdcard/"instert_app_name_here".apk
Yes, there are three slashes before ///sdcard/.
The card might have a different name appearing on your mac, but the PDN recognizes it as "sdcard"
After a couple of weeks of reading but unable to really do anything but brick my toy, finding this out was a Ureka moment.

Why won't this forum let me edit typos? "sdcare" is of course "sdcard"
I'm using mac book pro (Intel Core Duo).. I see apps on the external sd not showing up on PDN.... are they really installed (no icons) really need office apps to work

Dear All,Thanks a lot to all of you for your valuable contributions. it helped me hacking my Novel which I flashed using the modified firmware and installed few applications using the SD card. However, I can't play Youtube videos and any other videos on the web. It's asking for Flash player and I installed flash_for_21.apk but still no luck. Could you please share how can I watch Youtube videos and watch some live video streaming on sites like CNN.com. Once again thanks to everyone. This forum rocks!!
This maybe a stupid question... Why can't I just run an '.apk' file from the SD card ?Is hacking the only method that will allow this ?
Youtube has an app that you can find throughout this forum. Just do a search and get the apk. Now for other sites you probably want to download Skyfire browser. This brower doesn't do Flash directly on our devices. You connect to CNN, ESPN and other sites with video through the Skyfire service (no fear, its free for now). You can view almost anything via this browser. Hope that helps.
##you'll see a response in the CommandPrompt of "68 KB/s (0 bytes in 1092.000s"##Keep Command Prompt open.
6. Open Notepad++
7. Change Line 33 (PSMode=) to PSMode=CAM
8. Save file
9. Go back to Command Prompt

You need to open the RT2870STA.dat file you should have pulled from your Pandigital Novel with earlier commands. From within the application you just need to find the line indicated and change the text as indicated. Is that clearer?--bornagainpenguin

No not clear I have never pulled such .dat file, is the procedure in this particular thread? If not what is the title of the thread and I will look it up. Thanks for the help.

The third post in this thread: http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigita...cussion/3704-newbie-how-guides.html#post26422 The source thread for this tip was: http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigital-novel-android-tablet-discussion/4235-waking-up-wi-fi.html hope that helps.--bornagainpenguin
That is where I got the instructions. But again I get lost during 6 thru 8, When i run the codes it runs but when it says to open Notepad++ and Change Line 33 (PSMode=) to PSMode=CAM, I dont know what this is, I open Notepad but there is nothing there, it does not say to download "/RT2870STA/RT2870STA.dat" I dont know what that is how does the command prompt and Notepad++ work together. I feel like there is a missing part of the instructions.
Thanks for pointing me to the right areas but I have been there and like I said it does not explain how 6-8 in the instructions work. Thanks for any clarifications Im very annoyed with the wifi not coming back on after sleep, I have to reboot all the time.

Okay let's go through it slowly. Where do you have your adb located? Are you using the Google Android SDK or are you using the kit from Hack-the-Novel1.zip or some other method to hack and install apks? How are you performing the commands in 1-5?

The bottom line is that you need to navigate to that directory and look for a file named RT2870STA.dat (which is really just a text file) and open it using a text editor that won't destroy the formatting of the file--which is very very important.

Once you open the file (using notepad++ which will preserve the necessary formatting) you should go to line 33 which should be:
Code:
PSMode=Max_PSP
and you want to change this so that line reads:
Code:
PSMode=CAM
Then save the file to the same directory it was pushed to using adb. Then you're back to #9 in the instructions, I think you said you know where to go from there on in?Hope this helps...--bornagainpenguin

WOW that was amazing bornagainpenquin this is exactly what I was hoping to get, this may have been common sense for many but for me its a whole missing set of instructions perhaps it could be added to the original on page one to help out "stoob" (stupid noob) like myself. I was using Hack-the-Novel1.zip to get it going and it worked I double checked for the RT2870STA.dat file and it was there in the "Hack" folder with my ADB. Thank you so much for your patience and not giving up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
