FAQ & wiki here-NEWBIES INFRACTIONS WILL ISSUE IF YOU DON'T READ AROUND B/F ASKING

START WITH THE WIKI Introduction to the Pandigital Novel

Please don't make me start deleting, moving, and combining threads by asking whatever comes to mind. There's been a lot of recent development on this device, and a LOT of your questions will have been asked already here. Take 10 minutes and look around before posting a noob question. We love our noobs, but we love them more when they help unnoobing themselves...This has become an epidemic problem here, so now we're going to have to add teeth: look before you ask. If you really think you're the first person to ask about changing the internal micro sd card, or to have problems flashing the device, that means you didn't look, and I am going to issue you an infraction. I won't enjoy it, but it's for the good of the community.

you're going to need adb to install the installer onto the device. only then can you install apks from the sdcard. This http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigita...ller-script-apply-all-hacks-apps-oneshot.html might get you where you want to be including the installer. I haven't run it, but it's designed to get it all done at once.
Nope, it's not in there. An installer like MonsterApp.apk is the ONE thing missing from that otherwise fantastic, platform independent way to upgrade/hack this thing to the Google Experience and button hack. You still need to get an Android ID to use Market (using Clockworx's method in reply #11 above or the more involved method in #3). Either way non-intel mac users are stuck since we can't run adb.

There's actually some pretty good reasons why an installer wasn't included in Roebeet's all-in-one-shot flash if anyone want's to follow along in that thread. The button hack, Google Experience etc. all reside in /system while apk's you install end up in /user.data which he didn't touch since it would wipe out any installations, preferences or calibrations you made before the flash. Altered 07/24 firmware created: Market, volume hack built-in
If you're stuck using Mac only, and you can't/won't install the Android SDK (cuz you don't have one of the newer Intel machines) all is not lost. http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigital-novel-firmware-development/4664-hacked-non-intel-mac.html

You can install a new home page using the PDN's browser plus a ton of free apps you can get without Market access. After the new home page, a file manager is next on my list. http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigita...ad-apps-your-computer-no-market-required.html

Lack of a home button is still a drag on the PDN, but there's a work-around. http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigita...ion/2632-way-get-around-lack-home-button.html Or you can flash an upgrade to Roebeet's modified 7_24 firmware. I'm avoiding that right now because I've seen too many WiFi complaints with the 7_24 FW - including mine.

Since I can now install apk's, the Button Hack is the only major thing out there I know I want/must have that's Hacky. The Google experience was pretty good too (which you also get with Roebeet's flash, but you still have no AndroidID) but I was disappointed with Google's mobile version of the Calendar.) http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigita...irmware-created-market-volume-hack-built.html

There's even a Better Terminal Emulator.apk I hope might run on the PDN (I haven't tried it yet). This might be the computer-free way to do the button hack, and only the button hack, directly from the PDN. Better Terminal Emulator V3.17 - Android Applications, Softwares, Freewares, HTC T-MOBILE G2, HTC T-MOBILE G1 Apps free download

flashing firmware is how Pandigital lets you upgrade.
There's an upgrade link on your PDN itself, and one on Pandigital's web site.
You can download their zip file (current version they're supporting is dated 7/18),
copy it over to your external SD (Don't unzip the file)
then reboot your PDN while holding both the volume +up button and on-switch until you see a little green Android.
Leave it all alone until it reboots and shows your home screen. That's all there is to flashing.
Honestly, it's as simple as using your browser.
Put whatever apk you want to install on your external SD.
Open your browser, then type (without the "quotes" substituting the name of your apk of course.)file:///sdcard/"instert_app_name_here".apk
Yes, there are three slashes before ///sdcard/.
The card might have a different name appearing on your mac, but the PDN recognizes it as "sdcard"
After a couple of weeks of reading but unable to really do anything but brick my toy, finding this out was a Ureka moment.

Why won't this forum let me edit typos? "sdcare" is of course "sdcard"

quick question do I have to reapply the hacks after flashing a new stock firmware?
Quick answer: yes.It will wipe your non-Pandigital apps, destroy your user/data, and bring the device back to original condition. A clean slate suitable for hacking or returning it to the place of purchase.

I want to say that the "WiKi" have been updated a lot from as little as a week ago...But I would prefer not to be pointed to active forum threads. I would prefer to be pointed to a 'locked' message that has a header such as an example" Topic XYZ; effective Sept 01 2010; check forum thread for updated info: http://www.slatedroid.com/pandigital-novel-android-tablet-discussion/Topic_XYZ
I get that. You'll note that many (most even) of the threads with important info/links/instructions/hacks and downloads linked in the Wiki are providing the basic info and downloads in the first post - which is controlled AND UPDATED by the Dev who authored it. As things change, they update their first post with new files and tips as needed. It's just the way things are around here, which works with the nature of the forum architecture.Sometimes they even update the name of the thread, which has the unfortunate result of breaking Wiki links. I'm trying to keep up with that so the Wiki doesn't send folks to cyber-purgatory, and I'm also trying to spread the word subtly (hint) that Devs need to update the wiki links when they change a thread's name or figure out a title that will work through upgrades.

I did a quick search for "hangs" knowing this is something that's popped up before and found this post in the Non-Ugly-Hack thread where someone had the same problem.
http://www.slatedroid.com/index.php?topic=4684.0

There's a way to check your ID if you read through that thread. That's where they really bug-fixed the Market access. It's a sticky thread for a reason.
There... be dragons. Damn you QVC.There was a whole heckuvalot of n00pid over at Facebook at the I Love the PDN page this last weekend too, for the white as well as the black. Tipster did some real damage with his misinformation/gimme a screenshot/ROM rip-off campaign. I left as many signposts and breadcrumbs as I could.
"Tipster did some real damage with his misinformation/gimme a screenshot/ROM rip-off campaign"What was that...? I missed it. His contributions to the community are subject to debate but what did I miss?
Not so much here, but the n00pid over at facebook kept me pretty busy last weekend. The exchanges where we clashed were deleted by the host, but his stuff remained ... until I walked the site owner step-by-step through the Nook Fix and then installing JackBox's OP and then again when he mod'd his spare black PDN. Fun times.
