The Eken m001 only displays 256 colors. This is by design and not a defect. It is cheap, it dithers well enough for people not to notice (tho its visible in video playback). I assume the m003 is the same.

I bet is not a millions colours, but I don't believe it's 256 colours. I think, it could be Hi-Colour (65K) or maybe 4096 colours like old handhelds. The graphics looks creepy when trying to rotate or when the screen is locked - besides, looks not so bad as cheap device. I still have my old palm-phone, HTC Wallaby with 4096 colours screen. I compared my graphics dithered to 4096 and displayed on EKEN, in my opinion EKEN shows better colours.

Can't say much bout the display itself :/

At 85k colors there is no reason to dither. Interesting, GIMP is able to reduce the colors down to a 256 color pallet with barely any difference. I think the jpeg compression is screwing with these numbers - is there a screen grab util that saves uncompressed?
