Hey guys,it's nice to see people working on custom ROMS (special thanks to ECOTOX!), but could anyone explain why we won't just compile a new kernel at all or just take a compiled one? I'm just a linux USER, so sorry for my ignorance. There a drivers for the components and we know the architecture of the CPU. On the other hand we know a way of booting and modifying the flash. So can't we just grab a compiled arm-linux-kernel or even linux itself (e.g. debian), "bind" the drivers and flash it? Why won't this work?Thank you :)Friedrich

Yes, I know :)On the other hand if they haven't put much effort on protecting the device from custom roms and rooting, why would they worry about the linux kernel source?IMHO we just have to send enough emails so they will get sick of it and release the kernel source code to stop the "spam" ;-)

And I really don't understand why they don't it. I mean, there is no disadvantage for them except they are using (illegally) proprietary source code and don't want us to see it ;)But perhaps there is a chance of the getting the code from the person who already sent the firmware update.

As there is no real consequence of not giving it away why do it? On one hand there is the off chance it helps their competitors on the other nothing. It may be possible to work backwards and get what you need to build a custom kernel. I used to own an HTC Magic 1.2 which didn't have the kernel source released at the time I got it and someone was able to reverse engineer it enough to come up with a patch that could be applied to the stock CM rom (which used a completely different kernel).http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=673613The OP is the guy that did the reverse engineering, if anyone thinks they might be capable of applying his work to the 001 they should contact him.

wondermedia/via has stated its not their responsibility to distribute source for devices based on their products. Its the manufacturers responsibility to do that.
