Coby Kyros 7015

Hi!

I just ordered a Coby Kyros 7015-4G. I've done a ton of research and read a ton of reviews. (The ones on HSN seem to have been made by extremely ignorant and impatient people) It seems like those expecting it to be a $149 iPad are upset but the more realistic folks are happy with it. I'm computer savvy and plan to root it and add market. I'm not expecting an iPad like experience, just a good sub-$200 or so tablet for websurfing, email, keeping tabs on my blog and website, reading, and Facebook/Twitter. Not real interested in music or videos (I have an iPod Touch and ultraportable notebook for those). Games would be nice, but not critical or anything. Did I make a good choice? My budget right now won't allow for a Samsung Galaxy Tab or anything over $200 or so.

Hi Sue. I just got my Coby tablet yesterday. I already have the Wits A81E, but an older one without the g-sensor. I couldn't pass this up for $159 CDN. Got mine at tigerdirect.ca.

So far, I like it. The screen is bright and clear. The touchscreen seems very responsive and accurate.

If you like Angry Birds, you're out of luck. It doesn't work. I'm not too happy with the speaker either. It's not very loud.

I have heard complaints about battery life, but I fired it up about three hours ago and I'm at 35% battery right now. I would say that I was surfing and checking email for about two hours steady so that's not too bad.

I haven't rooted or added the Market yet. I was just on my way to find out how to do that. Apparently it is possible and I think that someone has cooked up a ROM for Froyo. I'm going to check that out too.

Overall, I like it. It sounds like you have about the right level of expectation of this tablet, so I am sure that you will like it too. This thing is an incredible bargain for the price. If it breaks, you don't have to ship it back to China either.

Thanks so much for your input! I can't wait to get it!

I am also considering this tablet to replace my Pandigital novel. I was playing with it at the TigerDirect store over lunch an was impressed with the performance. This YouTube video should point you in the right direction when it comes time to root and customize.

There are many conflicting reports wrt battery life - some say 2 only hours - some say 4 or 5. Muttz - 65% consumed in 3 hours equates to 100% in 4.6 hours - seems respectable. What is your screen brightness setting?
I too Am Picking one Up tomorrow ...But i'm getting mine for $133.95 (Open Box at tiger direct)I just like the fact that I can hook this up via HDMI to my TV and watch movies .....I plan on Rooting Mine Also....Like Digidad said ..The battery life is Pretty good ..I guess From what I have read it can Last anywhere from 2-6 hours...Depending on what your using it for...

What are your thoughts? With all of the new A8 based Coby tablets running 2.3 announced at CES, is the 7015 worth buying at this point? Not sure on release dates, but some have suggested as early as March. That said, I can pick up a 7015 for ~ $160 CAD today - not sure how much the new ones will sell for. My other thought is that the general consensus seems to be that the build quality of the 7015 is pretty decent - I guess there is no guarantee that the new ones will be manufactured by the same third party or to the same standards. Also not sure how much resale value the 7015 will have after 6 months. Even $160 looks kinda steep for the specs compared to the Nook Color retailing for $90 more - though Nook would require a trip to the US as I am in Canada. Canada needs more tablets!!

The impulsive side of me wants to jump on this, but I suspect it would be wiser to wait. Just feeling kinda twitchy since my PDN died

The brightness is about 75% and you're right, the battery life is about 4 1/2 hours. That seems to be about the average for most of these tablets. I have also heard reports of only two hours. If that is the case, I would return it. Something is wrong there.
Well, I was excited to see at CES the MID1025 and MID1026 announced. But to my disappointment, these new tablets due sometime in March are really not that great: Coming only with 256MB, no GPS, no BT and prices I saw from 260 to 300$ for preorders, its not a real alternative to the ARCHOS 101. Or getting from Sears a reb G10 for $279 at the outlet. Guess I will wait.[/size]
I love my Cobu 7015 (have two) but the biggest disappointment is that Coby and Telechips refuse to release their source code which they obligated to do. With stock firmware, its ok but has so much potentiol.
If you still on the fence, I would hold off or at least get the Archos 101...good reviews and source is available. I believe we shoudl start seeing a flood of tablets from March onwards. All stores are trying
to ger rid of the old stock now.
I am purchasing one of these as an interim tablet before I buy a Honeycomb tablet later this year or next. What are the reviews post rooting? Will this allow Flash from the Android Market like I have on my EVO?
