I have Calibre installed and the normal PC inface works fine.If I use a slate and goto http://{Calibre_server_ip}:8080 I see my books and can search. But when I try to d/l I get a download failed message. Doesn't seem to matter which slate or browser I use.Downloads work on blackberry phone.http://mogrithsden.dynalias.com:8080 connects but downloads fail also. (no I am not publishing my password here)

I tried, I could connect to your server, that means the server is working, but since you don't publish your password, I couldn't visit the page.
