ok thanks. On regular Linux the keyboard layout would be configured via X server or via some preferences tools in KDE or Gnome. But how does this work on Android?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you cannot change the keyboard layout in Android. You would have to install other "keyboard applications" on your device.
