A different partitioning for Actions ATM7029 devices

25297 Views 28 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  elementar
Here you can download the FW file I made for Crystal II: http://yadi.sk/d/JfLT4Rfv5oj2a
Just replace the original FW file when upgrading using Actions Tablet product tool...
(be aware that you have to use FLASH_ERASE option, and it will wipe your internal memory)

The partitioning is taken from the most recent Hero II.
2 GB for data / 512 MB for system

Before:

cat /proc/partitions

179 1 15519712 mmcblk0p1

ps: as always, the risk is all yours...

edit: made for firmware 2013-03-22 and earlier, don't know how well this works in newer versions...

I was about to make versions for 2013.05.07 and 4.2.2 beta but made a Windows patcher instead...
The fw-files are very similar, so the patcher should/might be able to "fix" the fw-files of other devices too.
(It's created with dUP2 patch generator so some virus programs can give false alarms)

Use it and the patched files at your own risk...

Like I said... but it is clean, as far as I know anyway...

Sorry, but i think you don't understand my problem. I have a chines firmware, which consists of 4 files : *.fw and system.img, misc.img and rec.img. When i install this firmware, my partition /system/ has 512 Mb.

I can mount and repack system.img by simg2img application. When I repack system.img, I can specify the partition size. When I specify 512 Mb, all is ok. When I specify 1 Gb, it's fail.

I know, that partitions size are specify in .fw file. I realy need to increase system partition to 1-2 Gb, and decrease sd card (now it's size 5 Gb). Please, help me to chenge .fw file

Can someone please help me my giving me some very easy to follow, step=by-step instructions as I'm getting lost. I think this is due to starting at one forum posting and it mentioning things that need to be done which point to other forums or don't have clear instructions.

What I want to achieve is to put CyanogenMod 10.1.2 from this post onto my tablet so it's got no Chinese junk and is a nice clean Android experience.

The story so far...

I've got my Hero II tablet.
I've installed CXZ's smaller size package as shown here by copying it to the SD card and flashed it the recovery mode.
Then I go to the above thread for CM 10.1.2 and it talks about having the correct partition sizes which brings me to this thread.
I followed the instructions in the above quote, but where it says:
6.u can verify by the button "patch ok".
I don't actually see a button but the dialogue box in the Patcher Tool says "Patched OK" as shown in this screenshot.
As for the next instruction line which reads:
7.now flash the firmware using 3 .img files along with this and finsh..
This is where I get lost.
Do I use the Actions Firmware Update tool shown here? If so, what do I select and what files do I put where? Post #1 in this thread says I have to have "Flash_Erase" selected but that's all I know.

So that's where I'm at. Any help would be greatfully appreciated as I'm looking forward to using my tablet.

yes from here u have to use actions tablet tool to flash firmware ..
1.browse for .fw file
2.load .img files rec,misc and system .
3.if ur tab is on then its ok and press green download button if its off press power and volume + buttom simultaniously and wait for download button to turn green and here u go..
4.make sure to check flash erase
I already try this. It's help me increase /data partition to 2 Gb, but I need to increase /system partition. How do this patch works?
The patch replaces the mbr file with the one taken from the last hero 2 firmware.
The problem is that everything in .fw file in encrypted so modifying it is difficult.

Why you need to increase /system partition that much?
It might be possible to do it by swapping partitions in boot.img?
Just a thought, haven't tried it...

Thanks. Could I just clarify a few things:

1.browse for .fw file
This will be the jellybean_atm7029_ainol_novo719_130322_2GB_data_[cxz].fw file after it's been downloaded and the patch tool has been run against it - correct?

2. load .img files rec, misc and system.
Ok, so I've downloaded the CM 10.1.2 Zip file from here and I've extracted it.

REC File - The post where you download CM 10.1.2 says

Update your recovery version to the new one before flashing this ROM. It can be found HERE.
and points to this post where I've downloaded the "smaller package size" zip file called bnmguy's_CWM_b ased_recovery_ v6.0.3.3_for_A TM7029_[cxz].z ip.

I extract that and point the Firmware Update Tool's recovery section to it's recovery.img file - correct.

I think the fact that it says to update the recovery version before flashing this ROM is throwing me as we seem to be doing it all at the same time.

MISC File Where do I find this file?
SYSTEM File Where do I find this file?

Thanks in advance. I mentioned in a previous post that I think it just gets a little confusing when you start at one post/thread, eg the CM10.1.2, and then it points to a couple of other threads (eg recovery and partition size) and these may sometimes then have links to other threads and you start getting confused about which files are used at what point and in what order etc.

Sorry for being such a newbie

a nice clean Android experience? Maybe so... but you have a Hero 2 so no patching is needed.

First go to the settings - > about tablet, version should be 4.2.2, if not go to this thread and grab
the correct version, V1 or V2 (about tablet-build number): http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/52722-ainol-actions-7029-roms/

Then...
  1. Flash it using the PAD product tool
  2. Flash the CWM zip in recovery mode
  3. Flash CM and gapps using CWM...
  4. Flash Samsung boot fix if you have a V2

misc.img and system.img would be found in the extracted zip folder of ur rom once u load .fw file u just have to click on the image button on the tablet product tool and choose right img file according to system and recovery partition..

Ok. I've got 2 replies - 1 from CXZ and another from Mehroz which points to a post from CXZ (ie post # 15) so I figured I'll just follow the last reply.

I successfully did step 9 as shown by this screenshot. You can even see I extracted the 4.2.2 beta files to a "Step 6" directory so I could keep track of where everything was (as I've downloaded so many different files over the past few days
)

I had already done steps 10 and 11 from a previous attempt (I confirmed the file mentioned in step 10 was what I had)

Unfortunately when I try to go into recovery mode (or even just do a reboot) the screen is garbled - I am not sure how to explain it but here is a photo of it during the normal splash screen.

I was able to read the screen enough in recovery mode to do step 13 and then I did a reboot but I still had the same problem.

I thought that since I was able to read the screen enough (basically the line you have navigated to reads ok, the rest are fuzzy), that I would install the CM10.1.2 file as per steps 14 to 17 (I wasn't going to worry about Gapps just yet) but after a reboot, still have the fuzzy screen. Here is a photo of the screen where I selected the CM Zip file

So before I go any further, does anyone know why my screen has gone like that?

Thanks again guys for all your help, as I would be lost without it.

request CXZ for the link of 4.2.2 compatibility zip...
No need for that, he has a Hero 2, so he has just flash a 4.2.2 of Hero 2 first.
The boot logo is broken because of the .fw file used is wrong...
Ok, when I first read this I thought "Wow, I thought I followed the instructions carefully, but obviously I made a mistake." and honestly thought I had made the mistake. So I deleted every file related to updating this tablet and started again, once again, using the link to this post as provided by Mehroz, because, as I said in my previous post, it was also written by CXZ so I figured either one is fine.

I downloaded every file again and patched the FW (called jellybean_atm7029_ainol_novo719_130507.fw) from step one.

I downloaded the 4.2.2 beta file which contained 4 files - "jellybean_atm7029_ainol_novo719_130620.fw", "misc.img", "rec.img" and "system.img" - and made sure I used these 3 IMG files.

I used the PAD Product Tool and used the patched FW file (ie the one that ends in 130507) and once again, after a successful update, my screen is still stuffed. If you look at the screenshot in my previous post where I had shown the steps I had taken, it also shows that I used the "130507" firmware file.

So where you wrote "The boot logo is broken because of the .fw file used is wrong... " could mean 2 things:

  1. I stuffed up and didn't follow the instructions properly and selected the wrong file; or
  2. The post that was suggested I follow is either out-of-date or wrong for my tablet.

Since I've re-done it and the result is the same, I assume now that your response is in relation to the second point. I wish you had said that more clearly as I'm the newbie here and assume that what I'm told to do is the right thing and that if anything goes wrong, it will be because of my (lack of) ability/understanding.

So, since there were 2 responses to my original question and following the 2nd one seems to be wrong, I'll try the other response now.

I'll let you know how I go.

Well, this is a Crystal 2 forum so you got some instructions for it. You could continue its guide and
it might even work to some point, but better to use .fw file that is for Hero 2 (the other response).

Anything can go wrong even when the instructions are correct...

I've just finished doing "the other response" and just going through the "Welcome" screens on my first boot.

Thanks for all your help. It was greatly appreciated.
