I have several devices, all which are portable, all which can use WiFi, but none are GPRS/3G.So, I bought a MiFi (or HUAWEI e5830 for the real name) which gives you a mobile hotspot for 5 or more WiFi capable devices thought a 3G connection. http://www.trustedreviews.com/peripherals/review/2009/10/07/3-MiFi-Huawei-E5830/p1I picked mine up from EBay, of course, for 65GBP a couple of months ago. I used it for my laptop, iPod Touch and now my Eken. Its basically a portable 3G Wireless Router with firewall etc. that can run for several hours on battery and is 10x5x1 cm in size, fitting nicely in your pocket. I have a 3G subscription in DK where I live, and when in UK I use a 3 PAYG Broadband SIM for between 5 and 15 GBP per 30 days.A Generic firmware upgrade gives you much more functionality than the 3 firmware that comes with it (free download), and indeed some EBay sellers do this for you
You can, of course, then turn your 120GBP iPod Touch into an iPhone (minus the GPS) by using either SIP or Skype and a headset for the calls. Not to mention your Eken.

I recently picked up a mifi unit, the same one from 3. My problem with it is I cannot get my Eken to connect to the net through it... It picks up and connects to the Wifi but fails to connect to any web sites. Its real frustrating, my win mo fone has no issues neither does my laptop but my girlfriends HTC legend has the same issue. I've tried various things such as specifying an ip gateway and dns servers all to no avail. If anybody knows the resolution to this please let me know but until its sorted the mifi mey=thod may not be the easiest way to get 3g on the Eken.

I upgraded my MiFi firmware to the Netvigator Firmware which fixes many bugs in the 3 firmware, and opens up lots more features. My Eken, iPod, Nokia E71, Asus EEE 1005 and my Sony Mylo all work perfectly. Here is the link: http://www.netvigatoreverywhere.com/download/E5838Update_716.11.17.07.108SP02.exeBE CAREFUL! This is a firmware update and is not really for novices. You will need to use the 3 software to maintain the APNs.

That was possibly the scariest firmware upgrade I have done though. I thought I may have bricked it but it turned out good after a hard reset. Now this is 3G the easy way.

of course the new Froyo build of android includes this wifi hotspot action by default. I gather it works in a similar way to the MiFi. This feature alone has sold me on an android for my next phone (when contract runs out), so the eken will be a great way to tinker with the OS before then

I also have Joikuspot on my E71. It works great on my Eken, but encryption is limited, and it really eats the phones battery. I believe it works on many of the other newer Symbian phones.

Android does not recognise ad-hoc network connections, which is what Joiku provides?

Oops. You are indeed correct. I manually added the SSID and thought it was connected. It was simply reverting back to my MiFi..... ::)Next time I will read the status properly. Thats what you get for trying to do several things at once... :-[
I have Wifi Tether on my Droid. for some reason this device will NOT connect to it. Wifi Mnager says it can't connect to this type of device. My suspicion is that it's because it won't support peer to peer
I too am very disappointed with not being able to tether my 001 with my G1. I have a rooted G1 and I can tether everything in my house and friends if need be when outside but my new 001 doesn't even see the G1, makes me so sad. If anyone gets a fix PLEASE LET ME KNOW!! Thank you.
