I joined a discussion here on SD on the new Visture V97. At the end the discussion shifted to what SOC currently available could handle Retina properly. The RK3188 & the new Exynos 4412 look to be both lacking.

Is this the answer for China Tabs. SmartQ looks to be the first coming with it?

Opinions ....info ....articles, please. This may be the next big step.

What do you think?

If it can handle the Nexus 10's 2560*1600 display, don't really see why it won't be able to handle 2048*1536.

SmartQ generally has better builds than most China Tabs. This could be something to wait for. Is there any time table for there release?

I would prefer a 8-9 inch tablet with this chipset. I have played with the Lenovo 9 inch and i love that frame.

I am with you on the frame/format/size.

Not the 5520, but I just looked at e-mail ..and I have a Ramos W42 (4412) on the way from Lightake. The 9.4" 16x10 is going to interesting after so much time on an iPad.

Excited! Posted Image

Would love to Ramos or Pipo to throw this into a 9.4 inch tablet.

Ramos may yet, especially since it looks as if they might be the actual first player to go with the 5520 in the X1.

Pipo? They will probably stay with the 3188 for the foreseeable future.

On paper the 3188 looks fantastic, and it is an excellent chip ..

Still, reports are it really does not compete with the 4412 in real world use, much less this newer version of Exynos.

I am convinced, looking at benchmark tests of the nexus 10, that the exynos 4412 and exynos 5250 are comparable as far as performance.
I am also looking forward to the first chinatab with the exynos 5250, or 5210, but do not expect much advantage.
On order, nothing.
Favorites, in order of use, Ramos W42, Ployer Momo11 quad exynos 4412, Chuwi V88 RK3188, Samsung galaxy tab 7.7, PiPo M8pro RK3188, Ployer Momo8 IPS, Yuandao Window N70, BB playbook.
Sold last months, PiPo U1, Teclast P85, PiPo S2, Teclast P85HD, Cube mini U30GT, Yuandao Vido N80IPS, Ainol Novo 10 Hero ii: very bad, Ployer Momo12, Onda V812, Yuandao Vido N80 RK3188, Teclast P88, Nexus 7-8Gb for €150, buying in a few months a new model with snapdragon 600? for the same price.

And: You know we all became mathematicians for the same reason: we were lazy.

I don't think retina screens are a big improvement in small screen devices over IPS with decent resolution. Going up after 1280X1024 or 1280X800, I don't think you can see a big difference. Maybe I have bad eyes or maybe retina screens are just a marketing trick first introduced by Apple.

Retina screens will also introduce a much worse battery life. In small portable devices, I think better battery life is more important than retina or 4k resolutions.

As for powerful CPUS, I think the upcoming Omap 5 might be interesting, too.

As far as chinese tablets go, it would be nice to see a cheap cortex A15 dual core CPU with Mali T604MP4 or SGX544 MP4. Maybe Allwinner or Rockchip or Telechips or Via or Infotmic will release such a thing.

Dual cores can be useful for multitasking, quad cores only consume more electricity and won't be better than dual cores since no Android apps are optimized for multithreading.

In what benchmarks have Exynos 4412 and Exynos 5250 comparable performance? In all benchmarks I've seen, Exynos 5 is much faster than Exynos 4.

I dunno about you but to me there's a discernable difference between 1600*1200 and 2048*1536 on a 9.7" display (Cube U9GTV has a normal mode 1600*1200 and HD mode 2048*1536). The difference isn't obvious but it's definitely there particularly when you read a lot of fine print. Really small text is sharper on 2048*1536 while it's blurry (sometimes verging unreadable without zooming) on 1600*1200.

This is one thing I appreciated with Apple when they released the iPad 3. They beefed up the battery in order to maintain battery life. Retina doesn't have to automatically translate to poor battery life and the newer Chinese retina tables are starting to feature bigger batteries. Really, it's all about priorities. I'm okay not having a 12-hour screen on time it it means I get a super sharp display. Most folks are probably fine with lower resolution in exchange for longer battery life. The nice thing here is that unlike Apple, there are plenty of options to choose from so you can find a device that more or less matches up with your requirements.

Particularly in the GPU department. Also, it should be noted that the Nexus 10 has 2560*1600 pixels to push. Not really fair to compare some benchmarks directly with a device that only has a 1280*800 resolution.

This is something I am closely watching. Quad-core just seems like it was pushed out the door to early. Not enough support for it with apps. Would like to see Rockchip and others show some A15 love.

You look to the wrong benchmarks. Take a look here: http://gfxbench.com/result.jsp

In both GlBenchmark 2.7 T-Rex HD offscreen and GlBenchmark 2.5 Egypt HD ofscreen, Mali T604 in Exynos 5 has more than double the framerates of Mali 400 in Exynos 4.

So no, Exynos 4 and Exynos 5 aren't comparable both in terms of CPU ipc and GPU performance.

Pretty sure I read a report the screen was a bit sub-par on the Freelander.

I am looking for these to pop up in the 7.9-9.4 screen size. Not a necessity but a want.
