I just discovered these android mini pc things today and I am highly intrigued. I have been looking for a small computer to play around with for a long time and I was thinking about a chromebox but for $50, I think I know which direction I want to go in.

Of course these not-well-known Chinese companies making these things end up with very hit or miss products. Some android products they make are shockingly amazing and some are barley functioning garbage. After some looking around, this model keeps popping up as the most reliable and overall best android pc on a stick. Is that the case? Are there better ones for around the same price?

If I want to get an android mini pc, which one should I get?

I have mk808 and so far do not have any complaints or regrets, you can now get it for under a $50 and it can do pretty much anything you want it to do.
What I will advice you though is to stay away from the combo deals, as most of the users (including myself) are having a lot of issues with RC12, it is better to buy a controller separately.
And like with any other Chinese product, please make sure you buy from a reputed seller to avoid fakes and colones.

The one concern that I do have is if I search a site like Amazon for Mk808, I get different product results. It is hard to tell if some of those are real and some are piggybacking on the product number. Here is the one that seems legit to me. But is it the correct one?

I have never bought any electronics from Amazon (mainly because they don't ship anything good to Canada but that's a different story) however from the looks of it, I do believe it is legit (plus the seller seems to have good rep at Amazon)
I was checking my seller at AE and it seems like they are now carrying a MK808b which has a Bluetooth, however I cannot say if it is an actual upgrade or a clone.

I've bought over 20 of the MK808's because I repurpose them for embedded security systems, free movie/tv systems, and desktop/laptop replacements on the cheap (with motoroloa lapdocks)
If you want to make sure you get an ACTUAL MK808 I would suggest buying from Geekbuying on amazon. When you search for the 808's on Amazon just be sure the seller is either "Geekbuying" OR "Cozyswan"
those are the only two I've purchased from and never had a porblem that wasn't resolved. Once they sent me a european power adapter for the 808 instead of the English/american plug and immediately fixed the mistake.

I am currently developing on and for MK808/Linux on ARM so if anyone reading this topic has questions about the MK808 as far as what it can and cannot do in Android and Linux please feel free to reply to this post with your questions. Please no Private Messages because I would like anyone else stumbling upon this topic to see my answers if they have same question.
