I have seen two A31 tablets and clock speeds were 1.2 & 1.3 GHz. I expect many to be 1.3 GHz for A31. RK3188 says 1.8 GHz but I need to see some actual tablets to see if they will clock that high.

Cortex A7 @ 40nm supports top speed of 1.5 GHz. Though with quads, they usually drop 200 MHz off the speed to decrease heat. ie. 1.3 GHz for quad.

Cortex A9 @ 40nm, top speed of 1.5 GHz. Though RK3066 was still working well at 1.6 GHz. ie. going past spec.

Cortex A9 @ 28nm supports top speed of 2 GHz. With quad, drop 200 MHz & max would be 1.8 GHz but could go as low as 1.6 GHz.


Also, the bigger L1 cache should help out a little too. L2 cache appears to be 1 MB for all of them. Though L1 cache cannot compete against higher clock speeds & Cortex A9 architecture which will give more CPU computing power to RK3188. But how RK3188 will do in 3D gaming performance is another matter. ie. CPU performance is one thing and GPU performance is another.

Looks like I guessed right about RK3188 w/Mali400-MP4! =)

We still have to see GLBenchmark tests to figure out which chip has the better GPU performance and what the difference is between them. Gaming tests will tell us for sure which is the better quad core chip to buy.

PS, which tablet has A31 @ 1.6 GHz?

Edit: I read the whole story and saw nothing to prove that RK3188 is using Mali400-MP4. I believe the author maybe guessing from what I could tell.

GPU is as expected kind of powerful. CPU is kind of underwhelming. But there is a comment on the Facebook Page of Pandawill that says there is a antutu score of 15000 from a tablet with A31. That would be almost the same score of my Galaxy Note 10.1.

OK. 1.6 GHz quad Cortex A7 is really pushing the limit. Maybe stable or maybe not. Hard to say. 1.3 GHz would be stable and likely 1.4 GHz too. Higher speeds than those could start getting unstable.

Antutu 3 results do not seem that great compared to my N80 (RK3066 w/Mali400MP4 @ 266 MHz).

I included SD write because very big difference in that one test between the two tablets. I also prefer way more GLBenchmark over Antutu for 3D GPU benches because much more thorough test. But, let's say Antutu has the 2D & 3D right, then A31 is only slightly better than RK3066 overall.

Both tablets are both 1024x768 making sure resolution does not affect final results.

RK3188 will very likely come out with Mali400MP4 @ 400 MHz or "maybe" better GPU. That means, even better scores for GPU + CPU in Antutu than my N80 above.

OK. I changed V812 from 1.3 GHz to 1.0 GHz in my previous post. I had read that V812 was coming with 1.3 GHz but that link says only 1.0 GHz clock speed.

1.0 GHz is too low. 1.3 GHz would have been good. Looks like A31 may have heat issues to only clock at 1 GHz. It now seems like RK3188 maybe the better ARM chip to go with though still waiting for some testing to be sure.

I also was hoping V812 would come out with 1.3 GHz clock speed. At 1.0 GHz, it is only slightly better than RK3066. ie. not worth the upgrade.

Hmmm, CPU performance not good, i hope it will be twice much better than my Ainol Novo7 Aurora 2 (Amlogic 8726-MX).

The A31 (@ 1 GHz) compared to RK3066 (@ 1.6 GHz) has very strong SD write & 3D. Good 2D. Same FPU performance. Slightly higher integer performance. But the A31 is running at only 1 GHz compared to 1.6 GHz for RK3066. Get A31's clock up to 1.5 GHz and then see what happens. =) Also, the ATM7029 tablet is running at 1.5 GHz. So, ATM7029 gets 500 MHz more per CPU core. ie. potential for 2 GHz more

I can finally say that I am unimpressed with ATM7029 and will avoid that chip for sure!!!! It offers strong CPU but very weak GPU because went with Vivante GC1000 according to Mc-Bub site & the benchmark testing proves not Mali400MP4 either. Scores are low in Antutu 2D & 3D and Vellamo too.

For Hi10p, which many of us will not do, you may need strong CPU performance. I cannot say if that will help or not since the video is decoded by the VPU. A better VPU would certainly help though.


PS, A31 kicked 8726-MX's butt in terms of 3D performance (4678 vs 2519) and even did better in 2D too (1087 vs 702). ie. stronger GPU results should give much better FPS for 3D & 2D gaming with A31. It even outperforms RK3066 on the 3D side but not on the 2D.

I also want to see RK3188 review too. But also, A31 @ 1.3-1.5 GHz because 1 GHz was way too low to compare against. Cortex A7 quad should run stable at 1.3 GHz. Only reason to run it at 1 GHz is if AllWinner chip design is not good and has heat issues. Hoping that is not the case.

OK. Let us know the real CPU clock speeds.

A31 tablets are saying 1.3/1.4 GHz speed but Antutu is showing 1 GHz instead. ATM7029 is saying 1.5 GHz but Antutu is showing 1.2 GHz.

In the past, AllWinner would say 1.5 GHz for their A10 when in fact it shipped only at 1 GHz. 1.5 GHz was the maximum speed A8 chip could reach but A10 ran too unstable at that speed. So, most A10s shipped at 1 GHz and some even at 1.2 GHz.

In other words, I believe A31 tablets are clocked at 1 GHz & ATM7029 at 1.2 GHz.

My N80 is 1.6 GHz and shows up as 1608 MHz in Antutu. There are no differences between stated and actual clock speeds.

Oke Nickos, I think you are right about the allwinner A10. Though I owned never a device with this chip, I also allways read as you are saying.
Concerning the ATM7029, I must say the antutu benchmark on this Chinese site, ainol forum, is showing 1500 MHz(×4) and a score 14456.
This test is more than the 12423 antutu score in the Mac bub blog review.

Comparing this with my momo12 and P88, antutu benchmark is listing 1602 MHz(×4) for momo12, and 1512 MHz(×2) for the teclast P88 and they both score about 11400 and 11600. The higher clocked momo12 slightly better.

I will see and post my experience next Monday, they both arrived in Europe, (Amsterdam and Leipzig)

Yes, alot of people looking for Gaming performance, but some people like me (and some of my anime fans friend), looking CPU performance for playing Anime 10bit (Hi10p).
About Hi10p, the only SoC that have good performance is Tegra3 overclocked to 1,5Ghz, i read this in XDA Forum, but Tegra3 is expensive, so not for me.

About A31, i have read your post.

Now looking forward for RK3188, if this much better than Actions Semi or much better than Tegra3...
A31 with 1,3Ghz perhaps not much better for playing Hi10p, but i don't know if no one test it.

Though I can tell they have an issue with 40nm too. In theory, 40nm should work to 1.5 GHz for dual & 1.3 GHz for quad. So why does AllWinner only use 1 GHz speed for A31??? Because chip design maybe not that great. I heard the A31 starts getting unstable above 1 GHz clock speeds. Unfortunate because A31 chip had potential to be really great and now will only be slightly better than RK3066. ie. minor upgrade (in GPU) going from RK3066 to A31 but likely a large downgrade on CPU side because many apps only dual threaded.

The Arm A7 cores are a 8 stage pipeline, this is fairly short compared to the A9 which is between 8 and 11 allowing a higher clock speed. The A7 is designed entirely to save power, yet in this instance is a complete let down as most owners are reporting higher power use than many competing A9 chips like the Amlogic or Rockchip dual core variants that perform similar at lower power. Unless drivers get better with time, and power saving noteably improves I think I'll avoid the A31 for now. Shame I was hoping for this device to replace my Aurora 2 but its just not an upgrade without a noticably longer battery life.
