This is by far the only 7" Tablet manufactured by Smart Devices that can compete directly to Google Nexus 7. We all know Ainol Novo7 Fire/Flame did try to battle head to head to Google Nexus 7 but the latter is just awesome enough to defeat the Novo7 Fire very easily. Now, it is the dawn of the new SmartQ X7 Tablet. A 7" Tablet that is built with TI-OMAP 4470 chipset which is a 1.5GHz DualCore Cortex A9 processor with also a famous Imagination Tech PowerVR SGX544 graphics.

The Texas Instrument OMAP 4470 Chipset is a very popular Cortex A9 Chipset for many of available smartphones until today because of its exceptional performance in both graphics and processor while keeping a great power efficiency. Plus, SmartQ put a stunning 2GB of Low Power DDR2 RAM that will surely makes everything operate smoothly even a resource hog application is running on the background.

SmartQ X7 comes with two different variant, the X7 and X7 Lite which has only 1GB of LPDDR2 RAM. Both have 16GB of Storage but only the X7 is available so far at an Online Store based in Shenzhen China for US$269.99 including a world-wide free shipping. That's similar to Google Nexus 7 with 32GB of storage + a US$20.00 shipping if its not available in your country.

SmartQ X7 Screen is comparable to Google Nexus 7's Screen, it has same HD-720p resolution (1280x800pixel) and is also using the popular IPS Technology which gives the users not only a vivid and very colorful image but also a wider viewing angle compared to ordinary or MVA Screen. SmartQ is very strict when it comes to quality so we should be expecting a decent quality screen with minimal to no backlight bleeding. A 2.0MP Front Facing Camera is placed in the middle-top of the SmartQ X7's slim screen bezel. Good for Video Calls or just Capturing self photos and upload to social media apps like Facebook and Twitter.

Most probably, this will be the biggest advantage of SmartQ X7 over Google Nexus 7. The complete set of casual user Interface Ports like mini-HDMI out, micro-USB port with OTG function, and the most important of all, a microSD-Slot for storage expansion. A 3.5mm Headphone/Earphone port and a standard 2.5mm Wall Charger port is also available. All located at one side of the Tablet which only measures about 9.5mm in thickness, a 1mm thinner that Google Nexus 7. The edges of the SmartQ X7 is also very sleek and elegant, almost better looking than the Nexus 7.

Other things like having a 2.0MP Rear Facing Camera, a latest Bluetooth 3.0 EDR, an offline GPS navigation and a huge 4200mAh Battery Capacity (125mAh lesser than Nexus 7) also makes the SmartQ X7 almost better than Google Nexus 7 if not, maybe a decent competitor to it. If SmartQ made this Tablet very power efficient just like the Nexus 7 do, it could provide 8~9 hours of continuous Internet Browsing or Movie Playback. WiFi Connectivity on SmartQ Tablets seems to have minimal to no problem at all. The only CONS I am seeing right now is that SmartQ X7 doesn't have a Stereo Speaker, instead it has a mono-firing loudspeaker and we hope it can provide good quality of sounds.

Overall, if Google Nexus 7 lack of Interface Port and a Storage Expansion worries you, SmartQ X7 is the best alternative to buy. Performance would be a little bit lesser than Nexus 7's Nvidia Tegra 3 QuadCore Chipset but it should be way better than other DualCore Cortex A9 chipset that most China MID brands are using, like Rockchip RK3066 and AMLogic 8726-M6 Chipsets. It comes with Android 4.1.2 JellyBean OS with Google PlayStore pre-installed.

ivanz,

Thanks for your report on the SmartQ X7.

I have just ordered my X7 from Hotmid at USD 249/- having sold my current device, a Novo 7 Flame, as usual, to one of my club members.
Hopefully the X7 will arrive next week and at some stage I will submit a user report to Slatedroid.

My short term interest will be to look at a possible firmware upgrade to Jelly Bean 4.2.

More later.

Would be great if you could give a review of the tablet, hard to find any reviews of it online. Tempted to get this or the Pipo U1 Pro (http://www.slatedroi...updated-u1-pro/). Looking for a 7 inch tab with 1280x800 IPS screen, HDMI and SD card slot.

Hi CoOkIe MoNsTeR,

My X7 shipped yesterday (Friday) for delivery by EMS, so it should arrive next week if there is no Customs delay in Madrid.

I will then do my usual tests over the first 2 days and submit a review here.

Hi All,

My X7 is still "somewhere around" ... I have no idea of its location as the tracking number (EMS) is not giving any info at all.
I have contacted HotMid for an update.

More later,
ScottyJavea

PS: There are user reviews at TabletRepublic.

Hi All,

My SmartQ X7 has arrived .. took longer than normal as factory-to-shipper was 7 days.

So far I am pleased with the device BUT I had to install a different firmware as the Play Store access was limited.
I used COMod 0.1 which installed perfectly and also got rid of the Chinese stuff.

1. The screen is superb with excellent sensitivity and I am using it at 50% brightness indoors.
2. The advertised weight is correct.
3. The matte black (non-slip?) back feels odd but OK.
4. Build quality looks and feels good .. no loose bits or squeaks.
5. WiFi does not seem as good as my previous SmartQ Q8 but acceptable.
6. GPS is working but not fully tested ... it showed my device location as being in my house (almost to my living room)
7. I've fitted a matte, anti-glare screen protector for use outside which has no negative effect on the screen swiping.
8. Connection to my HD TV HDMI port was excellent and dual-screen.
9. Cameras and video work fine allowing for 2 Mp each.
10. Skype will be tested shortly.
11. Battery so far: On standby from 0930 - 1230 lost 2% today
11. My usual SPD 3D Shell launcher works a treat.
12. I am testing various browsers and e-mail apps at the moment ... more later.

Other: RAM available: 1.66 GB
Int Storage: 14.25 GB free
CPU: Was set at 396 MHz - 800 MHz (now testing at 396 MHz - 1.5 GHz)

Other stuff: Assets purging not tested
16bit transparency not tested.
Surface improvement not tested.

Overall: So far: Worth the cost when compared to more expensive, lesser spec branded devices.

Dear All,

I have received a reply from SmartDevices (Sherry, Sales Dept) and she tells me that they are working on Android Jelly Bean 4.2 which should be released "shortly" and for me to keep in touch via their website.

REF: X7 battery test and exFAT

I did as someone advised and now have the 13 GB 1080p Avatar movie on my extSD using exFAT (previously it was FAT32 which has a 4GB limit)

Now, I am using this movie, an mkv file, as my benchmark, but so far I have only found TWO players that can run this movie with sound.
I will shortly run this movie as a further battery test.

Today's battery test ran a 2 hour movie 3 times with 7% of battery left BUT the system dropped the screen brightness even further at the 30% battery level ???
(At the start of the test the WiFi was OFF and the screen brightness set at 50%)

I am now using the free Nova launcher which is working very well and I will possibly pay for the full version.

More later,

Dear All,

I have been doing a X7 battery standby test over the last 5 days, as follows:-

Note 1: I have renamed "Phone.apk" and "TelephonyProvider.apk" adding "old" to each one.
Note 2: In Settings / Battery your "Tablet Idle" should be around 97% and "Screen" around 2%.
Nothing else should be listed in the Battery Usage.

Day 5 of X7 idle test.
4 days and 18 hours and 46 minutes
Battery usage at 31%

Conditions:
WiFi OFF
GPS OFF
E-mails and odd browsing only.

This is the completion of my standby testing as :
1) I do not like to go below 30% on lithium-ion batteries, and
2) The X7 switches to low-power screen mode at 30% (Why ?, I do not know or how to stop this )

I will now switch to my normal usage, i.e., with WiFi and GPS on all the time.
Note that when in this usage mode and I am on my house recliner the power supply is on all the time.
The non-power supply mode is usually when I am out-and-about or at my computer club.

A further note is that I am using a Custom ROM.

Good Luck,
ScottyJavea

this is a manufacturer defined specs which is usually coded into their firmware...

Hi ivanz,

Thanks for your swift reply.

So, with my Custom ROM, could the designer of this change the setting ? OR perhaps it is more "hard-wired" by SmartDesign.

ScottyJavea

PS: It is not a problematic item, more of a curiosity.
