You won't have any trouble installing custom roms if you use the team DRH CWM v6 as it uses touchscreen controls. The cap keys won't work anyway as it's a g-tablet based recovery.

Is there a chance it's a physical connection that's come loose? I've not looked inside my tablet but I'd guess the cap keys have a separate connection to the motherboard.

It depends on what you expect.

Nowadays 4.x tablets are often without any physical buttons (let's consider hannspad touch buttons are 'physicals' :D), so a ROM 4.x is usable without.

Now, 4.x isn't as comfortable as previous versions: features (generally: no hdmi, hdmi without sound, no microphone), sometimes speed or responsiveness.
Hannspad SN10T1 1653 - totally fond of SOD !
LG Optimus 4X HD P880 - bootloader locked !
Galaxy S i9000 - running CM10.1 with ease !

Ok. In all cases, sticking to TeamDRH CWM 5.5.0.4 or 6.0.1.1 is not impacting stock rom in any ways: CWMs (or stock recoveries) are similar to an usb stick or a cd you use to boot on your computer: a light system, running totally isolated from normal OS.
