I'm trying to make the tablet recognize a 3G dongle (ZTE MF190) without luck.
I've already unlocked the dongle (also removed the cdrun boot) and it gives flashing green light while connected to the tablet, but apart this I have no 3G signal, no APN, nothing (I've disabled the WIFI connection).

I'm running the beta 4.0.4 Android firmware, so maybe it's due to USB dongles/3G keys drivers missing (really dunno).

Anybody out there who managed to have a 3G USB dongle working on the Zenithink C97 with 4.0.4 beta firmware?

Thanks

Cheers

Try to post the result of lsusb (you may need root permissions I guess)

I'll get the app "USB Host Viewer" once at home and post the results.

Or do u mean that I can use the lsusb command in Android too? If yes, how? :)

Thanks

For on adb shell of terminal emulator. But you may need root permissions.
I'd like to see usb vid and pid becaus, maybe you'll have to use usb_modeswitch

according to pid it looks like it's already switched. just a stupid thing (it's an option present only on stock amlogic's firmware), do you have "hw.nophone=false" in build.prop?
it the rild running? (ps | grep rild)
try to post logcat to see what happens when you insert your dongle

Hi Christian,

I used the dmesg command with the MF190 dongle plugged and this is what I have (leaving the rest):

<6>[ 5969.922912] option 2-1:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
<6>[ 5969.946369] usb 2-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0
<4>[ 5969.951066] Skip device
<6>[ 5969.952791] option 2-1:1.1: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
<6>[ 5969.967406] usb 2-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1
<4>[ 5969.976292] Skip device
<6>[ 5969.976364] option 2-1:1.2: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
<6>[ 5969.996949] usb 2-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB2

The dongle is indeed connected, the light is flashing green. With wifi disabled I have no 3g signal, no network, nothing.

If I go to settings and try to create a new apn, after entering all the data and saving, I'm back to the apn empty screen, no apn is shown (I've also tried to restart the tablet).

I've read that an apk named usbdongle could make the trick, but I can't download it from the store (my device is reported as not compatible).

Please also note that I'm back to android 4.0.3, since I've installed the latest firmware from Zenithink.

Any idea?

Thank you a million

Cheers

Hi,
I've tried both logcat and rild

When I type logcat on terminal emulator, it gives back a message that a folder cannot be accessed because I don't have the rights (don't remember the exact message, sorry).

When I type the rild message, the emulator terminal didn't give back any message and becomes unresponsive (whatever command I type, I don't get any answer).

Any idea?

Thank you
kok

Did you type su first when you open the terminal and give it superuser permission?

@Omarahum
You were right. I didn't type the su ommand :)

So, those are the results after typing the two commands:

ps | grep rild

root 2276 1 7604 816 ffffffff 400d4cb4 S /system/bin/rild

----

logcat

(when plugging the 3G dongle)

09-20 22:02:56:409 W/Vold ( 2262): AddMdmDev don't find a match usb device (19d2_16) in isKnownMdmDev
09-20 22:02:56:439 W/Vold ( 2262): AddMdmDev don't find a match usb device (19d2_16) in isKnownMdmDev
09-20 22:02:56:498 W/Vold ( 2262): AddMdmDev don't find a match usb device (19d2_16) in isKnownMdmDev

So the problem seems to be that my 3G dongle modem is not in the tablet db.

I've found the /etc/usb_modeswitches.d directory and inside the various models (I think).
I've tried to create the 16d2_16 model by copying the 16d2_2000 file and then renaming it, rebooting the tablet and plugging the dongle without luck (on logcat I still have the aforementioned error message...)

Any hint?

Thnx
kok

Have you tried booting with the dongle already in? (Attach the dongle to the tablet first, then turn on your tablet, let it boot with the dongle attached...)

http://www.zenithink.com/Efaq.php

15. How to connect USB 3G dongle?
(1) Insert the 3G USB dongle, click "settings" -- "wireless& networks"
(2) Disconnect any wireless
(3) Click to turn on 3G, choose which model you want EVDO or WCDMA, save it, then shut the tablet down, then restart it.
(4) Wait until the wireless signal icon changed (about 15 seconds), until the 3G icon appear.
(5) Return to desktop, you can surf the net.

@Omarahum

I've tried it but no luck. Thank you anyway.

BUT, I managed to have the 3G dongle (ZTE MF190, formerly branded Movistar ES) working!

Below you have the steps:

1) Download the PPP Widget from the market (free)
2) Install it
3) Restart the tablet
4) Go to the widget page (you may want to place the widget on the main page)
5) The connect button was greyed for me (the automatic regognition doesn't work for my 3G dongle model)
6) Tap on Configure
7) Deactivate the auto recognize option
8) Activate the manual port selection
9) Go back to your tablet main page
10) Click on the widget icon
11) Select your dongle from the pop up window
12) Tap on connect
13) Done!

Hope it helps.

Thank you Omarahum and Christian Troy (sei un grande!) for your help! :)

Cheers

kok

This will sound dumb but I'm new here so please bear with me... How are USB devices (e.g. 3G or bluetooth dongles) meant to be physically connected to a tablet like this? Am I supposed to connect device via supplied (otg?) cable or some other means (e.g. via hub - powered or non-powered)?

The reason I ask is because I have a Huawei E1750 3G dongle and a bluetooth dongle (both known to work on my Linux workstation) and have tried a few connection methods including:

C97 -> supplied cable -> female-female adapter -> dongle
C97 -> supplied cable -> hub -> dongle
C97 -> (ordinary) micro-standard-A (male) -> female-female adapter -> dongle
C97 -> (ordinary) micro-standard-A (male) -> hub -> dongle

...but neither device shows in output of 'lsusb'.

I have tested each connection method live (i.e. with tablet already booted) and after a reboot (i.e. connect then power cycle) but no luck :(

So, is my (physical) connection method is wrong or do I have some sort of configuration issue or ?

There isn't a bluetooth driver currently in the firmware. I'm sure Zenithink or someone else will provide one eventually though.

Yeah, it would be a good idea to put which ROM you are currently using (and the tablet you are using it on) in your signature so people can know what configuration you are on while having these issues....

Guess I should add my "set up your signature" thread to this subforum also....
