Thats the good stuff - now for the not so good stuff...

Cameras front and back are what you may come to expect from such devices, quality is rather lacking.

There is backlight bleeding - particularly in the corners of the screen, but only really noticable in a low-light environment.

Sound from the headphone socket has a LOT of noise/ hissing/ interference, especially at lower volumes.

Battery seems to drain a LOT faster when in standbye than im using it (it lost about 30% in 1 hour)... maybe firmware/ ICS issue(?)

Touchscreen acts strange when charging eg. touching one area of the screen will sometimes activate a completely different area often opening/ closing apps while your trying to do something else, can be annoying, but this is only while charging.

Think my unit is faulty as the HDMI socket does not work at all, i have tried all settings but my TV reports 'No Signal'....

Well thats about it...

In conclusion, if you can get one without any issues then i would highly recommend it - its a good tablet for the price.

Just incase anyone is wandering - Android version = 4.0.4 - Kernel = 3.0.8+ - Build number = rk30_ics_v2.23.00....

If you have any questions i will try to answer them.

So the N101 is leaking power too when charging. :( Also, noisy speaker, sleep mode drainage and the Flash Player crash are a deal-breaker until sorted out. Oh well, maybe the Nexus 7...

The power thing is usually due to a bad quality charger and I have also found in the past from other china tablets that having the cpu set too low can also cause it. I don't know why but on my momo11 bird clone the same thing happens. If I set the min cpu to say 400 and hte max to 1152 it doesn't do it.

Hi,
currently no issues with my N101. Except the charger. The good news:no irregular behaviour if charger is plugged in. The bad news: the Tablet charges very slow. After 2h battery shows only 30%...
At the moment I am installing a couple of apps that I usually work with. It takes a lot of time to setup all those apps.

Only real issue I currently have: facebook app complains that it is not compatible.

Regards, Udo

Hi,

still testing. Very few apps are not compatible out of the box. Why Facebook is one of them? I am unable to understand. What exotic feature does Facebook use that it should be not compatible?

I have installed about 90 apps on the tablet so far - few for testing/benchmarking - most because i want to use them. A couple of games that i did not really have tested.

The internal memory with less than 1/2 GByte is way to small. I haven't found the option for default installation of apps to sd card instead of internal memory and had to move all possible apps manually to the 32 GB external storage... Does not work for google apps and some others :-(

Everything that is important for me works fine. Tapatalk, K9 Mail, Googlemail, ###########, paypal, Youtube (very nice on tablet), Google reader. No problem at all.

I did a few benchmarks. Thanks to the internal JIT-Compiler the results vary a lot. First run of a benchmark generally is much slower than 2nd or 3rd run. E.G. Quadrant. First run gave under 3000. 3rd run nearly 4000 score.

Antutu benchmark is more stable:
2nd run (i forgot to write down 1st run results)
Total Score: 7137

3rd run
Total Score: 7297
CPU: 3968
RAM: 1230
GPU: 1414
I/O: 685

I/O is weak on my firmware version too (compared with U30GT). But the values are acceptable. There should be some room for improvement with newer firmware versions. But at the moment the N101 beats e.g. the following competitors:

HP Touchpad, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Kindle Fire, Motorola Xoom, Acer Iconia Tab A500. Performance should be no issue in the next few months.

Tuen's forum is laggy here in germany again (whereas everything else in the web runs smooth). So i have problems comparing the benchmark results with his values.

I ordered the tablet from eternal team/aliexpress with the optional leather case. The case fits perfect but has an ugly beige color. Of course as the cover is of leather - which is a little flexible - there always is a chance to hide the cameras. Bit i can insert the tablet into the case so that the camera have no obstacles in their way (except my body *g*).

Charging is still a problem. The tablet charges VERY slow. I think it should take about 5 hours to fully charge. As i currently use the tablet indoor and outdoor it is not always connected to the charge. I dangle around with 20-30% battery. But the firmware is unable to measure the battery correctly. I tried some System Info apps and they report a battery voltage of 4 milliVolts!!!. That is impossibile! Android dues not know anything about battery usage. As there is a hardware component for power management built in this should be (hopefully) just a firmware issue

Strange: The graphical display of battery usage seems to work. It shows values/graphs for Wifi and Display. If the tablet battery will hold long enough for my use i do not care too much about battery management and look forward to a better firmware.

I think i will root the tablet tomorrow as i have to check a couple of other things today.

What i am still looking for is a driver for windows 7 that enables Android SDK/Eclipse to contact the tablet. I tried the links in Tuens forum but my Windows 7 does not want to install them. Access to the system storage (the large 32G area) from windows is no problem.

Best regards, Udo

hey guys.

i'm also having some firmware problems.

the main problem (without going in to minor details) is that the whole GUI is pretty slow and buggy, and i'm getting a lot of crashes. my first thought was to re-install the firmware, but since yuandao haven't even released the first stock firmware yet, i can't re-install. it basically makes it only really useful for checking emails and reading e-books. video is a bit choppy and games crash... from what i understand, nobody else is having this problem, which is why i'd like to reinstall the original firmware.

i'm also having problems with the device installing programs on the 'internal storage' rather than the NAND flash.

i'd like to get this sorted before i do a full n101 vs u30gt review.

as a side note (because i know a lot of you are dying to know), the sound is much more acceptable on the n101 than the u30gt... comparable to that of a budget laptop, and better than your average mobile phone. the speakers are clear without being harsh or resonant, and has decent stereo separation. (tested with Reggie Watts' TED talk).

wi-fi reception is also a lot better out of the box.

any questions vs u30gt, i'd be happy to answer.

/wd

edit: although i'm having a lot of firmware problems, i don't want to shoot this down just yet, since, from what i can tell, these problems are exactly that... firmware.

Hey thanks for the initial heads up windude. So the speakers and sound in general seem much better than the cube. Lets hope you get the firmware sorted soon which I'm sure you will.

I'm sure I saw a stock firmware dump on tuen's site so maybe check there or I'm sure he will help.

Cheers
Jez

Hey windude; glad you finally got your tab, though sorry to hear about initial fw issues.

Special thanks for the sound side note! :good:

I wondered if you experienced the same noise / hiss / interference through the headphone socket as mentioned in imzo79's post above?

Is the summary of bad things about this tablet:

touchscreen wonko while charging
Headphone sound is wierd and lots of ringing and crap
Flash doesn't work in browsers
Charger itself is bad quality
A little bit of screen bleeding (anyone confirm this?)
In general firmware not as established as U30GT

Oh and I have a question about the 32GB storage. Is that 32GB internal like the iPad or is it 1Gb internal and 31Gb of nand flash somewhere else (Not Sdcard)?
Has the sound problem been fixed on the newer versions of the U30GT?

just tried headphones for the first time, and they are giving a bit of weird alien-like distortion, possibly codec problems?

i am NOT, however, experiencing any of the 'noise coming out of the speakers while silent' problem. after i close something that has sound, within half a second the speakers cut out, and i can't hear anything coming off the speakers. there is some of that 'alien-like' distortion happening during play, but when you have it playing a video, it is pretty inditsinguishable while using speakers...

... how do i explain this? the distortion does not increase when you increase the volume, so the louder you have it (when using speakers) the better... when using headphones however, the distortion is more prevalent, because you have the volume set lower in order to not make yourself deaf...
