I started considering different screen sizes for my next tablet.

I found 7" to be tad too small in size for reading & web browsing and even for gaming. 10" I believe would be somewhat big to lug around. 8" (4:3) seems like the perfect size but very few of those to choose from. Tablet makers only seem interested in building 7", 10.1" or 9.7". Many just pass on the 8".

So, now I am thinking about 10.1 or 9.7" because get better choice on tablet makers & models. 9.7 probably better but I saw a RK3066 10.1 that looked pretty good. Going to wait for the newer tablets to come out with RK3066 (or maybe 8726MX). I will buy in 1 to 6 months time.

While searching I found some very interesting info on what size people want. Seems that the difference is usually by 10-15% in favor of 10".

It's an interesting question. I really liked the 1024x600 10.2 inch 16:9 display on my zenithink zt280 although it wasnt ips the actual size & text readability of everything was great.

I have a Sanei N90 now which has a 1024x768 9.7 inch 4:3 ips display. It's great for certain things like Web browsing but I find text seems a lot smaller than on the zenithink so readability suffers. I know you can alter system font size in ICS but doing this seems to cause display problems like icons obscuring their text. I have also tried adjusting dpi but without any useful results.

Anyway, I am now eagerly awaiting the availability of RK3066 devices & I have my eyes on a Cube U30GT which has a 1280 x 800 10.1 inch 16:10 IPS display. I'm hoping this will be the perfect tablet! Just waiting to see how battery life will be.

Update: I now have the Cube U30GT & it is amazing. Fantastic display, battery life and cpu/gpu. Check out the new rk3066 forums on Slate Droid for more info.

I prefer a bigger screen on my tablet. My Scroll Extreme has a 9.7 inch screen.

I prefer to use the tablet in portrait mode as I read books and newspapers every day.

Games seem to be hard coded to run in landscape mode which is OK most of the time.

me too. i find small screen difficult. i have galaxy tab and it's hard for me to use it. the screen is too small for me. i can't even see the whole page of an ebook.

I totally agree. It is really difficult to find the right mix between big enough to see and small enough to take everywhere!

I am coming from an Archos 5IT, and I like that size for portability, but it is a little bit cramped. 7 seems too big to be considered "pocketable," are there any 6-inch devices out there??

No. Standard tablet screen sizes are: 5", 7", 8", 9.7" & 10.1". The 5" are very few. The 8" have some but not lots to choose from.

You will just have to go with 7". It is good size for "inside" jacket pocket. Too big for "outside" jacket pockets. As long as you wear a jacket with big, inside pocket you will be OK.

Personally I mostly use the tablet at home so for me the bigger the better!! Ideally even bigger than 10.1 if available lol.

For day to day use I will not use a tablet as I need phonecalls too so I just got the Sam S3 (£26 pcm) that has a big enough 4.8 screen to do whatever I need to do and also has a very very decent battery, easily lasts a day with normal usage calls/web browsing/gaming etc (not like my HTC Desire HD).

i have the kindle fire which is a 7 inch and the hp tp which is 9.7 inch i believe, the kindle fire is a bit small for me, but the tp screen is just right.

i have a samsun 7 in and find it quite readable in book pages ,some of the book apps have different size fonts

Screen size matter depend on what you want to use the Tablet mainly for.

7" (Aspect Ratio 16:9): good size for using on the move if NOT for real working, play games, looks movies
8" (Aspect Ratio 4:3): good sized for use to really works on the move and as eBook Reader, surfing Internet, a bit small for longer working
9.7" (Aspect Ratio 4:3): the best size for real working
10.x" (Aspect Ratio 16:9): best size for play games, look movies, not so good for real working, eBook reading, surfing Internet

I use both: 9.7" and 10.1" and have to say that I use 95% of the time the 9.7"

Anyway it's a personal thing and you should try different, in an Dep Store or so to find out which would fit for your own needs.

Measured a couple of books i have scanned (Albert's Biology and Stryer's Biochemistry) as well as a regular A4 sheet of paper. These are the results:

The 8" and 9.7" are the Tablets with an screen which has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and those are the best for to read eBooks.
