I'm in the process of very slowly (128kbps upload) repopulating SlateDroid's downloads for the Cruz Reader and wanted to address an issue before it comes up: No, I do NOT have any overclocked ROMs and I do NOT recommend their use in the Cruz Reader. I bricked a unit with one and after some research, immediately deleted them all. Here's why:

1. According to Samsung, the S3C6410 CPU could only be stabilized at 667MHz by increasing the current to the core by 0.1 volt. Given this fact, our CPUs had probably failed a stability test at the factory and were therefore rated as 533MHz parts. Also remember that the S3C6410 is really a SoC not merely a CPU.

2. The goal was unrealistic. Since the S3C6410 required a voltage boost to get to 667MHz, this was probably the maximum speed for that core. The 800MHz part in the WPDN (the source of the overclocking kernel) is probably a subsequent core with a reduction in the die size.

3. Any experienced overclocker (I started in 1989) should tell you that overclocking a CPU (or system) from power up is a VERY BAD IDEA! You really should only attempt this if the hardware itself has some provision to fall back to a lower speed when the boot process fails.

4. After digesting most of the content here, I came to the conclusion that 90% of bricked units were from overclocked ROMs with the remaining 10% resulting from interrupted flashing (admittedly rough estimates).

I have to agree with you about the overclock and bricked units. This unit is meant for 533mhz period.

Thanks. I think I overstated my case a bit, but I spent 2 weeks flogging myself for attempting it, when I should have known better. In my defense, mobile CPUs had seduced me into believing that such a thing was easily attainable.

I did search for a bootloader that would go to 667MHz only for awhile, but ultimately decided that the modest performance boost wouldn't be worth the risk.:nea:

I would be interested in the 667MHz version if you don't mind. If you don't want to post it, please private message me with it. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, but never found one. I did run across a couple of candidate devices (s3c6410-based @ 667MHz) but never found a downloadable ROM to go any further. Ultimately, I refocused my efforts on optimizing Andy for this platform.

Moving and pinning this topic to VM Cruz Reader Firmware / Development

@Delta-9

Thank you for taking the (painfully slow) time to mirror these files. :good: +1
