I do more messing with the novel than downloading so I never ran into a memory issue. But lots of you have commented that they are running out of memory, especially now that thousands of apps work.

I haven't check any of the main stream apps to sdcard, but others report they don't work.

So here is my own version: Should work on all black novels running Android 2.1

app2sd_patch_S64F_SHST_OP21_PD_20110616.dat
http://www.mediafire...zrr1njnv2otc19n

Rename to your normal reflash name.
OP21 SHST_OP21_PD_20110616.dat ??
OP21-15 S64N_SLST_KOBO_BB_20101104.dat ??

This is a non destructive flash/patch. The flash is small because of compession, but takes a while to copy the 500meg file.
You should uninstall all downloaded apps first to clean up databases.

Installs a 500meg apps2sd.img file in PD_Novel
Deletes /data/app (all download/installed apps are removed)
Mounts the internal sdcard to /system/media/int_sdcard (works with usb connected)
Mounts /data/app from /system/media/int_sdcard/apps2sd.img through loop

My main concern is if there is even an available 500 meg of space on the bpdn. my internal is only 2 gb. On average after I do a fresh install of android, I have about 50 mb but probably less then that to install apps. So Installin a 500 mb file won't work for me.

The Android System uses about 300megs of your 2gig flash. About 1.3gigs of your flash is available as a Vfat partition known as PD_Novel. You are probably seeing whats left in your Android System and is why you run out of space installing apps. This 500meg file is installed on the Vfat partition and you should have lots of room, unless you have loaded movies or thousands of songs and pictures.

If you have rootexplorer install, you can verify some of this. It seems to correctly report used and available.

Thanks again Terminander and, all who contribute.

I've done the 2.1 upgrade, I've done the nosoftkey patch and, now I've done this alternate to the app2sd(I've got a non-working ext3 128MB partition on my 8BG card...).

So far, very good.
As I reset and patch along, things are working better all the time. I now have a working Skype, testing if I can receive video and voice now. Installed some of my memory hogs apks and, no short memory alarms yet.

UPDATE; I have gone no farther yet in Skype, but installed 'Angry Birds' - installed - then failed to run,
loaded other apk's and hit the memory alarm: Phone low on space

Android Hacker report on storage:
NAND avail: 223MB, total: 331MB
Data Partition: 42/49MB
System Partition: 89/141MB
Cache: 0/0
SDCard Avail: 645MB Total: 1040MB

working on it..
RAM Avail: 26MB Total 99MB

UPDATE:Feb-4-2012
Skype failed, connection ok, video and audio receipt no go

Kept hitting phone low on storage

Manually cleared old/unused from dalvik-cache
Moved or reinstalled possibles from /system/app to /data/app (still many in /system/app)

RootExplorer report:
186.66MB used, 42.95 free in /
70.97MB used, 388.25 free in /data/app

For the future, a 300MB /PD_Novel/apps2sd.img alternate to the 500MB file size would allow better balance when the /system/app and /data/dalvik-cache still grow with app installs and app updates.

Still a much better tool I now have in hand with all your work Terminander, Thank You.

I have 6 grandchidren and, would love to get the sound, pictures and, videos, live. I don't have a mic or cam on the tablet but, that is what cheap feature phones are for, right? Hopefully, I can text them in Skype from my end.
The first trial has connected, the ring comes thru but, the sound and video is hung up on my end with the slow processing. Sometimes that is just the onboard configuration that goes on internal to the Novel and, clears up on the next cycle. Still testing.
2GB BPDN here.

Hmm. I downloaded it and flashed it. Seemed to work. Only problem is, it also seems to have wiped out Market, and I don't happen to have a backup copy of that particular app. Is this an expected side-effect?

I guess I'll re-flash 2.1, reflash the nosoftkeys upgrade, backup all my apps, then reflash this upgrade and try to re-install.

Sorry guys I didn't stress this enough.

All downloaded apps are deleted, but not their records of installs. So basically Android still thinks they are there. Market is in the original flash, but then is quickly replaced by a downloaded one.

So even after the fact, goto Settings - Applications - Manage Applications. Filter on Downloaded Apps. Now uninstall all the apps that are there. That should clean up things.

I don't know if restoring with Titanium Backup would work, but it might.

@terminander

I expected the installed apps to go away and I had no problem re-installing them. I was just surprised that Market got wiped out as well. Your explanation of why makes sense.

Still, no harm done. I did the triple-reflash this morning and am up and running just fine. Market *didn't* disappear this time because I didn't update it until after the third flash. And now I have enough free space to find out for myself just how slow Angry Birds is! (Answer: really slow! :D )

Looks like you created a 500-meg image file and loop-mounted it at data/apps? Pretty clever idea, I must say.

@ DerekandroidBLOGz

Apps2sd file becomes part of your internal sdcard and isn't lost when you do a reflash. However there is a file that activates, that is lost in a reflash. So it is necessary to reflash the apps2sd patch.

So here is the flash order:

OP21 Market flash
SuperUser patch (if you want) installs to /system/app
Apps2sd patch. (before you log into market)
Install alternate softkey method
Flash Nosk patch

Unfortunately CarDock, Amazon, Facebook, News, Google Goggles and Passion Quick Office are in /data/app. These apps should be removed before or after the Apps2sd patch. Or with Adb you could pull them, run the patch and then put them back.

@ Taylor at OSU, thanks whats the OSU stand for?

The white novel does something similar, but uses an actual partition on the internal sd. Difference is their internal sd is a real micro sd. I'm not willing to rearrange the partitions on the black novels non removable flash.

Heh. Stands for "The Ohio State University". I work at Ohio State, although playing with the BPDN is strictly a personal project. tayloratosu is a standard userid I use when I sign up for a message board -- oracle.com, ibm.com, hp.com, etc. Easy to remember and not likely to have already been chosen.

Once again terminander you are the man!!!!!!!!!

Works like a charm.
Titanium Backup worked great. I would still "You should uninstall all downloaded apps first to clean up databases" otherwise you will have to click yes i want to replace this file and then done for everything you restore lol

Thanks again :)
