Looks like a fairly stable ICS is available. I installed it via the ROM Manager in CM7 and didn't wipe the data partition. It preserved all my apps and settings, however I did have some trouble with mail. Maybe I'll try to delete those accounts and set them back up later, but for now I'm restoring from backup. Glad to see that the ROM manager lets me switch back and forth so easily.

Performance wise, with the default settings response on adding or moving items seems a little slow. Also the power widget doesn't have the orientation lock in it. As for the GAPPS there is a link provided for a streamlined version in the link below. Hmmm, I didn't install the new GAPPS, that might be the issue. I'll try that and report back.

Meh, I finally got my install of CM7.1 working and looking exactly how I want it to. I don't wanna change until a few stable releases come around. I am looking forward to it, but I'm also just starting to really enjoy my NC as a consumption device rather than a work in progress.

+1 I'm not a developer nor do I aspire to be one. I just made the move to 7.2. (Must have my lunch time videos.) I can wait.

Just an update. The link I provided for the ICS ROM includes the GAPPS in it. I had to flash the ROM, formatting the data partition in the process to get everything working. I also installed the update to correct the boot animation. I'm very pleased with the result, the issues remaining are:
1) Screen doesn't always recognize a touch the first time. Once it does detect the touch however the programs load really fast, so I don't think it's a performance issue.
2) As mentioned in the thread, video is not working.
3) Due to the aspect ratio of the NC there's a lot of unused space on the home screen when in portrait mode.
4) Web browsing feels a little slow. I'm not certain what is causing that, could just be the hardware though.

At any rate, for me it's working really well. I think my NC has sound hardware issues, so video and audio playback aren't really an issue for me since I can't hear anyway. Not to mention I've never really used my tablets for those things. I mainly use them as readers and web browsers.

On screen responsiveness...

I have a friend that works at the local library main branch for our county. Since he's in IT he has to help patrons with connectivity issues and such for all their devices, so he gets a lot of hands on with many types of tablets. Well, according to him the Nook Color itself has an issue with screen responsiveness and not recognizing a touch command the first time. So, if it's a software issue, B&N hasn't fixed it either.
