My future DIL works at a local pawn shop and hooked me up with a Nook Color. Apparently it was working when it came into the store, but once the battery discharged they couldn't get it to work with the charger that was supplied with it(An old micro usb phone charger). I bought a nook charger and was able to charge it fully, but when I power it on it hangs on the "Nook Color" splash screen. Some things I've been able to do:

• Did the 8 restart count thing to force a reset
• Did a factory restore using the button combinations on start

What I've tried unsuccessfully:
• Use winimage to write a boot image to an SD card. (I can't get winimage to recognize my card reader.)
• Use adb. The device doesn't show up when I do a adb devices, even though it's powered on. I haven't used the cable from the charger to try this however, but I've used another cable. I get the tone that a device has been recognized, but it never appears in the list of installed devices, and the tone repeats. I plan to try the charger cable at some point, but I'm thinking my next step is to get the device to boot to the sd card.

At this point aside from the cable I'm looking for ideas on what to do, and if someone has seen this type of behavior already and knows what to do. Can B&N deactivate an NC remotely if somehow this thing turns out to have been stolen? I'm basically looking for ideas, anything to get my mind working in a new direction.

Update:

By using a spare laptop I was able to flash the SD card with CWM and from there reflash the Nook Color software, however it still hung on the splash screen. I copied a CM7 ROM to the sdcard and tried that one. Intially the ROM didn't work completely. CWM doesn't install it fully, but CM7 has a utility that allowed me to reflash the same ROM I was using. On the reboot most everything I needed was working. I still don't have the Market, Gmail, or any of the the programs included in GAPPS, but i think I can work through that. It'll be a slow process, but I am disappointed I couldn't get the OEM nook software working.

Sucess!

I had an issue with nothing wanting to authenticate, so I ended up redownloading the CWM utility, reflashing the ROM (This time with CM7 exclusively. I never could get the Nook to boot into the OEM OS. I must say that coming from a VM T301 user the NC is sweet. I did have to research how to get the market and apps working, but it's been worth it. This is a much better android tablet than the T301. The NC feels cheaper though. Also the battery life is BAD! 8 hours on a good day with everything but Bluetooth running. It's going to make me bring my charger with me when I go to work. Another thing I like, with Gingerbread running I can now sync up my work Exchange mail box and calendar. The T301 on Froyo just would not work with Exchange 2010. Been playing with custom lock screens and all the apps I had on the T301. I'm very pleased. Now I just have to get a 16GB micro SD for it and I'm all set.

Sorry no one was here to help you in the first place. It's so quiet that I only check in about once a week anymore. Stock firmware is a real bitch with the NC. I had similar issues a while back when I decided to devoid my warranty.

Also, for future reference (from trial and error), be sure all instances of explorer are closed when you're running winimage. For some reason if explorer is open to the folder, or ANYTHING, it decides it is in use and won't work.

I experienced what you are talking about on my work pc when I was troubleshooting Winimage. However my issue was that the drive itself wasn't showing up. I suspect winimage just has a problem with my multicard reader. At home I just installed an alternate application to write the image and all was well. The alternate app is also free, so double plus.

What's the alternate program? Anything is better than Winimage, although it is quite fast.

alright ... noob to the tablet scene. Have an novo 7 aurora on its way here (yeah! it shipped!).

But in the meantime ... I am about to inherit a nook color through a trade of some old Wii games. It was bought locally through Craigslist. The buyer was scammed with it. It locks up after the boot screen with an "unauthorized user" message (they told her it worked). She took it to the local B&N and they said someone put that "android stuff" on there. She asked if it was stolen and they told her it wasn't but that she wouldn't be able to connect unless the previous owner gave her a password. She contacted them and they stopped responding. It was useless to her. I am assuming that it was a failed root attempt.

From here ... should I be able to return it to B&N pre-hacked condition

<or>

Can it be rooted/hacked properly and still be able to connect to the B&N service to download ebooks from their service?

Someone point me in the right direction. I should be getting this tomorrow.

Thanks.

To update OUTSIDE the ROM Manager, you need the CWR appropriate for the size of your SD card. http://mrm3.net/nook...ry-bootable-sd/
Get the latest nightly or the stable 7.1 here. http://download.cyan.../?device=encore

Follow these steps:

To install the CWR .img file to your SDCard using WinImage please follow these steps:
1. Open WinImage
2. Insert your SDCard into the card reader
3. Select "Restore virtual hard disk image" from the "Disk" menu
4. Select your SDCard
5. Select the Image that you downloaded from the above link
---
1. Copy the CM7 zip file to your SD card
2. Insert SD into the NC
3. Turn on NC
---
It will now boot into the CWR, and you need to format both the system and data on it before your flash. THIS IS IMPERATIVE!
To perform the formats follow these steps:

1. select "mounts and storage"
2. select "format system"
3. Confirm format
4. select "format data"
5. Confirm format
6. Continue with steps below

Once you have formatted the system and the data under the "mounts and storage" section of CWM, press the power button and continue with:

1. Select "install zip from SD card"
2. Select "choose zip from SD card"
3. Select the CM7 file
4. Confirm install and wait for it to continue.
5. After install is complete, shut down NC and remove the SD card.
6. Turn NC back on to a fresh CM7 install.

This installs the eMMC. There's a whole other process to installing CM7 to SD, but it sounds like you're using a secondhand unit and probably don't need to worry about warranty (the only real reason to install to the SD in the first place). Hope this helps.

Thanks. That seems pretty straight forward. Will let you know how it goes or if I run into a snag.

Got it to connect to my wifi just booting it up, but wouldn't connect to B&N.

Up and running with the CM7 now. Is there a way to connect to the android market without a phone number? I know I can get connected to the amazon market and a few others.

It is in great shape, has a very nice leather case, adapter, and 8GB card. Very nice trade for me.

I did get one error ... on the format data step. I know some settings survived ... it connected to my encrypted wifi without me having to enter my settings again.

I'll be playing around with it for a while. My daughter will be very happy.

Much thanks for your help.

hmmm... after a couple of uses started getting an "android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." message with a force stop button. It has happened a few times now. Do I need to reload again before I go too far configuring and loading apps, ect. Or is this possibly a setting that can be changed in a config file?

Thanks.

What sort of MicroSD are you using? I've found the only ones that work for me are from SanDisk. The Class 4 8GB worked well, but the 16GB was very unstable. My current setup is just a 4GB Class 2 Sandisk. It works like a charm and the only time I get FC is when the software is overly buggy or my 4 year old presses too many times on the same thing in a row.

Might consider installing Go Launcher EX. I love that interface on my NC. As for accessing Market, I just logged into my Gmail account when prompted. Have you installed gapps, yet? The process is pretty much the same as installing CM7 itself. http://goo-inside.me...0828-signed.zip is the one I used.

I tried the load twice ... tried two different cards: 1) Kingston 8GB - Class 4 and 2) PNY 8GB - Class 4. Both times it gave me an error when I tried to format the /data mount. I even ran the wipe cache/data. It showed to format the both /cache and /data. It would format the /system mount ok. Both times it loaded the CM7 fine. Even after loading the image again it came up with the new background and connected to my secure wifi. So the settings are still in some folder and being recalled. It does the process.media error at boot up (even if I don't have an SD card inserted). When I try to download the amazon app as soon as I click the link, it will show "download started" but then the error message comes up. Force stop and the download goes away. I am concerned about the error when I try to format the /data mount. Could it be corrupt? and won't let data write to it?

As far as the android market goes, I sign in with my gmail and it says that I have no registered device (this is browsing to it with the NC with the CM7.1)

Haven't done the gapps ... is that just an update?

Appreciate any more input on this error. Should I try a different stable CM file? Not sure where to go from here. A "media error" sounds like a disc/storage problem. Is there another bootable utility that I could manage the mount/partitions better?

Thanks again. Just want this to work.

Alrighty then. Kept playing around with it. Installed the gapps and signed in, but all downloads would just set there with no progress. Attempted to add the Amazon apps, but is would get the media error as soon as the download started and would close the download. SO ... thinking that maybe some corrupt file could be the culprit. I went to the app manager and went down the list clearing the data for the apps and rebooted the unit.

Now the media error has not appeared since with my daughter playing with it most of the day (already had one recharge). All of the apps from the market and amazon app now work with the downloading and installing of apps. I have had a coupled of the free games lock up and quick responding, but kind of expect that with freebies. She loves the fruit ninja. The wind-up knight is quite fun as well.

To be honest, not sure what file was causing the error, but the data clear appears to have wiped it out. Wonder if that file was what prevented the formatting of the /data mount?

Anyways ... it appears to be working great at the moment. Wifey has a Nook Tablet that she wants me to mod as soon as the warranty is up.

BTW. I tried the nook app, but it would not allow me sign in with my wife's account - said it couldn't connect with their server. It did pop up the "registering device" - maybe it doesn't like to be hacked.

Again .... thanks for all the help. Hope that what I did can maybe help someone down the road if they get the same error message.
