I am trying to update my daughter's Pandigital Novel to the new Android firmware and I am stuck in a permanent flash loop. In other words, I can get out of it, restart and have the old firmware load but I cannot get the new firmware to flash. Everytime I try I end up in the same loop. I have tried several different versions of the firmware including some hacked ones, but nothing gets me past the loop. I have also tried to use the PC installer but cannot get past the second step.
Any help is very greatly appreciated!

It is running Eclair??? Whatever this is.
I cannot figure out what version the SDK is...I think this matters?
That seems to be it. Oh I was able to get Panda Home running on it and I can install some .apk's from the command prompt but not most of them. (I get an outdated SDK error).
What does it do when you try to flash? Does it show you the exclamation in a triangle? Go read the WIKI on flashing, the most common problems:
Unzipping the FW file
Having more than one zipped FW file on the internal and external sd in the root
Changing the FW file name
Not getting a complete download of the FW file
I am having almost an identical problem on the Pandigital Star 7" Tablet.
It is a Christmas present for my wife so we've only had it less than a week. Out of the box it was not operating 100% (it is brand new, not a refurb) - kept crashing applications and things like that so we figure "Updating the firmware might fix that". Now that we've tried updating the firmware it's stuck in some sort of loop. We've tried all of the "Hold this and that button down at once and it will work" - no go.
Now all we're seeing when we turn the reader on is the Pandigital splash screen with the moving green bar... black screen... back to green bar. When we do the Volume/Power button combo it will go to a screen that suggests it is installing a firmware upgrade, then after it unpacks/installs/whatever a few files... back to the loop again.
I am a newbie and ran into this problem too.....while it was looping I put a paper clip in the reset hole and it stopped the loop and went back to the original firmware.....
Push the reset right after the flash restarts the progress bar or you may brick the unit. If you are flashing from the SD card, press and release the card at the end of the flash loop, perhaps when you see crosshatches in the progress bar.
On the 7" Star there seems to be a small hole where you'd think a reset button would be. However I've felt around in there with a thin wire and there doesn't feel like anything is there that could be considered a "button". It just feels like nothing's there, but it looks like the small hole you see on the front of a DVD drive - and it's the only one on the model. I've tried the SD card release and that didn't work either.
I'm wondering whether or not the tablet is trying to flash from the internal memory, because the firmware is probably on there too. If that's the case I have no way of getting to the internal memory because I can't activate USB mass storage while it's stuck in the loop...
Sorry, I'm not really familiar with those newer models, no help from anyone over on that forum? Do you have access to a manual so you know if it has a reset? I think the SD card removal should have stopped the flash loop if you were flashing from there, don't you know where you were flashing from? This is one reason I don't like flashing from the internal, and also there is much more chance of leaving flash files there and having multiple flash files between the two cards.
I am a newbie and just bought the novel and having the same flash loop
used SH20_OPDN_2_10_GAPPS_PD_INX7E_ENG_6410POP file to flash the device using external sd card (2gb + formatted fat32+only file in sd card)
did the same steps as earlier in the above suggestions
- release sd card during hash bars
- release sd card when yellow bar appears
- release sd card at the end of progress
the device keeps booting using original firmware...
any more suggestions or did i miss a step?

tried to reinstall the stock firmware using sd card and internal card ...nothing worked
tried the different reset...nothing worked
Further reading the different post, i decided to go to the the following post http://www.slatedroid.com/wiki/index.php?title=BeginHackingPandigital
and finally managed to make this work after installing adb, the driverHack...now I am getting "application.android.keyboard is not responding message"
If someone could point me on how to fix that issue i will appreciate it...
After all that, i tried to reinstall stock firmware in order to use kewlguy hack but was not succesful in it...
any more suggestions will be appreciated
quick update
first thanks to mrsburnout for help. the novel is succesfully rooted.
after carefully reading the post on http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/24232-how-to-part-3-recovering-your-bricked-wpdn-because-ya-didnt-follow-part-2-correctly/ and download the following file http://www.mediafire.../?ck18ia4b82wzw...i used the method 1 to reflash the novel using the recovery.img+bootloader.img (int the above post) to bring it back to stock.
I then used SH20_OPDN_2_10_GAPPS_PD_INX7E_ENG_6410POP + OP_GAPPS_PD_INX7E_ENG_6410POP flased using the internal microSd card
and everything worked then...
Now i am trying to find why market place is giving me an error message
<...snip> Notes regarding Market: When you access the market, download a free app right away to successfully register your market account. This needs to happen before the Market update is automatically downloaded (less than 5 minutes). You can delete the app later if you desire. If you miss the window, you have two options - you can add a second Google Account through the Quick Sync Settings application (installed with both the Google Experience and Market-Only addons) or you can try changing the time back 24 hours and reconnecting to the market. Search through the forum for more tips - there are plenty of weird things that have worked for people in the past.
