I installed 2.2 from the android-x86-2.2-r2-asus_laptop.iso on an ASUS N10E. It works great on this notebook but I have one problem. Data doesn't save. If I install apps and change settings, they are gone on next reboot. I installed android-x86 onto the NTFS windows xp partition. Does that have anything to do with it? Could it have anything to do with the fact that I made /system writeable? I also
didnt create a fake sd card. Could that be it?

I bet it is not related to /system being writable or missing SD card, I have myself an own build android 4.0 iso, and I have no problem with it...
I believe it has to be the fs, some versions of linux miss r/w NTFS drivers, in fact, the only reliable NTFS driver that can write directly is ntfs-3g, I doubt android-x86 has this...
The solution would be to use another filesystem, I highly recommend you making a standalone ext3 or 4 partition and install android in it, or you can even install it to a portable USB device, you only have to install an additional bootloader like grub, there's zillions of tutorials on internet on how to pull this off, but I can help if you get stuck.
Good luck!
