So, we're going to pool some Xmas gift funds to get a family tablet. We have no need for an iPad2 at the $500+ price so that's out right there. We're looking around the $200 mark. I'd like an 8" or larger tab and capacitive is a must.

I see the Sams & Walmart have the Vizio 8" tab for $195.

I believe it runs Android 2.3 and I emailed Vizio to see if they have any upgrade plans and was told they have no plans at this time.

I also think I can get the Archos 101 10" (not the G9 version) for between $200 - $250 so that could also work.

That only runs 2.2 out of the box but seems to have better developer support than the Vizio.

I have no problem mod'ing up a tablet to add gApps or whatever else as long as someone has some instructions somewhere.

This would primarily be used as a family tablet. Kids will have some games on there, adults will have some other games and do some browsing. Will be used for watching movies from the SD card or storage. Just a good, general purpose tablet.

Just looking for recommendations between the two above or something completely different that I haven't thought of yet. This will be my first tablet so I'm sure there's some out there that I don't even know about yet.

Thanks!!

EDIT: I also have been checking out the Black Friday deals but haven't seen much there yet either:

Hi, I`ve just purchased an A1CS 8" Android 2.3.1 (Gingerbread) Capacitive Multi-touch Tablet (Herotab MID816R2) from Amazon for £163 and it`s brilliant. Arm Cortex A8 Samsung S5pv210 1.2ghz 512 Ram 4Gb Rom (+external MicroSD slot) OpenGL-ES 3D Graphics and Flash 10.3. It really is a joy to use and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a Tablet in this price range.

Try checking out KIZTEK's new E-Journeyman tablet PC. They are running a $289.99 holiday special now through Nov 20th. You get the 10" tablet pc, Leather case and Keyboard, Stylus, 8GB SD memory card, and free shipping all for that price. I have personally seen the tablet and all I can say is that is is amazing. Its extremely responsive, has awesome graphics processing, and handles 3D games extremely well. Great for many other things as well. I love the unit myself. You can check it out for yourself at http://www.kiztek.com/specials

I'm going to try for the Asus tablet from best Buy on Black Friday for $250. It's a smoking tablet for the sale price. If I can't get that, then yeah, the Vizio is probably my next choice. Sams and Walmart both have it around the $195 price so that would work.

At Best Buy, The Toshiba Thrive has comparable specs and will be going for ... 270? Somewhere around there. If you miss out on the Transformer, the Thrive is a good second option if you can snag one.

Oh! and Ainol isn't pronounced like it looks, LOL. Its more like "eye-noll"... Still funny though :)

I'm looking to get the Lenovo ideapad A1, only a 7 inch though. It has a capacitive touchscreen, android market built in GPS and a good resolution screen. Think they sell for $229 but having trouble finding one in the UK :(

I just saw that Office Depot dropped the price for remaining Gtablet (viewsonic) to $199.99 from the $245.00 I paid a month ago. If you can find one. They did offer me a raincheck, and could look up two avialable in Atlanta area.

I bought the display G-Tab at my local Office Depot last Thursday and was able to get an additional 10% off. Flashed Flashback to it and it is running GREAT.

As a side note, all the local stores here in SW Florida are down to their displays only and the item is listed as no longer available when you call 1-800-GO-DEPOT (800-463-3768).

You were able to snag a doorbuster ticket? Right on, that's a great value :).
