Planet Battery Problems

I recently picked up a Pandigital Planet and found that my device won't run off the battery at all.
It boots no problem when plugged in, and runs like a dream, but only when running off of AC. The battery information shows that its at 99% and charging. The indicator light is not lit when it's on and plugged in. The second I unplug it the Planet is off, no "shutting down" or any of that business just instant power loss.
When I plug it in without turning it on the indicator light will show red....and stays that way for as long as I have it plugged in with no change (even after 6+ hours of charging). Trying to turn it on with out AC plugged in is completely non-responsive.
I've pulled it apart and checked the voltage on the battery with a multimeter and it shows the correct voltage and doesn't appear to be damaged. I'm at a loss here is there some other problem going on or do I just have a dud? Any ideas/help/solutions would be supremely appreciated.
Currently running OpenPDP ROM v2.0 (problem also occurred in most up to date stock ROM as well).

I feel as if I am not getting the best battery life. If I look at the battery status graph, I'm seeing very fluctuating battery life. Just turned off syncing, and temporarily turned off background data (market needs that tho), but feel as if I fly through it when just web searching. Am using Juicedefender, and have it set to aggressive.

I downloaded "battery calibration" app from android market and I think it works great. Before using the app you gotta charge to 100% then, calibrate, then unplug and drain your battery all the way to 0, then charge to full.

So, perhaps the "battery calibration" idea would solve the issue whereas I could have 40% battery, then notice it jump up to 48%? If I click on the graph, there are A LOT of spikes up and down in battery life. Seems weird.

Tell us what percent is it when you have it plugged in. Go to your home page; click on the little gear/widget at the bottom; go to the bottom and click on - ABOUT DEVICE and click on status - the battery level is there.

I don't think these batteries need that - that seems like that is what you do with Nicads. BUT I might be wrong. Is this question for you because you are having short battery time?
