Since seems that there is not fw for Window N12 out there yet, found a way to extract the already installed rom.

It's pretty much the stock rom, just rooted, removed chinese apps, English default, density changed to 140dpi, heapsize of 64, app storage space of 1GB and enabled gpu hw acceleration for UI.

I forgot to include the drivers in the above file :pardon: so you will need to download this http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YTHUMGHE and use the drivers folder.

Here is the flashing guide

Attached File  WN12 Custom Firmware Upgrade Instructions.pdf (359.06K)
Number of downloads: 561

and remember, even if I've performed this and worked it may not work for you and I will not be held responsible if something goes terribly wrong :p

I think that window already released a new firmware version for your N10 based on rockchip sdk 2.1, that version will be more easily rootable, since the system partition comes in ext3 file system and you just need to add su and superuser.apk with the help of adb.

For the old firmwares (pre sdk2.x) you must to use Wendal's Rk29 image tools (http://www.slatedroi...imagetools-v21/) to extract the update.img file and unpack system.img, then add su and superuser.apk to system folder and repack the system.img

Using Wendal's tool is not the best solution for me as yuandao decided to deleted all firmware files from their website... And i haven't got any backup of the firmware archive... :D

I've already switched to the latest firmware based on sdk2.x
So, theorically, partition is using ext3 instead of cramfs? I'll try your solution right now.

Thank you for your help.

Well, that's odd...
When i open a shell using adb, i get the # prompt.
I always thought it means i have root access...
As /system is already mounted, i tryied to disconnect and put su using adb push command, but it says /system/bin is read-only.

I am kind a newbie, so i can't explain that.

What do you think?

C:\zero>adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *

Hi

I'd just like to say thanks for taking the time and trouble to root this device. I'm still waiting for my N12 but it is good to know that I can root it.

regards,
Richard

Hi, could you tell me how you extracted the already installed rom?
I have two N12 here and tested your custom rom in one of them.
It all went well with the process except for one thing on the final system, the WiFi isn't recognized.
In the Settings, "About MID - Status - Wi-Fi MAC address" reports "Unavailable" instead of a MAC and, as a consequence, "Wireless & networks - Wi-Fi" reports "Error" after any attempt to turn it on.
Anyway, since I have a duplicate N12 with the original firmware, I guess that if I can extract that and flash it on this one I can restore it to the original state, right? :)

No problem, it's always a risk ;)
But you will be held in great appreciation for sharing the process to extract an installed rom :)

Thank you in advance,
Rick

Hi

I flashed my N12 with this firmware after about 1 hour of receiving it and wish I hadn't.
The wifi just says error when trying to turn it on and the screen rotation was a bit weird so I had to disable that.
After about 10 minutes of use the screen starts twitching and makes the tablet near impossible to use. Just shutting the tablet down takes a good few minutes.

I've asked Window and their official partners for the original firmware but have been ignored.

I've been on some Chinese websites that mention a sdk 2.1 firmware but the download website is incredibly slow and the download breaks every time I try. I'm hoping that Rockchip will release Ice Cream Sandwich very soon so that I can get my Xmas present to work.

That's strange, this rom even worked with a wopad7 clon sold by pandawill, did you (mindakicho and handcoded) received your n12 in a box like the first one in this post http://www.slatedroi...post__p__258240 ?
I'm thinking that may be you received a clone

Anyway, I'm going to post the stock sdk2 firmware version for n12 in a new thread if you want to try it.

Hi there,

I bought my brand new N12 and problems start to happen but I read the pdf and I have a question.
Can I flash only the partition file?

no, the parameter file tells the loader where are the partitions, if the sectors in the new parameter file doesn't match with the already written sectors in your tablet, it will not boot.

Links are dead since megaupload was shut down by the FBI.

Can you upload de rom again please?

Did you do any new modification to the rom since this topic is from November 2011?

Thanks in advanced.
