To unlock the Xoom, an Android SDK app named fastboot is required. The Linux version of the Android SDK is missing this app, which meant I had to use a windows machine to unlock my Xoom.

I searched the internet for a Linux fastboot version, and found several. But they did not work. At last I found one that worked, and would like to post it here to share it with other Linux users. I had to zip it because the forums won't let me attach a binary file.

I placed it in the same folder as adb: /android-sdk-linux_x86/platform-tools/ . I also had to run it with root permissions, in Ubuntu sudo worked for me. But I did have to then give the full path when issuing the fastboot command:
sudo /home/<user>/android-sdk-linux_x86/platform-tools/fastboot devices

This command will tell you if it 'sees' your Xoom. Replace <user> with the user that is logged in.

I won't go into detail on how to use fastboot, as that is already covered in other threads.
