Another problem is that it does not seem possible to charge it via usb?

The Wopad i8 uses 9V plug adapter. That means not possible to charge through USB. The Wopad i7 uses 5V plug adapter. The i7 should be chargeable through USB. A tablet or phone must use 5V plug adapter to charge through USB.

On my i7 the screen seems to protrude out a little from the casing. If I push hard enough in one spot of the screen it causes a graphical distortion for a few seconds in that one area. Build quality for i7 is good but not great.

My i7 came with manual, plug adapater, USB cable & headphones. Some Chinese companies create clones of popular tablets. Try to find out if yours is the real i8 or a clone. To not get a manual may point to getting a clone because in manual they normally list the company that made the tablet.

Ah thanks, I didn't know that. So i guess the reviews where it said wopad i8 is able to charge from usb just assumes, since the i7 can it would be too. That is pretty lame. But at least i learned something new and know it for next time.

How do I find out if I got the real one or a clone?

Misinformation happens when people assume or just quote others without verifying themselves. Anyone can post anything these days and is not always checked. The i7 uses 3.7V battery and the i8 7.4V. Which is the reason for higher 9V charger on the i8. USB port provides 5V.

Can be very hard or impossible to tell if you have clone. Sometimes they can look exact since a copy of the original. Other times there maybe small differences. You have to carefully check pics for i8. If look the same then you can try i8 firmware upgrade. If tablet no longer works or having issues after firmware upgrade then you very likely have a clone. Also, try searching the Internet for Wopad i8 clones to see what you can dig up from others.

I played around with a Wopad i8 for about two weeks, using the latest firmwire from the Merimobiles web site installed with Roman's tools. The only modification to build.prop was to change the region to "US" and the language to "en". Market worked fine with the default identifiers.

After getting frustrated with it's quirks I'm swapping it out for a Meying M11 16GB.

As others have noted, there are serious problems with the Wi-Fi in this device. I tried updating it with drivers and firmware from the Wopad i7 and Meying M11 to see if they improved performance but they either didn't help or didn't work. The signal strength reads about 20 dB lower on the i8 than on other tablets using Wi-Fi Analyzer, indicating it might be a hardware issue. Even with a strong signal (hotspot within 2 meters) the signal would drop out and reconnect. It was completely unusable until I followed a suggestion from Merimobiles to lock the access point to 802.11b only (no "g" or "n").

After disconnecting the charger with a full charge, the i8 sometimes came up with a "Connect charger" message. When this appeared the touchscreen would not work so I couldn't enter the pattern to unlock it. Holding the power button until it went to sleep would allow a normal shutdown when it came out of sleep. After that it would allow me to unlock it, but often two or three tries were necessary. Once working, I had no problems with unlocking it until it went back on the charger.

I like the feel of this unit with the aluminum back. The screen is beautiful. Too bad it has so many bugs.

I have nothing good to say about this tablet.

it's slow.
wifi is working horrible (even when it works, it's extremly slow, compared to all of my other devices).
the screen quality is bad (not clear)
the screen flikers a little bit
it's very buggy

Some of the issues can probably be solved by a better firmware, (if it's being updated often)

I can not recommend getting this tablet.

Great review,

Does this device support Arabic language? if not, can you confirm if these conditions apply (so we can install Arabic language):

  • Your device needs to be rooted.
  • Your Android version is 2.1 or newer
  • Your ROM needs to be deodexed. To find out if your installed ROM is deodexed, navigate to /system/framework on your phone. If you see a file called framework.odex then this patch will NOT work for you.
  • Your rom is not based on MIUI.

Thank a lot....

Some quotes I have read here regarding the screen.
"The first thing i noticed was that while it is charging there is some weird flickering on the screen if i press on the corners..."
"It's bit heavier than you would think which might be due to the metal back and glass covered screen".
.."the plastic clear touchpad is soft and will show slight fogging if pressed slightly harder than usual"

SO ..is the screen glass or flexible plastic? Posted Image

If plastic I imagine a screen protector would be advisable ..or would that decrease responsiveness?

I keep looking for the perfect tab at a low price, and it looks that just about all have issues and quirks.

Also figured out that I need to pick a supported model such as the i8 or maybe the M11, and work with the updates and help provided here on SLD.

Just thinking out loud ..Thanks for a good review. Posted Image

I've had this tablet for a few weeks now and would like to add my own impressions for those who think about buying it.

Let's start with the pros because it's the shorter list:

- screen is nice enough, resolution and the 4:3 ratio work well for ebooks
- build is solid, aluminum back
- flash works in browser, but only the built-in version, not the one from market

Now, the con list:

- aluminum back is slippery, looks nice but impractical
- device is heavy, as others have noted - perhaps because of metal back?
- only three real buttons (on/off, home, menu) and on the side/top makes the device cumbersome to use. Would much prefer front buttons and real volume buttons because the soft buttons in the status bar are not always accessible.
- charging works only with the power adapter (not USB) which has an incredibly short cable and thin, flimsy plug. Don't expect it to last.
- device charges only when turned on but doesn't always recognize the power. Sometimes need multiple unplug/replug to start charging.
- battery doesn't last long, even when the device is sleeping, even with wifi turned off
- weak wifi
- OpenGL has issues with some 3D applications. Google Earth is practically unusable, some games have issues with artifacts. It's basically hit-and-miss.
- position sensors are very jittery
- no GPS
- Skype doesn't support the built-in cameras
- I've had spontaneous shutdowns, probably related to battery/power/charging issues

Overall, I wouldn't buy it again. I believe for the money spent there are now better choices out there. Next one will be a brand tablet.

Hello! My charger broke for my Wopad i8. Would be very nice if someone posted a link to a place where i could buy a cheap charger. Have tried to charge it via the mini usb, and that doesnt work. Will need a 9V charger that suits the thin pinhole it seems...

Thanks!

Anyone know the dimensions of the Wopad i8 charger? Is the plug 2,5 mm?
