HTC EVO 4G 2.3 Gingerbread root tutorial:

(Step 1) Power down your phone and take the battery out. Printed on the phone under the battery is a serial number. It is on the bottom line and usually starts with the letters: HT then a series of numbers and letters. Write this code down for you will need it later.

(Step 2) Download superuser from this link: http://www.mediafire...q3ujsx1m4uq1662.

(Step 3) Download the HTC drivers from this link: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...13139469417033


(Step 4) Plug your phone to your computer and put the phone in disk drive mode. Now put the superuser .zip on the sdcard and change the mode to charge only.

(Step 5) Put the phone in usb debugging mode. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>development>usb debugging.
Also, enable fastboot. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>fastboot.

(Step 6) Got to: http://revolutionary.io/ Go down to the downloads section and select either windows or linux. (depending on your machine) Allow the file to download and proceed to the beta key generation.

(Step 7) Select your operating system (windows or linux) and your device and hboot version.
If you are unsure of your hboot version you can check by powering down your phone and holding volume down and the power button (make sure fastboot is turned off before doing this. just make sure to enable it again once you have checked and have the phone powered back up.)
Now enter your serial key (the code you got from under the battery.) select generate key and it will give you a beta key.
Make sure to keep the window open.

(Step Extract the revolutionary.zip and run revolutionary. It should recognize your device and then ask for the beta key. Enter the beta key it gave you, remember it is case sensitive.

(Step 9) Revolutionary will now work its magic. Let it do its thing and DO NOT interrupt it. It may seem like it is frozen but it sometimes just takes a few minutes.

(Step10) After it gets done with all of its operations, revolutionary will ask if you want it to connect to the internet and download the recovery. type the letter "y" and hit enter. It will do it and then reboot.

(Step11) Now you need to flash the superuser .zip. Disable fastboot and and usb debugging and power down the device. Hold volume down and power at the same time until you get the hboot menu. It may check for an image and shouldn't find one. Just let it do its thing. Volume down and select recovery. It will reboot into recover. Now just volume down to install .zip then select choose .zip from sdcard and choose the su 2.3.6.3 efgh signed.zip and select yes. It will flash it. When it is done just reboot.

Congratulations. You are now rooted with superuser and s-off and have full root access.

When I got to the part to download the recovery, it failed....what now? holding the volume and power buttons at the same time doesn't do anything...It looks like the S-off part worked though. Any suggestions?

FYI - did not work for me.

Here's the scenario:

I ran it twice on Server 2008 R2/Windows 7 -

Ran as Administrator -
Gets to the root and sits -
for almost an hour (during this time, the phone stays on the home screen. its is fully functional.) -

Does it need to be put into another mode, perhaps preboot? -


I have fast boot on as the tutorial says to turn it back on.

I have USB Debugging enabled.

I have the correct drivers (tried the download in the post above as well as the latest from HTC and Sprint). I have posted more details below.

Perhaps this is it:

I found this post at another site and one BIG difference I noticed is that they used a different driver.

As many of you know drivers communicate the operating system with the hardware. When I ran the application, nothing occurred on my hardware, even after 30 minutes. If I have the right drivers, then SOMETHING should MOST LIKELY happen on the phone. Maybe an error or something . . . I'm not sure. Anyhow I'm trying this post below:




I am by no means a pro at this but this is what I did:

1. remove HTC Sync from your computer
2. Install HTC Fastboot Drivers (http://downloads.unr...er3.0.0.007.exe)
3. Download Superuser (http://goo-inside.me....fgh-signed.zip) and put on your SD card
4. Put your serial number (S/N located under battery or on box) where indicated
5. Download the revolutionary-0.4pre3.zip when asked
6. Write down your beta key
7. Extract revolutionary-0.4pre3.zip somewhere you can find it
8. Make sure you are connected using the HTC Sync option on your phone
9. Check that USB debugging is enabled
10. Run revolutionary.exe from the revolutionary-0.4pre3 folder
11. Input the beta key where requested
12. Selected either Y/n to install recovery (I selected Y)
13. Select Recovery (Use the volume up/down keys to move and power to select)
14. Select install from .zip
15. Scroll down to su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and hit the power button
16. Reboot

Congratulations you now are rooted and have superuser privileges. Now go find a ROM you like from one of the many talented Chef's out there (Be sure the ROM is for the Evo as ROM's for other devices will not work). Put the ROM on your SD card and boot to hboot (Power on + volume down) and select Recover, select install from .zip, select the ROM and hit the power button.

Be careful as you can do permanent harm to your phone with root privileges. If you need to take your phone to Sprint for repair make sure you flash the stock ROM located at Sprint HTC Evo 4G Shipped ROMs .

I hope that helps and if you are a pro and I missed something let me know.

GOT IT!

I had it in charge mode and it needed to be in HTC sync mode.

I then prompted me that it could not locate HTC sync on my computer (it said uninstall it in the tutorial), and rebooted.

Its now at the HBOOT 2.16 screen.

Its been sitting for about 10 minutes doing nothing. The keys are locked up and I cannot use the volume up or down. The application says "Waiting for Fastboot", but nothing has happened.

If things don't shake lose within another 30, I'll disconnect it, likely reboot and post back . . . . . . .

Ok, it said "failed! Go have lemons" or something like that. . . . .

Pulled battery and rebooted.

Setup USB Debug

Enabled FastBoot (Maybe it was off and I thought it was on) - I was wrong, it WAS on

Connected HTC Sync Mode.

Ran the application again.

The USB disconnected. SD Card Unmounted. Application reads "Sending in Caroline".

Waiting 20 mins. Started over >>

Inserted USB. Booted fresh. Went USB Charge Mode.

This time it booted to the HBoot. The application just sits on "waiting for fastboot . . .."

I press power to select BOOTLOADER from the below options, because up and down do not work:

BOOTLOADER
REBOOT
REBOOT BOOTDOWNLOADER
POWER DOWN

Application still says "waiting for fastboot . . . "

After about 5 minutes, my usb disconnects and the application says to connect for download of cloockworkmod.

Failed.

Changed out the SD card (8G) for a 1G because the 8G has acted funny (perhaps its bad).

I then rebooted and loaded the application.

It Immediately went to clockwork flashing.

Rebooted device into HBoot.

It said "Flashing recovery over fastboot . . ."

Phone stayed at HBoot screen.

Ok, so I tried this on another machine at work with proper drivers and finally got a notice of success.

I was left at the fastboot screen and the application closed (revolutionary). I booted back into the system and ran superuser and it failed applying root. What am I missing at this point? I thought that was all there was to the rooting of the device? BTW these steps so far have NOT affected my Cricket Service. . . .

I'm a nimrod. I forgot to click recovery and install su from the sdcard. I did that and wiped the battery stats (good to maintain good battery life) and rebooted.

Installed Root Uninstaller and VIOLA! Removing apps with super access!

I am now rooted and my Cricket flash still works. Thanks for the great post!!

For future reference if you have a question or a problem that you posted here and have yet to get a response, I would suggest going over to xda-developers... More activity over there for our phones... Congrats on getting ROOT. I have a Evo 4g on boost.
