Notice:

I have just tried to run this update on the black models I have and they will not take this update, however the white models take the update fine & it fixes known issues with them.
I'm going to test re-writing an SD card and see how this performs in the black models & I will also try and document the hardware differences between them.

I have the black version and what I did is flash the 2011-06-13-MID816R2-StockBackupImage.rar rom and then did the upgrade to the new 2011-06-22 rom and it worked.

Netoglz, what is your experience with this updated version? What version did you have before your update?

Also, is this version rooted?

Wow, I think the version which came with my tablet, 0531, was already very snappy; tempted to update to this version now :)

This is my third android tablet and definately not a noob.

My tablet has the below firmware:

Model number
Full Android on S5PV210

Android version
2.3.1

Kernal version
2.6.35.7-bena-a2p3+
Bena@Bena #320

Build number
full_s5pv210bena-eng 2.3.1 gingerbread eng.version=bena-20110416_105507

I watched the video and followed the instructions and can't get mine to enter that special mode. Booted, the home button works fine as does the power/return button. However I can get the table to enter FASTBOOT by holding down the Menu-Power buttons. Any ideas how to get this flashed any other way?

On a slightly different note...
It seems there are a couple different models of the mid816r2. My R2 has all the same connectors in the same places and the beveled front bezel. However my back cover is beveled similar to the front rather than rounded. Also like the mid816 mine has a screw on either side of the connectors holding the back cover down. Upon removing the back cover I discovered another difference. There must be a resistive version and a capacitive version of this tablet as mine is missing the smaller circuit board that makes the multitouch/capacitive functions possible. I have a MID816 as well and opened it up to see if there were any other significant differences. The logic boards are almost identical with the exception of the MID816 has "BENa-8305" silk screened next to the CPU and the MID816R2 says "BENa-8306". Out of curiosity I pulled the flash card from my MID816 and put it in the the MID816R2. The tablet powered on, flashed the message "Dirty flash" and powered off again. I turned it on several times to see what would happen and other than the same few top lines of text when the tablet initializes at power up, there was nothing else I could make it do. I then put the R2 flash card back in and the tablet booted normally. Other than the silk screening difference, I could see no other difference between the 816 and 816R2 logic board. It seems that the only physical difference is possibly a capacitive screen. Since the logic boards are so close to identical, I wonder why the MID816 flash didn't work.

I'm no noob to android tablets as this is my third tablet and I have hacked the other two (X6D and MID816) pretty thoroughly. It seems there are at least 3 versions of the R2. My back cover looks like my MID816 back cover. It doesn't have the volume control switch on the side which is typical of the R2's. Mine is definitely a resistive screen as I am missing the capacitive converter board that makes the main logic board work with capacitive LCD's. The bezel is flat with the LCD which is common amongst the R2's. Anyway, there is the resistive black version, white capacitive version and black capacitive version that I have run across. Who knows how many more!

Genuine 816R2 are Capacitive versions only.

There are 2 versions Black & White which only differ very slightly.

Have you opened your "genuine" tablet? Looking at the images posted on slatedroid, mine is identical internally and externally to the pictures excepting the capacitive controller board. The connectors are in the identical places and the bezel is identical. My first tablet was an X6D and there are 3 tablets that externally look identical and have very slight differences between them. It seems that with Chinese tablets that there are variations on the theme and the R2 is no exception. Mine even runs 2.3.1 and the firmware is what the so called genuine ones run. Go figure.

Well Contemptx was right. Officially my tablet is an Aishua A816. However I have tried several of the mid816r2 roms on it and they do work. The LCD acts funny because there are some obvious differences between a capacitive and resistive LCD, but everything else seems to run fine. My point is more a general FYI. If you have either the a816 or the 816r2 they are so close to being the same tablet that the only difference is the LCD. With some tweaking of whatever sets LCD parameters, the ROMS are interchangeable.

It worked without any problems to update my 816r2 and very good guide for a beginner like me. Thanks a lot for that but I can't really see any advantages to the old one.
Are there any plans to do a updated one on new kernel version and newer android? 2.3.1 seems a bit outdated.
