Thanks for the teardown vid. I love that you do it so we don't have to (if we don't want). Personally I have no reason to do it myself but it's fascinating to see the guts of our devices, and realize how little there actually is inside.

Happy to do it.
I know most people get curious about their device.

MT - Thanks for all your videos, really informative. I see you remove the internal microSD card. In this way, is it possible to replace this with a larger one? Say, 8 or 16GB?

Correct you could replace the internal MicroSD with a larger.

Just know that there have been issues in the past with larger cards.
In generally the larger or faster a card, the slower the performance.

Usually sticking with a Class 4 or 6 card will help to prevent performance/slowdown issues.

You will find directions for imaging the new card in the [Image] Stock section...
In order to get the full benefits of the 8GB, you will need to use a Boot Linux CD such as knoppix and run GParted on it while the card is connected by USB.
You can then extend the FAT32 partition of the card.

I replaced the stock 4gb card with a class 10 16gb card. I used roadkil's disk image app to back up the 4 gig card and restored the image to the 16gb card. I then used paragon partition manager or acronis disk director (any app that can expand a partition will work) to expand the fat32 partition. I now show 13.9gb available space. I see no performance loss at all. Class 10 cards are the fastest currently available so the tablet should respond faster than the stock class 4 card that came in the tablet. It performing speed tests with the stock 4gb card and the 16gb card and copying the same files while the card is plugged into a micro SD card reader. I notice around twice the transfer rate with the class 10 card over the class 4 card. As long as the internal card reader can keep up with the card, a faster card will improve performance. The CPU and RAM are considerably faster than the flash card so getting data into RAM as quick as possible is advantageous. Does my tablet run twice as fast as it did with the class 4 card because I now have a class 10 card? No. Things are never so simple or linear. just because you can get data to the CPU and RAM faster doesn't mean the CPU can process faster. It just means that the CPU has to wait less on the flash card. Essentially it does make the overall performance better, but not "knock me over with a feather I'm so blown away" better.

On a side note...
I also tried installing a new image to the original 4gb card and the restore failed. I was able to put anything on the 16gb card with no issues and applied several ROM images I had found and try them out. In attempting to put an image on either of the 4gb cards I have, I would get an error message "error writing disk sector 1640448" and then the image restore would fail. Both of these cards were completely functional. One was in my mid816 and working fine and the other was in my mid816r2. I tried restoring the original image to these cards and that too would fail with the same error. I have 3 microSD card readers and both 4gb cards fail identically with all three readers doing the same image restore. I am able to remove all the partitions from them and format them as one fat32 partition and read/write to the entire card with no issues. I even ran a couple of disk checking tools against them to find any errors and they reported nothing. Go figure. It looks possibly like I will have to buy a larger card for my mid816 to get it running again. Ah well I wanted to do that anyway. Anyone want to try this on your 4gig card and see if you get similar results? I think I may have an answer. I will make an image of the install on my 16gb card, but resize the fat32 partition to as small as I can make it first and try restoring that to the 4gb cards. If it restores I can then resize the fat32 partition to take up the empty space. My hope is that the image back up is not recording partition sizes correctly which is why it restores on the 16gb card since it has 4 times as much storage space.

It shouldn't matter what the image gets restored to. Any USB flash drive or SD card should work equally well. I tried to an 8gig usb drive and it failed and to a 32gig class 10 SD card and that failed too. I'm thinking a different app may be in order. I have been doing all of these attempts from my thinkpad w500. I have several other machines with card readers in them. I'll try them too. More to come later...

Has anyone tried a 32gb card in the 816r2 either internally or in the external card slot?

I can see in your specs that you have two 2600 batteries in your tablet
but notices when I changed the sd card to a bigger size that the batteries
installed in my tablet are 2400 would this make a big difference.
also got my tablet from merimobiles and on there web site says the batteries are dual 2600maH
also in the user manual that came with the tablet
Thanks
Derek

If your batteries are 2400 there is a very good chance you have the original MID816, not the MID816R2.

Is the screen capacitive multi-touch on your tablet... or only single touch?

Yep... that definitely appears to be the MID816R2... they must have just used a different battery pack in it.

You should still get good life out of the tablet.

Thanks
Derek

Merimobiles now changed the specs on there web site
to 2400x2 batteries installed instead of the 2600 batteries
but still good battery life with the 2 x 2400 batteries

Any hint where the grav sensor is? I've opened my case and been unable to determine where/whatit is....and since it's not working (at all) on my system I'm getting a sinking feeling its just plain missing.

Is it possible to locate the solder points for the volume control? I assume that although the tablet is missing the physical control, the points are still on the mainboard? I'd like to add a suitable volume control to correct one of this tablets biggest shortcomings. :good:

Edit:

Well looky what I found...

I haven't been able to test it yet as the tablet is in pieces but it looks to be a volume spring switch and its location matches that of the MID816 boards. Should save a ton of work.
