OK, so I had a terrible first impression of the M001 simply because whatever I tried to drag/drop or slide went wrong. I got random presses instead of drags or slides. It felt like the M001 had a life of its own, not bothering to do my bidding at all.
I fixed it very simply, by removing the front plastic. This reveals the touch-surface directly and the feeling is now very different. It is still a quite slow device, but it is very usable.
Yes, the outermost layer of plastic that has some silver framing on it. It is possible to remove it from the outside, it's only held to the screen/case with double-sticky tape. Peel gently.
It may have been applying presure to the touch screen and so causing you problems, also have you tried a new custom firmware yet as these will help a lot in peformance.
Yes, the overlay plastic film was definitely applying pressure where it wasn't supposed to, and I also had to press harder than what I feel is comfortable. Pressing directly on to the touch surface is much nicer, and very much like what I am used to from my professional and personal experiences.
I am running Ecotox 1.4, first thing I installed when I got the thing. I couldn't say if it is faster than the original FW, but it is certainly slower than the Desire android phone I have. No surprise there
