MID816 - Running Android 2.3 - Gingerbread - Stock Base Image
Dated: 04-01-2011

IT WORKS!!!!!

I am pleased to report that the Gingerbread 2.3.1 image provided by techtoys2go.com WORKS!!!

I have uploaded the compressed .RAR file to the MID816.com website provided by our great Adrenalynn.
The file size is 713mb.

Remember this will FORMAT and ERASE your SD card.
I HIGHLY suggest making a backup image before replacing the existing one.
I also suggest trying to make a backup of any settings, saves, and personal data that you want to keep.
Titanium backup is usually suggested.

I have not tried to root it just yet... I also haven't really messed around in it and installed program yet either...
I can simply say that it works using the standard imaging method.

I have made a couple fairly major changes.
- Installed Better Keyboard 7 as an option.
- Although the Stock Gingerbread Keyboard isn't bad and is the current default.
- Installed ADW.Launcher to change default home screen/access
- Enabled ROOT access
- Enabled Full Android Market
- Modified all of the General Settings to US/English basis.
- Changed LCD Density to 200 instead of 240
- Changed Firmware Description from bena to tass
- Set Wi-Fi Sleep Policy to NEVER

This image was created from the stock 4GB Class 2 MicroSD Card - 3.69gb.

**PLEASE NOTE**
Now that I am accessing the Android Marketplace, there are some apps that need updated. (all apps are updated on date of image creation)
There were also some apps that are installed, but the marketplace didn't pick them up as such.
- To "reconnect" the app for available updates... just redownload/install the program.

The Partitions are still stock: (prevents format after every firmware update)

I have determined that it is the partition size changes that cause a format with every firmware update.
So I have decided to leave them stock.
Instead I have installed all of the programs and some more since the last image.
I then went in to each one and had the system "move" the data to the internal SD card data side where possible.
This freed up enough space to all all the programs to be installed and still some room left over.
I think this will be a better solution in the long run.

Imaging
There are many ways to apply an image file to a MicroSD memory card.
Below was my process. (provided as reference if needed)

**NEW INSTRUCTIONS** (No UBCD/Reboot Needed) - (Thanks javaman1966 and MikWik)

THIS WILL FORMAT/WIPE YOUR CARD AND DATA

Download: LockDismount0300.zip - 23.24kb
Lock and Dismount

SUGGESTIONS:
Backup any data you wish to keep before you begin

INSTRUCTIONS:

Remove the Internal MicroSD Card

To CREATE/RESTORE a Custom Image and Adjust Partition Sizes
1) Unzip LockDismount.exe
2) Install DiskImage - (optional at this time to Create Knoppix Boot CD)
3) Run LockDismount.exe (leave open) - **REQUIRED**
- Select the Appropriate USB Mass Storage Device
a) Check Force Dismount
Lock It!
4) Run Roadkil's DiskImage 1.6
- Select the Appropriate Physical Disk
a) Create a backup (store image) image of your existing MicroSD card
- OPTIONAL
i) Write the custom image (write image) to the MicroSD card
5) Run LockDismount.exe
a) Unlock
6) Bootup Knoppix "Live" CD (OPTIONAL)
a) Open GParted under Control Settings
adjust the 4 system partitions as you see fit
1) System (OS)
2) Apps (Internal app storage)
3) Cache (Temporary files)
4) Data (Personal/Public storage/access space)

Reinstall the Internal MicroSD Card
Boot your device.


**OLD INSTRUCTIONS**
The basics are:

1) Boot using Ultimate Boot CD for Windows
2) Remove MicroSD Card from the Tablet
3) Connect the MicroSD Card to the PC with a USB Adapter
4) Run Roadkills DiskImage v1.6
5) Create a backup (stored) image of the entire existing physical disk (for your safety net)
6) Write my image file to the included or replacement MicroSD card.
7) Reinstall the MicroSD in the tablet.
BOOT as normal

If you are "writing" the image to a larger MicroSD card, you can use Knoppix (Bootable) and GParted to adjust/increase the 4 seperate partition sizes.
- make sure you do not "mount" the drive as this locks the partitions and you simply need to unmount before you can modify it.

UBCD is booted on your desktop/laptop/home pc, not the tablet.

I can also share a created ISO... so you don't have to download the program and make one yourself.

Just take that file and burn it with any imaging software to make your bootable disc.

1) Create a "standard" bootable CD using the software
2) Boot your system from the CD Drive w/ the disc in place
3) Browse to the Disk and Imaging Utilities in the Start-->Programs
4) Open the imaging software

You can then backup your existing "physical disk" and then write my replacement one.

Knoppix is a CD/DVD Bootable Linux operating system.
You can use GParted to modify the "linux" partitions on the MicroSD Card.

Thanks TechToys for the work and Tass for the notification. I just finished doing a clean install of Gingerbread 2.3.1 on my MID816 and it's up and running however I can't seem to connect to my WiFi network =(. It's able to detect other neighborhood networks, but not mine. The only thing I can think of is that my WiFi is setup with an Apple Airport base station; could that be the reason?

Tass, can't wait to see your custom image of this ROM =).

And just for clarity, could someone tell me what the major differences between 2.3 Gingerbread and 2.2 Froyo? Aside from the obvious (2.3 Gingerbread is newer than 2.2 Froyo) is there really that big of a difference between the two? Last year when I was looking at tablets it was all about 2.2 Froyo over 2.1 Eclair mainly because Froyo supported Adobe Flash. Since happily purchasing an MID816 I haven't really kept up with Andriod OS news and a quick summary would be greatly appreciated if one has the time.

3.0 Honeycomb on an MID816 would be sweet, but from what little info I've read on the subject it's a completely different OS platform that's too hard to program for right now. Too many unknown variables but hopefully one day...=).

In regards to the wireless question... try turning off and then turning on the wireless on the tablet. Otherwise you may need to check your security setting and try simple WPA.

As to the difference for 2.3... from what i have ready... it is primarily more geared/optimized for gaming. Better framerates etc...

Before I can really do the custom image I need to get the tablet recognized by my PC so I can use ADB.

Also I am primarily continuing the 2.3 conversation at this time on the Gingerbread thread.

Going to be a bit more of a delay on that...
You can track the progress on the Gingerbread 2.3.1 thread under firmware development

Trying to get ROOT access to work.. then I need to redo the image because right now it has my Google account and I haven't found a way to remove it.

I installed the gingerbread .img here and it works, but you can't use google services with it. When you try to sign in the first time, it says:

"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your SIM card may not be provisioned
for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care."

I tried this on two wireless networks I could otherwise browse the web on, etc.

It's sort of useless without google services:(

Tass, you says it is rooted, which it seems to be, sort of, as I can adb shell and su, but I cannot push anything to it, even when i remount it as r/w.

No I said my next task is finding a way to ROOT it... currently the three methods I have tried all failed.

As I have said in a couple other posts... this fingerprint is very "Chinese Tablet" in the fact that it is a very limited market.
That is one reason it is important for us to get ROOT access, so we can change the value and get more apps.

Ive been testing ths tablet a LOT with android 2.3 (your version)

and unfurtunely i found a problem, and is that is not working with an HDMI connected to the TV,

With 2.2 worked fine but not with 2.3.
When i connected and i press an option on tablet, "The tablet freezes"

Version 2.3 is really good, but HDMI is very important and that is a mayor flaw.

Any way to fix it my friends???

First off:
It is not "my" image.
It was an image ripped off of a tablet by techtoys2go.com from an existing recently sold version
It is probably a very early and initial release... hopefully there will be specific firmware updates... but at this time it is unknown.
- I am still trying to make my own "custom" image from it... currently I have gotten as far as settings and apps...
- before I release mine I want ROOT access so I can make a DPI change and FULL Market change.

Now on to the rest of it: (I have just tested and verified)
1) Video plays great with Rockplayer
2) HDMI out works great also
- I didn't have any freezing issues
- Everything that was on the screen showed on the TV just fine
- Only issue I could say is that the audio out is dependent on the device volume... which wouldn't be an issue except it also comes out of the speaker at the same time.

So for the HDMI... I can only suggest going in to the Display settings...
Unlike Froyo 2.2... there are a LOT of variations and options for the HDMI
IE: Under Settings --> Display settings - (NOTE: I am in the US with a 720P 60Hz Samsung LCD TV)
TV Mode - (All three worked for me)
- HDMI(YCbCr) - (What I am using)
