Prior to April 2010, tablet PC's were a laptop with a touchscreen where one uses a stylus or a finger to make the input. The Apple iPad changed this. As tablets are being released by almost every major, and not so major, consumer electronic and computer manufacturer, consumers will have a wide range of tablets to choose from. For some time, there have been Android tablets built and sold in China. Although the price is great, the quality is poor. With many more choices coming out in 2011, how does a consumer pick the right tablet? Well, the answer is not so simple as it really depends on what a person wants. We will provide some guidelines below with what one should expect as a minimum and what one should ideally aim for. Normally, you do get what you pay for but keep these tips in mind when deciding which tablet to buy.

that's true. It is really hard for people to pick right one from masses of tablets. i often saw some members in the android-related forums ask help after their tablets were crashed down or cannot something, like wifi lost the connected, the screen got freezed up etc. that's all terrible.
For me, good wifi connection is important. no wifi, that's not a tablet at all. The second thing matters much to me is downloading apps from market normally. Never want to be bothered by kicked out by market or failed to download. If that, lots of fun lost from android tablets.

@androidlove We do test the WiFi on all the tablets to ensure it works. The range is specifically tested under 3 different distances; some with obstacles (such as second floor or from one side of the house to the other with multiple walls in between). The higher quality tablets should not have any problems. We have not encountered any WiFi issues on the 3 various tablets that we have reviewed.

It gets difficult to test installing apps from Google Market if the tablet does not normally include it. If a hack exists to install the Google Market (assuming the tablet does not include Google Market), we will test it.

Depends what you are looking for. For brand new, I would buy from a legitimate website. Nothing against eBay as I have bought tons of items but never a tablet.

I thing that I forgot to mention in my article is to buy an extended warranty (like Squaretrade). Tablets are too new to tell how reliable they will be two or three years from now. Buying an extended warranty will protect especially since these devices should be expensive to repair.

Great question but not sure if I have an answer. You definitely don't want to spend a lot. Depends what they will use it for. I like the Archos 70. It should work for them.
