Alternative App Marketplaces for the Velocity Cruz Tablet

The Velocity Cruz tablet does not have a pre-installed version of the Android Market.  There is currently a workaround to access the Market using GJSmith3rd's AVD emulator method which is stickied here.  The following markets are alternatives that allow you to download Android apps for installation on your device.  They have been collected from recommendations by contributors to this thread. If you would like to add a market or marketplace application to this thread, please post it in the thread and it will be added here.  Thanks!

See the video below if you need instructions on how to install an apk application file on your Android device.

How To Install an apk File on Android Devices

Note: You do not need to download ASTRO for the Cruz Tablet, it comes pre-installed.  You can find it in your application tray.

Original post:

I came across this Android application marketplace alternative which has a nice, clean UI, a decent number of applications, a SD card apk installer, and appears to check for updates in your apps to recommend new downloads/installs.  Like other alternatives to the Android market, it is much smaller and will likely not have everything that you are looking for, but I managed to find a number of great apps so I figured I would post it up to give you another option that you can explore.

You can view the web-based market here where you can directly download apk's (unlike AppBrain and others that link you to the Android Market):

And you can download the Slide.ME Market apk for your device here:

Hey, you have to do your own work <grin> install the alternate markets but if you don't have access to the Android Market from another device you should build yourself an Android SDK AVD Emulator with the Andriod Market.  Just installed NPR News, CNN and USA Today from mines.  I'm in app heaven!

Just click the link below to get started.

Yeah, there have been lots of complaints but I have to say it has worked well for my purposes.  I read all of my work pdf files on it, have it loaded with music, read the news with Pulse.  Will have some basis for comparison when my ZT180 arrives in next couple of days.

I woundn't recommend it to some who needs a user friendly device but for Techs it's not bad.

Trust me lol, as I have stated earlier, I have been doing my legwork to hunt these and other good apps, just wanted to know if anyone had used these methods and may have came across or downloaded these themselve so that I know I wouldn't be wasting my time trying to figure out if I could get these or not, and I have looked at the emulator method, looks a little confusing but I plan on trying it once I have ample time to do so without messing it up( I have three jobs lol)

Updated the first post with other app market recommendations, switched title to "Alternative App Marketplaces for Cruz Tablet", and added a YouTube video on how to install an apk file on Android phones.  Feel free to add other markets if you've come across any that are useful.

Hey,

I have tried nook multiple times but no dice. I hear that Angry Bird's developers are making a low res version of their game that will be compatible with more devices.

Freeware Lovers has a web based market that you can use to download apps directly to the Cruz Tablet.  Just click on the APK you want and when new page loads look for "If the download didn't start automatically please click here."

There's also the APKShare App but I can't remember where I got it.  Here a link from a web search...

Thanks for the above links,I tried some of the ones in the beginning post but they pretty much had the same ones that are on the Cruz market and the andapp store, but I'm going to try these when I get home. Side question, has anyone tried to tether their tablet to their cell phone to pick up their wifi, saw a post on here but the poster only stated that he got it to work not neccessarily how he did it, any ideas?

I think it was joshua who worked on that.  this is the thread where they were discussing it:

Yeah that's the same one but he didn't really go into detail of what he actually did, and I don't think he's on here anymore since he stated he returned the tablet
