The Archos is an amazing tablet. In my opinion, short of the Galaxy Tab, it's the closest thing to an iPad competitor. Would be nice if Honeycomb came to it. However, there are certain things about it that bother me.

1. Memory leaks. After a certain amount of usage...two-three hours, it slows to a crawl to where it's barely usable, requiring a reboot.

2. Random lockups. I am really getting tired of the Archos, at times, randomly locking up. I'm running Froyo .71 version with overdrive activated. Lowering it to optimal or powersave doesn't really make a difference.

What is good about the Archos is:

1. Android.
2. It's speed.
3. Customization.
4. How it CAN run flash hacks on certain sites until Archos certifies flash.

Anything I can possibly do about the random lockups without nuking the archos?

the problem can be that the cash file is filling up after a certain amount of time ..which makes it slow and laggy ...(common sense)

i could be wrong though

Mine has random reboots as well, though not too bad, but them I am RMAing mine tomorrow for unglued screen.

For the lags one suggestion is to install auto memory manager and set it to agressisve.  This will keep let background apps running and therefore more free memory for foreground app.

I have the same issues on my 70.  My wifi acts a little flaky at times when it wakes from sleep mode.  I noticed an improvement with some of the issues with the upgrade from 54 to 71 firmware and I am sure they will get better with future software releases.  Remember, Archos is not Apple so they do not have the same ability to test the firmware before release but they can also act more quickly and make releases more often.

You left out the ability to play just about any video file in the universe as an advantage of the device.  I worry about loading a custom ROM on it if the time comes because I don't want to lose the video player.  The 70 also makes a perfect eReader.

I have to agree with you on the taking a chance on any custom rom for the Archos 7o. I am still at the 2.1 non froyo OS and really haven't seen any reason to "upgrade" to 2.2 froyo. The video player is excellent and we play new motion pictures with subtitles(we are old) all the time on it (just watched Grown Ups on it!) and also play all the latest games flawlessly! On top of that our WifFi is going strong on the N protocol and as you say it is a terrific ereader + Music player. The market is not broken and we continue to purchase and use all sorts of new apps.
So I go one step further and say besides not using a custom rom , don't update to froyo until a really valid reason exists to do so.

Well the thing is, Redhaven, why woud I mention that about the Archos? Archos is LEGENDARY for their multimedia performance, short of Creative. :) However, there IS another thing I didn't mention. The ability to stack thumb drives on the Archos for whatever reason to add infinate space to the machine.

Archos 10.1 16GB + 32 GB micro sd + 64GB Flash drive.
Think of the possibilities. Best part about that option? The thumb drive does not eat battery! (Well at least if it's not on overdrive.)

Installing the Android Market and other Google apps on your Archos Gen 8 device (70 or 101) is easy. Just search for th gAppsInstaller app, download it, put it on your tablet and run it. That's all.
T-Mobile G1 (US Import), Cyanogen Mod 5.0.7, Android 2.1
HTC Desire, unmodded, Android 2.2
Eken M001, Eken Relax v1.9.7, Android 1.6

Sorry if I have revived an old post but I just had to comment as my 101 became laggy and almost unusable after a couple of hours use and thought it was just me, however, I have installed the cyanogenmod 7 ROM and also bodhi-linux dual boot via SDE and it now works like a charm.
