Okay, well, if this is the developer thread, I'll post this here (even though I can't really call myself a developer).
I've been puttering around with ADB today, trying to load some files into the /system directory. My goal is to get the ability to have live wallpapers. (Maybe that's not even a realistic goal, given the hardware, but I figured I'd try.)
Here's the problem: I can't get write access to the /system folder.
Typing
Code:
adb remount rw
succeeds, but the /system directory still looks like this:
Code:
/dev/block/mtdblock4 /system cramfs ro 0 0
What I'm trying to do is get to the point where I can do this:
It is a cramfs filesystem - read only. to modify it, you have to dump it to a system.img, extract it, add files, create a new image, pack it back into a new update.img and flash it.
Playing around with power management - looks what gets written to dmesg. Blah!

One thing that's frustrating to me is that there's a microphone on the device, but the only thing it's good for is the voice recorder. Every time I try to install a voice search APK (and I've found one with the keyboard, and one without) it fails. The APK either won't install, or it can't find the microphone. I'll try to do some research to see if there are files missing other than the APKs.
about making system r/w. I know about two methods that are used on several ROMs. The one that lionhearts froyo rom uses.
Its starts a script at boot that converts the mtd partition from cramfs to ext3. The other one is using aufs.ko to mount /data/sysrw to /system after boot process is finished. its overlaying system to have r/w access.

I am currently trying with aufs. I am just having issues debugging this because it has to be blind - usb is only in host mode so no adb/kernel messages!
It doesn't like you using the date as a dir because of the hyphen. just put in xxx instead with no forward slash.
Oh, and is the update.img in that dir?
Well it would appear that I have run into a similar fate that beerhunter did in the other thread. I installed z4root, applied "temporary" root and now the thing just keeps cycling through an "com.google.acore" force close message. I can power off but everytime I turn it back on it starts the cycle over again.
Have you tried the recovery instructions from the first post in this thread?
Recovery Instructions:
1. Turn Power Off
2. Press and hold Power + Home Buttons and plug usb cable in
3. Run RKAndroidBatchUpgrade

I'm having exactly the same problem that dchamber and beerhunter are having. I'd like to recover to the original except all the links at the beginning of this thread aren't working. I'm getting an Error (509) This account's public links are generating too much traffic and have been temporarily disabled!
so, could you set up a mirror link to solve the traffic problem?
Sorry guys, account suspended while I was sleeping. Didn't expect to get THAT much traffic (Over 100GB downloaded so far)
Looking for a new home as we speak.
Success. Had an initial issue with installing the hardware drive on the PC, because I pointed to the RKTools folder rather than drilling down to the actual folder for my Vista OS. It then installed the first driver it came across I guess, then said that it failed. I removed the device (unknown device with yellow exclamation mark) and tried it again and it just automatically installed the incorrect driver again, so this time I manually used "update driver" and it let me point directly to the vista folder and it worked. I used the update.img you provided Shad, and it is working fine.
I did have one glitch that occured after it first booted and wanted me to go through the calibration. It froze after I touched the first target but it may have been because it was still connected by usb. I powered off, disconnected the usb cable and the calibration worked fine and it booted into home screen. Market loaded but I haven't tried downloading yet.
Beerhunter.....if you are having trouble with the usb, try connecting then remove the device in device manager then try it again. Maybe it will work for you too.
I'm surprised that vista did anything ...I'm scared to connect anything to it. For instance, the last Mp3 player I had that it turned into a digital camera and rendered it useless ever since! I was leery to connect this to windows7 but it's been relatively good until now. I guess that's because I use Linux and rarely connect anything to it... LOL!
Anyway, I tried removing the unknown device about 2 dozen times at least all it did was refresh the page.
Also, don't forget to clear the cache of any Google apps you have running on the device by going to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications. That was a stumbling block for me for a while.
Guys , i just wanted to say thank you for all of the feverish work you've been doing in the past 3 days concerning this tablet.
I walked into my local CVS and saw this and was like "WTF, a tablet for 100 bucks, oh, *ell yeah".. i have an HTC evo and i was always afraid to
root it and play with it because if i bricked it or it was down for an extended period of time, i wouldn't have a phone.
i installed the 5a release just a few minutes ago with the flash util and rebooted , and market works flawlessly.
as for the time zone lock , i had no issues manually changing it , and it remembered it across 2 reboots.
installed Pandora radio and tunein radio from market and both work perfectly.
this is a massive amount of work from a few very dedicated people in a short time.
on an unrelated note, i took this apart.( i had to, curiosity got the best of me....there's TONS of room in this case. you could theoretically add batteries or even hard-wire a dedicated thumb drive internally. on the note , me and a friend found out that portable hard drives will not work on the USB host unless theyre formatted with FAT32. We successfully got a ONE TERABYTE portable HDD to register as a usb device using drive overlay software and formatting it with FAT32.
THANK YOU AGAIN for all the hard work , and i am in love with this disposable POS now!
I noticed that when mine was up and running. Looks like I'll be re-formatting to fat32 unless a way to make it read NTFS is figured out!
